As addendum: 1) think of a curator's work as a very smart manager - not only do they have to manage the parts of the museums collection, but they are also required to know a lot about what they manage. They have to think about the objects being shown, which needed a touch up, if other museums would like to borrow these objects, how they're being presented (lighting from above? bellow? where to put the information text?), what are the informations and contexts surrounding the objects (a painting from Van Gogh is not the same as Munch - despite both men being born only 10 years apart, and needless to say is way different than those of Caravaggio or Rubens) and if they're doing an exhibition, they are also manage the exhibition. Sure there might be other departments that does help with other events, but the curators have to be informed too, just in case different groups directly requests the museum to visit the exhibition and get a guided tour. So yes, a curator is a very smart manager that knows a lot of things about a lot of objects and also how to manage these objects. 2) attendants (or where I used to work visitor service, but yes - monitoring staff would not be a bad translation) is basically 90% guards, 10% guides. Their most pressing job is to keep visitors from getting to near and accidentally or knowingly touch the artworks - unless the artworks wants to be touched. This is basically due to the most common conservation guidelines (which is another whole genre of job in a museum). One case that I personally experienced was with a kid that in my opinion was just trying to be an ass and tried to get as close as possible to a painting. Kid got warned by the attendants with a pretty stern tone - said kid did the same thing multiple times - and almost got kicked out from the exhibition room. But like Raden said, they're there basically to inform and enforce the house rules - about photography, distance towards an artwork, direct questions and complaints from visitors etc. From my experience there were no forced seminars that the attendants have to attend (after all their primary function is more security than educational), but I did remember a curator giving a small seminar directly in front of the work (yes, singular!) that was being shown.
