      We went on the jeep excursion in the beginning of August. The salmon are running in the rivers. The big brown bears are feeding on the salmon in the rivers. We pulled over on the island and there was a bear right there in the river below me. Great photos!

    TH-cam randomly recommended this video to me earlier tonight, so I thought I'd take a look because, I am a born, and raised, and currently still living IN JUNEAU, ALASKA right now. I have to say, this was a fun video to watch. Especially coming from a tourists point of view. LOL, I even worked at the TRAM wayyyy back when I was about 19-20. (I'm 37 now, it's been there a while now). Many locals take the tram up during the summers and hike down.. It can be challenging living in such a small town, but there is certainly lots of hiking, and plenty of outside adventures. Also, ALL those shops you saw downtown close during winter, and only open during cruise ship season. (minus just a FEW).
    You and your Mom seem like a great family, and I loved that it was the two of you traveling and having a little family ALASKAN vacation. THANK YOU for "shopping local", and for the fun video! I hope others will watch this. You got me to subscribe! If your mom does move here, tell her it will be pretty easy to find work. And if she does move here - hey call me, and I will take you on that tram! lol! My names Emily, may you and your Mom have a wonderful Summer, and safe travels!
    P.S. Now I'm hungry, and I want that crab bisque and rolls! (SO GOOD!) I used to work at McGivney's bar and grill about 6 or so years ago (same owner), and I pretty much ONLY worked there for the crab cakes. It was most definitely what I ordered EVERY single shift. Oh, and fun fact, I also got married on that cruise ship you guys were on (but now happily divorced). Sorry for such a long comment. Splendid video, informative, and entertaining. You are a great speaker (and even better editor) and did a superb job with speaking about Alaska, and putting some random facts in here and there, I loved it!

      Wow! First of all thank you for watching! I don’t mind the long comment at all! I may have to keep convincing my mom to just move to AK so that I have a place to visit and stay for long periods of time! Haha thank you again for the nice comments!

    I love that you loved Juneau! I'm a Mendenhall (my maiden name) and that glacier was named after one of my ancestors. I live closer to Fairbanks, however, in a little town called Delta Junction. I'm sure you will enjoy the rest of your cruise, and so glad your mom gets to experience it. Thanks for this look at our capital!

    That’s my daughter Meg- the park ranger who has been there a year. Her father and I went to see her there last August. We saw lots of whales but no bears sadly. We enjoyed the Red Dog Saloon.

  • @karlahart_AK
    @karlahart_AK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Jay, you did a tremendous job of capturing Juneau and both you and your mom's appreciation and enthusiasm is contagious. I watched through the eyes of a Juneau resident. Under the eagle that you showed is an eagle's nest, clearly visible. The crowds at the Mendenhall can become utterly unbearable, for locals, visitors, and the staff there. You show what a wonderful time can be had if we have reasonable levels of cruise tourism. At peak, pre pandemic, those whales would have been surrounded by up to 15 or more whale watching boats, the platform where you talked with the rangers would be filled elbow to elbow with crowds. The view you had when walking the shoreline trying to cross the creek and looking at the bridge was eye opening. That is the area where the bears hang out when the salmon are running a place I've only been in the past twenty years in the winter, because geography and management discourage people there. You hit the safe time to get there.
    If you and your mom, or just your mom, want to fly to Juneau, in a week I'll show you experiences you won't ever get from a cruise ship and that destination travel for Alaska has advantages over cruising and (in normal times) arriving with 4,000 other passenger (possibly on a day when we have five ships in port at the same time.
    And, in the background of some of your video, I saw my niece.

    • @Mrshinz
      @Mrshinz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought the same thing! I live here, too! The video was recommended to me, and I enjoyed watching he and his mom stroll through downtown, eat at the crab shack, and even the glacier. I was looking for face I knew, too! HAHA! I didn't recognize Emma, the tour girl by the Tram, but I loved her, and I thought she had a huge personality, and a job well done, Emma! I loved that he told the viewers the population, and about the weird weather we have. Spot ON. ;-)

      Juneau is located in the Tongass National Forest which is 17.6 million acres. It's a temporate rainforest. It's quite similar to coastal Washington and British Columbia. Summer is definitely the best time to visit. I'm about 200 miles south in Wrangell. I call Wrangell the hidden gem of Southeast Alaska. Wrangell is about two miles from the Stikine River delta. The Stikine River is the fastest free flowing navigable river in North America. We are near the Shakes Glacier and the LeConte Glacier. There is also, nearby the Anan Bear Observatory.

    So glad you could enjoy Juneau! Alaska is amazing and there's so much more to do than what you think about.
    The differences between getting an excursion on the cruise ships versus on shore is the ones who work with the cruise ships will not leave without you. The ones booked on shore, if something happens and the tour somehow can't make it back in time, you will be left.

