I tried to make a Bluesbreaker from a kit I bought. Didn't work when I finished it. Had to send it to you and you fixed it up for me. That's been over 10 years ago and I'm still using it. Thanks
In a way, I find these "in the band context" comparisons to be a lot more useful. I find myself loving specific pedal sounds when demoed only to not care for them in certain contexts. You have the guitar and amp which make a difference, but also it can be hard to understand how a sound will actually sound in the mix of the rest of the instruments when you're only listening to the guitar. It's fun to listen to guitar only and hear all the details, but I think putting it in a mix is more useful. Of course, it's also a lot more work to record, which is probably why we don't see this often with pedal demos. So thanks. I like these. Keep it up!
I love the history lesson of the Blues Breaker and the comedic questions raised at the end. Of note, the Boss Blues Driver and MXR Fat Sugar pedals have awesome blues tones IMO.
I'm using the Charlie Brown more often than the MG these days, it really does the low-gain thing better than most other high-gain JTM "distortion" pedals. It likes my modern-style (kinda bright) Duncan-Designed humbuggies as well. For high-gain JTM/Plexi stuff I'm using either a Jetter Gain Stage Black (AC/DC in box, no BS) or Greer Amps Little Samson.
Just got a CB. Great tone, really. I think you get better tone using the Charlie Brown and another mild overdrive (amp or pedal) than by using a pedal with more gain.
Hey Josh ... i think you could do an episode comparing the JTM45, the Plexi, and the JTM 800..... and the pedals based on them.... the jams today were great !!! hard to pick a favourite !!!
Another super nice video! I like to think when I play blues, I am a bluesbreaker. But maybe that's because I'm regularly playing along to a copy of that very special John Mayall record my parents gave to me. They've bought it back in the days and it's an irreplaceable treasure to me. Thank you JHS for doing this video.
Hey Josh, I used to come here for pedal info. I now come for the info, the excellent jams, the great music history lessons and my weekly infusion of comedy. Keep up the great work !!!
JHS makes solid stuff. King of Tone is however a really special circuit. It’s my most important pedal along with my Maxon PH-350 Phaser. Everybody should have at least one JHS pedal though....mine is the Pulp n Peel. Paired with some of the wonderful modern delays that Strymon etc are doing, anything you are missing in the “it almost sounds like tape” realm is elevated from that orange squeezer circuit into virtually sounding like tape. It’s very musical. I prefer it to the Cali even.
@Ben Hackett Clapton ditched the full stacks after Cream to shy away from the guitar hero image, not because of master volumes. The Band and Delaney and Bonnie, who were using Fenders, were his two big influences then. He has said that he uses Tweeds now because they sound like a good Marshall and are more consistent. Vintage Marshalls vary in sound a lot.
The word or concept of transparent was not even invented. In that magical session, Slowhand created the sound of classic rock by pairing that Marshall amplifier with a Les Paul guitar. Every contemporary guitarist of the day ran to capture that tone. In fact the term blues breaker was adopted for that amp
Not only do you make great pedals, you are a super nice guy. I think that is cool that you used to live in Tupelo, MS former home of the King Elvis Presley.
I dug the jam with the Charlie Brown... definitely do a bluesbreaker comparison video! My super cheap used find of a bluesbreaker clone by Chicago Stompworks is always on, it may not be a morning glory, but it’s a desert island pedal for sure.
Got a great price on a Rat on craigslist and the guy had Bluesbreaker and 1971 Colorsound Overdriver clones for real cheap so i bought those too. From the first second that i played through the Blooze Machine i was floored. I use it as an always on or boost. What a great sound! Changes everything!
Very informative, and I appreciate how other pedal makers are mentioned with respect. This is for people who enjoy playing guitar and exploring all the options to find sounds they love.
The Expandora is basically 2 Proco Rats in a box. I love it. I do not like the Kilt because it is to refined. Nothing wrong with it as a dirt pedal ...it just looses that tear your face quality of the Expandora! Great idea for a show Pat!
John Mayer Continuum album is one of my desert island albums. The solo in “I don’t trust myself with loving you” is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. It’s simple but has that exceptional clean slightly pushed overdrive sound that is out of this world.
I play bass and love hearing all the great pedals, and I love to ride my bicycle . Can you do a bike check on all your bikes also please. Since seeing your dirty kanza t shirt I thought would ask. Many thanks
I can't stop watching these vids--they are so cool and informative that I want to buy every one of his pedals...PLUS the JTM45 Bluesbreaker amp, which I have zero use for because I'm not even gigging.
