Translation notes: 2:10 Joushiki-maku is a tri-coloured curtain regularly used in kabuki and rakugo theatres. Its regular use is reflected in its name, which means "regularly-used curtain". 2:22 In rakugo, the Japanese one-man (or one-woman) storytelling act, the fan is one of the few props that performers can use to represent a variety of objects. 3:46 Raden's name comes from the Japanese technique inlaying mother-of-pearl onto craftwork. 5:31 Structural colouration is the production of colours in animals (and some plants) by structures so microscopically fine they interfere with visible light and appear iridescent, such as in peacock tail feathers, butterflies, and, yes, mother-of-pearls (raden). 6:19 Haori is an overcoat you wear on top of the kimono. Strictly speaking, Raden has a haori-style cape, not a haori. 6:24 The second kanji 烏 in Raden's surname 儒烏風亭 (Ju-u-fuu-tei) has different pronunciations depending on where it is used. It is read as the on'yomi "u" in the name, and "karasu" by itself in kun'yomi. The kanji 烏 means "crow". 6:27 Yatagarasu is a three-legged crow in Japanese mythology known for being a god of guidance. 14:01 Raden's fans have a joke where they keep making up new names for her, usually in the form of two or more kanjis, followed by the kanji "tei" (亭), then a three-hiragana given name . Here it's Joushikitei Majime (常識亭まじめ), where Joushiki means "common sense" and Majime means "serious". The same joke doesn't work as well in English, so I opted to make use of her JFT shorthand instead. 14:44 Yose is the place where rakugo is performed. As mentioned above, rakugo theatres use the joushiki-maku of kabuki too.
Thanks for the added info! Just wanted to point out that we've seen Yatagarasu in Hololive before - that's Sana's worm mascot, though it's in a different shape there.
She struck me immediately on some nerve that is reserved for a very special case. I guess it would be "genuine crush", though I don't place much value on it, it's the kind of person I actually couldn't approach in real life without getting nervous. And this is actually rare for me, IRL I usually get disillusioned and DON'T find people intimidating. The opposite of compulsively putting them on a pedestal. Selen, Kagura Mea and Subaru give off this air, so it probably is some level of things getting "too real", although I repeat, ACTUAL PEOPLE wouldn't. I just flip over to thinking people are pretending to be "serious", and not doing a very good job at it, seeing how it appears to come from HIDING their lack of confidence which in turn only boosts up my own. If anything, these rare vtubers are like Tyler Durden in a world full of the main character from Fight Club. Nothing so intimately threatening could be the real person.
I'm glad Kaoming-san has reconciled their vision of Raden with what she has become; I think Raden is one of the most fascinating streamers anywhere ever, and long-form clips like yours have been a huge part of my growing appreciation for her! Kudos.
when cultured vtuber meets cultured vtuber designer: out comes Raden it seems like her ideas really sparked a lot of inspiration in Kaoming sensei. hearing about the thought put into her design really makes me appreciate everything more
@@lordofrims, she is also probably a (fine) arts major, because some specific topics discussed by Raden were proven by others to be what people usually learn during that.
Man, i hope it was an accustomary for new vtubers to do a whole stream just dedicated to talking about their character design, rigging and other assets.
I feel like Raden's concept was probably supposed to be like Shiori's, but while Shiori embraced the "I can fix her" while not focusing as much on biology content, Raden decided to focus more on other aspects and didn't played into the trope. It's great how they both ended up being very fun to watch.
Raden design is so on point, I see many cosplay of her (it's beautifully done) and immediately fall in-love with the costume, it actually look very nice IRL. All design elements going well together, solid.
Those are some interesting details behind the design. Raden turned out exceptionally pretty and lovable. She definitely stands out even in Hololive. I would love to see Cover releasing an art book showing early Holomember designs. Thank you management for coming up with the Goth Lolita concept for Raden. I assume it was done to contrast the super bright design of Hajime.
Can we just have an entire stream of Raden with her face close to the camera? Her face is absolutely gorgeous and her smile is insanely cute together with her energy.