    So glad you enjoyed Juneau! I have been there many times and I still love it. There is nothing like coming in on a ship and seeing Alaska. I might recommend too....I have always loved sailing there in September. The weather is a little more "iffy", but, you get to enjoy the cooler weather. Nothing like sitting under the stars in Alaska in a hot tub at night. More stars than you can imagine. Also, when you go in September, alot of the stores are handing end of season sales, and, you can really get some good deals. If you are going to Ketchikan, cannot recommend highly enough the canned smoked salmon! It is amazing. I ordered it for years to be sent to me in Missouri. Fantastic! Your absolutely right. I always use HAL for Alaska....it is super informative and it is all about nature and your surroundings. My favorite port is Sitka. I hope you go there. Love seeing your excitement and this once in a lifetime trip for your mother. FYI....Denali National Park hires people to work in the summers from the lower 48!

    Your video was near and dear to my heart. I lived in Juneau for a 6-month internship in 2008. I have traveled all over the world but it is still the most stunningly beautiful place I have ever been. And your right, video dosen’t do it justice. If you go back, make sure to zipline or hike on Douglas Island where the temperate rainforest has retaken an old 1800s mine. Or take the longer boat ride to another glacier (the name escapes me at this moment). It was so stunning and baby sea lions were laying on the icebergs all around us and there was some minor calving. There is so much to see and do in Juneau! Its such a beautiful and special place.

      Oh and Diamonds International... I went in there at Grand Cayman mostly out of pure curiosity of who buys diamonds on a cruise. Scam I swear. The guy thought my cheapo $3 crystal stud earrings were actual diamonds. *facepalm* I should have tried to trade them... but I am not that kind of person. Had a good laugh about him suggesting they were real after I left.

    Great video! Seeing whales in the wild is the best! My parents lived in a small island near Vancouver Island and they would swim past every now and then. Everyone in town was on a phone list and they would text when they came by. I saw them swim past (Orcas) about ten feet from the shore. We saw the blowholes and the cool noises. It was a whole pod. Most breathtaking thing I have e we seen!

No thanks J. Don’t need to see a black bear. You guys look so isolated but know you were careful. $98 for 2 crab legs , 3 crab cakes , a 🍺 and a 🥤. Ok. At least it was a tasty snack. Great video! I grew up in Juneau so i can tell you that there are many brown bears close by. you were right next to admiralty island while on the whale watching tour which has possibly the densest brown bear population in the world. if you were to head up the taku river they are also very common up there. there is a tour that takes you partly up the river via float plane where you have a king salmon dinner across from the beautiful taku glacier. if you were to travel further up the river you would pass many side sloughs and creeks that i grew up fishing with my family and friends. also along the way is a small community of cabins that some juneau locals have built and visit every spring and summer. my parents built our cabin before i was born so i was very fortunate to grow up with a little piece of wilderness paradise just a boat ride away.

    I did a similar excursion when I did my Alaskan cruise on RCL in 2018. Mine was booked with RCL and it was a photography tour. My favorite out of all Alaskan tours.

    At Diamonds International they use to have a charm bracelet that you can buy. When you travel to all the different ports in the Caribbean, you could collect little charms to put on the bracelet that represented that port from the store there. They would come in different things such as Dolphins, Stars, Sea Shells, Palm Trees, Flip-Flops, etc. They give you a little card to show at each store in whatever port you arrive in. Of course, it wasn't real gold. My wife collected around 15 of them to add to her bracelet. Just a little something different to do when you first get off the ship.

    All of the towns in SE Alaska are VERY small similar to Juneau. Do realize that Anchorage has a population of nearly 400,00 and has most of the amenities that you would find in most American cities.

    J. IMO this was your best video ever! You are very talented, and your Mom is a delightful co-host. You really gave us the flavor of your experiences there. - As for black bears, they are really common in North American. They are the least dangerous as long as people don't act stupid, but I would still be afraid if I saw one. They are said to be able to smell food from a very long distance away, so you know they can smell us before we even see them. I was surprised the guides didn't say there were grizzlies. Those I would be terrified of. Anyway, congrats again on all your success.

    How fun!! We LOVED Alaska. Cruise there of course. Just beautiful !!! I usually book excursions through other companies. Never had a bad experience. Also we went up that tram there and I'm not a fan of heights so it was interesting. Very beautiful views.

    wow loved the whale watching tour you both did, shops were very reasonable, the touristy places stores are $29.99 for sweatshirts and $49 up yes that store was reasonable, the crab shack was awesome bet they get their crab right off docks how cool was that. OH now I want to do a Alaska cruise and dog sledding is one I want to do. maybe 2023 or 2024