Have you ever broken down Hendrix’s Marshall amp?I know PRS took one head and dialed in a new creation and are asking over 4 grand. I think Marshall has tried to reissue a hand wired Marshall , chasing Jimi’s live tone. What is out there today that can recreate his electric tone that won’t break the bank? Really always enjoy your work. It’s obvious you do what you love. Much love and appreciation. Just another lead guitar player from Texas✌🏻
I came across this video accidentally, and I'm glad I did. I've built 4 overdrives in a box including blues breaker. I don't have an amp now so I'm using these overdrives as a preamp to an active speakers. The blues breaker sounded amazing after doing what I saw in your video, all controls turned up. Thanks for that. I knew setting it is complicated because everything effects everything in the blues breaker.
* Important footnote: Eric's Dallas Rangemaster treble booster was pictured on top of his JTM45, so that's part of the sound too (I have an Analogman Beano Boost clone)
If you’re talking about Clapton, there is no picture of him using a treble booster. He says he never used one. The engineer says he never used one. It’s a myth he used one. The Beano record sound is a Les Paul with PAF’s into a dimed Blues Breaker amp. It’s inaccurately documented that he used a range master or fuzz at different points. Straight to amp.
Josh, this is like... My favourite video ever... Not only some cool information I was hoping you would talk about some day, but also it was the funniest thing ever... Thanks for sharing your awesomeness!!!
My guitar Tutor have combo, that is result of a car crash. In the crash some Peavey combo with big spring reverb and Mrashall JTM45 head was damaged. So now the Amp head lives in the combo and have the Reverb implemented.
I bought the three pedals from that range when I first started playing, mostly because they were cheap (£30 each). A lucky time to start getting in to gear.
Blues Breaker should totally be the name of an anti-depressant.
Hahahaha!

Now what I want to know is: was Eric Clapton trying to find that "transparent" overdrive?
@Ben Hackett Nope, he was going after the "Brown sound". By turning down his tone knob.
Ben Hackett Hendrix was doing that over a decade before that chode Van Halen
@Ben Hackett Clapton was cranking his stacks ten years before van Halen
Not only do you make great pedals, you are a super nice guy. I think that is cool that you used to live in Tupelo, MS former home of the King Elvis Presley.
Always fun to see the moment when the acid hits.
9:59 definitely a Helmet vibe on this one. One of the best jams, to be so simple. The lock is impeccable.
I fucking love these vids. Great info about stuff I’m interested in. Keep up the great work Josh!
Love the metaphysical freak-out(s) at the end of each segment. The BB is an ineffable musical enigma, shrouded in mystery, wrapped up in a taco.
Changes everything!
love the little history lessons
Very informative, and I appreciate how other pedal makers are mentioned with respect. This is for people who enjoy playing guitar and exploring all the options to find sounds they love.
I would love to hear the story behind the Bixonic Expandora and what happened to it. Of course, you can connect it to the Kilt.
The Expandora is basically 2 Proco Rats in a box. I love it. I do not like the Kilt because it is to refined. Nothing wrong with it as a dirt pedal ...it just looses that tear your face quality of the Expandora! Great idea for a show Pat!
I love the expandora, had no idea it was rats! Best drive pedal ever
This channel is a consistent source of joy for me. Seriously great.
John Mayer Continuum album is one of my desert island albums. The solo in “I don’t trust myself with loving you” is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. It’s simple but has that exceptional clean slightly pushed overdrive sound that is out of this world.
THIS was the exact solo that made me start chasing tone!
That drum sound on Charlie Brown demo is something to be proud of.
Just loved that end hahaha, I have a friend always gets that crazy thinking to much 😂
Wow, nice to see you here man. Great fan of JHS Pedals and of your work!!
The little tune at the beginning of your videos cures my anxiety!
I play bass and love hearing all the great pedals, and I love to ride my bicycle .
Can you do a bike check on all your bikes also please. Since seeing your dirty kanza t shirt I thought would ask. Many thanks
I have grown obsessed with this channel, such good stuff
Please do a video on the Marshall Guv'nor. That pedal needs more love.
Thanks for always making me stop reading about gear and start playing guitar
SWEETWATER Rules! just sayin'
Early 90's my rig was Les Paul>DriveMaster>Phase45>1972 DR-103 HIWATT
!
Yes, please... give us a a video comparing the various blues breaker pedals. Thanks a bunch.
A Blues Breaker is a member of John Mayall's band. ;)
This dude is so genuine...
The black keys magic potion and attack and release are a great display of bluesbreakers!
Not to totally jump ship from Marshall stuff, but what about an episode with Moog pedals?
I bought the three pedals from that range when I first started playing, mostly because they were cheap (£30 each). A lucky time to start getting in to gear.