The distance between the design, the designers prefrence and the talents personality is a great space for fun meta talk. I hope everyone feels satisfied now. Thanks for the TL
i really appreciate the attention to detail you gave these subs. reflecting kochira-den to voila-den and kochira, deden to voila! tada! when she forgot to do it, caught my eye. awesome stuff
Thank you for the hard work of translating! Honestly, out of all the JP talents, the only one that I was totally drawn to from the first time I saw her, was Raden. The sharp edges and distinct colours with her hair, mixed with her style of clothing, in my mind the design is a joy for the senses. Mix that with her personality that somewhat contrast her looks and add her knowledge about art, it's such a good fit it could never be any other way! Seeing her and Kaoming-sensei talk so openly about the design process is really refreshing too.
Friendly reminder that artists have to audition if they want to be a mama for Hololive future talents after Hololive became big. There's so much artist wanting to design for Hololive but only few can be the chosen ones.
I feel that one thing Cover could implement for the design process of the character that then becomes the vTuber, is a "faceless" kugutsu that behaves as the rigged final form would, but have no specific features. This would then be used by the talent to either read a few lines or just have an introduction "letter" to the creator. Like "Hello, i'm so and so, chit chat." IMHO, this would bond the character even more to the talent. That said, i can't say that the current method works poorly. Bout the only thing that i can think off that didn't fully jive between the two (talent and creator) would be Bloop. In most of the other cases, the talent took to the creation/character like glue. Just some stray thoughts i had. That said, thank you for the translation, even tho i know how to speak and understand Japanese, like any skill, not exercising it makes one rusty at it - so i missed a lot of context. Awesome translation!
Oh goodness, that bit near the end about the teeth, I have the same exact issue, sharp teeth, especially the canines and the first two top teeth of the molar rows. Feeling my mouth right now with my tongue, I feel two scars in my mouth, on both sides of my inner cheeks where my teeth meet when my mouth is closed. Mouth ulcers are a common annoyance for me, especially as I enjoy a lot of acidic foods and drinks. I've had a mouth ulcer stay for the longest time ---nearly a month, I believe--- on my left inner cheek near the gums because I could not lay off the coffee and the pineapple and lime juice; not together mind you, they're just beverages I enjoy separately.
& here i was thinking that her hair stripes were supposed to be cigarette ash. It's ok Kaoming-sensei, we all gave up on the dream of Radeen Onee-san after that religious experience of a debut
Despite everything else Kaoming-sensei managed to birth out one of, if not the best character design in Hololive. I love Raden's design so much. Everything about her yells character and attention to detail. I also realized this a bit late, but it seems that she managed to pull off that "semi-realistic" face design that redjuice-sensei kinda failed to do first time around with IRyS.
At 8:26 does that mean that raden (and maybe her group aswell) was recruited before cover had complete concept of the character yet? That also means her character also includes part of the talent themself then? I wonder if other group within holopro also does it this way.
It's probably case by case thing. Some talents are auditioned for an already established role, while others help figure out the final character. In Niji JP there are known cases of auditions for a pre-established character (Ibrahim, for example).
To me, the best part about hololive and vtubing in general is how often they switch between in-character and out of character. Devil being an angel, or idol being a comedian. It's the best of both worlds. So even if Raden doesn't match her aritsts original image, she has moments where she makes the image her own, and moments where she embodies her sensei's initial vision.
I'm sure you mean Towa with that "Devil being an angel", but if you look up Towa's actual lore you'd notice that Towa is actually perfectly in-character
Thank you for this translation 🙏 I'm sad that Raden feels so bad about her image being different than intended 😂 I was interpreting that the fusing of design and personality is more of a positive outcome. Sure but I don’t think it’s too different at the end of day in that aspect from western to JP ones, thier own entertainer personality that they have for stream is still basically 99% of what they will portray regardless of thier character except for some phrases or situations where they would play more into thier character. It would be impossible to fully play a character and only do things that would fit it 100% of the time without regard for thier own interests or personality with the amount they are live, if that makes sense. So in my opinion they are all kind of ”putting on a 2d halloween costume version of themselves” and there is nothing wrong with that
