Your RASHOMON pick reminds me of the line in "The Simpsons" where Homer tells Marge that he hates movies with subtitles. "That's not true", she responds. "You liked RASHOMON. "That's not the way I remember it", says Homer.😀
🤣 Perfection. You've reminded me of my love of that show. It's been too long since I've seen it!
One of my all time favorite films is Mike Leigh’s Topsy-Turvey. It doesn’t get talked about much, maybe because it is about Gilbert and Sullivan, who are not for everyone, but I think it’s such a perfect, beautiful film with amazing performances, costumes, set design, music, and a blend of humor and sadness. It has a great Criterion release.
Most excellent pick Logan! I really enjoyed Topsy-Turvy when I saw it not too long ago. Such great everything, like you said. Cheers!
Hey Nathan - Love the selections. Flash sale should be tomorrow! 🤞 Hiroshima was a recent watch and what a fantastic movie that was. One pick I would submit would be The Cranes are Flying. Cheers
Thanks F V! I still need to see The Cranes are Flying, so thank you for recommendation. Hiroshima Mon Amour is something hopefully more people can check out now!
YES
Love seeing someone recommend Black Girl. Super powerful film about the aftermath of colonialism. Super rich film packed with layers of meaning despite being so short
Thank you, Art Irony! It's an immensely powerful film and packs so much, as you said. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Lots of recommendations. These are personal favorites
Anatomy of a murder
Some like it Hot
Bicycle Thieves
Before Trilogy
High and Low
Make Way for Tomorrow
The Red Shoes
The Lady Vanishes
The Killing
Foreign Correspondent
Detour
Taste of Cherry
All such great titles! Only one I've not seen from your list, haha! Cheers Sergey!
I'm still relatively new to the collection so I don't own all of the essential titles that I want yet.
But the more lesser known title that I can't wait to purchase from the sale is the recent release of "Boat People (1982)" directed by Ann Hui, spine #1113. Phenomenal film about a Japanese photojournalist who travels to Vietnam shortly after the Vietnam War had ended with the intent of documenting the status of the region at that period of time. Don't want to give any spoilers away, but just know that it is fantastic. It also makes for a great double feature when watched alongside the Korean film "A Taxi Driver (2017)" which stars Song Kang Ho as the lead role.
...
I also wanted to give you a quick heads up how Sundance Film Festival 2022's winner "Nanny (2022)" directed by Nikyatu Jusu is VERY similar to Black Girl. Like it's extremely similar, but also a great film as well. Tho this film introduces an element of horror as a way to visualize the way that the nanny in the film feels in various moments throughout the film. Definitely recommend checking that film out whenever it releases to the public later this year if you want essentially a modern-day remake of Black Girl.
Thanks so much Magnitude Rev! I still haven't seen Boat People myself. Also thanks for the pairing along with it! Appreciate you stopping by, cheers!
Hi Nathan; new to your channel 👍 Love ‘12 Angry Men’; amazing film. I’m still yet to pick up the Criterion for ‘Night Of The Hunter’. Great video; some excellent recommendations 😊🍿🎥
Thanks Sam! Much appreciated. Cheers 🎥😁
Buy Night of the Hunter!! You will not regret it. I'm hoping someday that a relative of Charles Laughton finds a long lost movie he directed and releases it. That would be heaven on earth for me. It's a shame that is the only movie he directed. A beautiful film!!
@@angeldavis3359 I defo will pick it up at some point; thanks for the recommendation 😊🍿🎥
So excited! The flash sale hasn’t started yet, has it?
I think it'll be tomorrow starting at 12 PM EST. But I'm still not entirely sure, haha!
Great selections there. A great mix of the popular and strong recommendations of underseen titles. I have the BFI release of Black Girl unwatched so I’ll need to rectify that soon, especially given it’s short run time.
Cheers for the shout out as well buddy. A great film to be associated with 👍
Thanks Chris! Hopefully you can find some time for that BFI release. I still need to see Jeanne Dielman, if you recall? Cheers my friend, and thanks for the reminder!
Rashomon is excellent, great pick
Thanks Suburb Scopion! Love that film.
My recommendations, I love all of these-
Orpheus
The Red Shoes
Mulholland Dr.
The Seventh Seal
La Piscine
Fists in the Pocket
Last Year at Marienbad
Paris, Texas
3 Women
Children of Paradise
Most excellent recommendations! I need to get a few of those titles myself, haha!
Rashomon is great and I would recommend getting the punch drunk love fabulous movie and the special features are great do highly reccomend.
Excellent recommendation! I really enjoy that one from PTA.
Hiroshima Mon Amour is so good and a film I like more and more upon rewatching!
Right? I've only seen it twice but it's one that leaves such a lasting impression.
I would recommend
Mulholland Drive
Blue Velvet
Miller’s Crossing
Trainspotting
Ghost World
Crumb
Cure
Memories of Murder
Hausu
Seven Samurai
Blood Simple
Lady Snowblood
Fantastic choices! Seconded 🤘
Some good picks. BTW, it's Charles "Lawton" not "Lof-ten"
The flash sale is the best time to pick up box sets; The Cinema of Ingmar Bergman, The Karel Zeman set, The Complete Jacques Tati, and the Dekalog would be top of my list.
Thanks for watching and for the heads up! And great recommendations! I love all of those sets!
Also Dick Johnson is Dead Is amazing.
And how!
It's the 24th of Feb. Usually get a mail from Criterion, but I didn't this time. Or are we jumping the gun a bit?
Yeah, I based it off the past two years and was a little off. It is still happening soon, just perhaps next week or after? 🤞
Dropping the dough in a second
Soon. Very soon...
@@blu-rayswithnathanjones I don't know what's taking so long :/
@@celestialsonicexperience 😥
Damn you. ♥️💸💸
😈😘
When is the flash sale??
I think it may be either next week or the week after. Based on the past two sales, I figured it would have been this last one 😅
@@blu-rayswithnathanjones gotcha! If you remember let me know when it happens because there a couple I want. Thank you 😇😇
I still haven't heard anything about a Criterion flash sale, did I somehow miss it or has it not happened yet or what? Or is it even going to happen?
It has yet to happen. I went off the two previous years, but it seems to be coming either next week or the week after. Hopefully soon!
Did I miss the sale?
I based my initial assumption on the past two sales, haha! The sale seems to be happening either next week or the week after, hopefully. Still pending!
