I sold a lot of Tomos bikes in the 90's in the Netherlands. We used to say to the customers who couldn't decide between Puch and Tomos "Don't go for the Tomos, they're cheap and more reliable than a Puch so we don't make a lot of money on them". Tomos customers were happy customers!
Then the Chinese 4-stroke scooter era came, because for some reason, everyone wanted a 4-stroke.
Never seen so many warranty cases.Out of warranty? Then the repair costs were higher than the moped was worth. Change the oil too late means end of engine. Broken conrods, pistons, valves, camshafts and cracked heads. Servicing the survivors was/is expensive (more parts to check than the simple 2-stroke). But hey, they were cheap when they bought it!
Seen too many angry customers and i went on to another job.
For 30 years i ride a motorbike, usually in the winter or bad weather. Boring but it takes me from A to B.
In the summer, i ride my moped. Love it, even after all those years. It takes me from A to B, then to C, to D, and so on.

    Story time!
The year is 2001. I was 17, young and stupid and living in a town called Hoorn in Holland. I recently totalled my Piaggio NRG and needed wheels to get to school and work and stuff. I bagged one of these bad boys for 150 euros and that became my mighty steed. It got hopped up a bit with a 70cc kit, I upgraded the carb from the stock 11mm to a Dellorto 21mm and stuck some or other sports exhaust on it (think it was Gianelli, can't remember). It would hit 80kph easily but make no mistake: 80kph on something with the structural rigidity of a flacid penis just after it's seen Susan Boyle is scary. Like holy fuck scary. I could wheelie the thing for days, it accelerated like a trooper and the shove it gave when swapping in to 2nd gear made it double the fun as it was like accelerating all over again.
Thing thing was trashed or crashed every other day, it persisted in rain, snow, hail, sleet, salted roads, no cover, it was hands down the most unloved, most abused piece of machinery I have ever experienced in my 33 years of existence. And the thing just never gave up. Ever. Every single day I'd kick it a couple of times and it'd just fire right up, like an obedient labrador who's just been given a shot of adrenaline or a line of cocaine early in the morning. I eventually fitted a top box so I could carry all my crap around with me and sold it 3 years later to a friend who I've since lost contact with. Real shame, I'd love to know where it is now.
That thing carried me all over Holland day in, day out. I must've racked up 30k kilometres on it (that's what, 28 miles? Dunno, yanks are weird) and it just went on and on. All those stories you read about people who have their fondest memories in their first cars? Hell no. Not even close to the memories I have, and all of them with my trusty Tomos by my side.
Actually, fuck it. I'm gonna find one for sale. Thanks for this Mr Regular, always nice to see Tomos getting a bit of love.

nameloos 99 Tomos had very close ties with Holland. The Dutch division helped develop a few models and their factory made loads of them. Tomos even made bikes for Puch at one point. Saying Tomos isn't Dutch is wrong as the Dutch helped make Tomos what it is today :)

Fun fact: Tomos was actually racing with these mopeds vs Honda Suzuki and Yamaha. The racing was insane, the racers literally wore spandex onesies with no armor whatsoever. I think Tomos actually made about 15 horsepower from a 70cc engine. Pretty amazing stuff. Just read that their 50cc race bikes could reach 205kph!!! And it was also written that they made an engine that had 357hp on 1000cc displacement. What the actual fuck

Oh this brings me back to when I was 15 in the late 90's and I was getting by on my Puch Montana -82. It was older than me but my first proper relationship.
In Sweden, if you lived in a semi rural area having a moped was our first taste of freedom. Mopeds without license were limited to 30km/h (25mph roughly) but they were built for about 70-75kmh and most people hade them running at least at those speeds. All you needed to do was remove a little plug in the gasoline intake of the carborator. And you were set for 70kmh. Then you switched to a more efficient exhaust and the next step was to get a bigger carborator and you were doing 80-85kmh. So you switched to larger out gear since you had so much "excess power" and you had a "moped that ran 90-100km/h that you could take off road whenever the cops tried to stop you... And you knew those back woods like the palm of your hand so the cops were chanceless.
And the engine was so simple, it was the perfect way to learn how it combustion engine works. My crank shaft gave up on me and I had to replace it and clean every part of that engine from residual metal. Took me about a weekend with the help of my step-dad and afterwards it went even better... Oh the memories... Riding along with my friends when I sold it I felt like I was losing a family member. It was such a great time growing up and seeing a bit more of where I grew up.. Thank you for reminding me of those times.
Puch Montana was a great bike for me. Going on road trips and getting to give a ride for that girl you'd had a crush on for ages because you were too young and scared to actually ask her out. That feeling of her holding on to you, trusting you...

I'd be interested to see someone do a proper test of how accurate those speedos were, given that 100kmh is more 125cc territory for 4-strokes, and a 2 stroke typically doesn't have twice the power for the same capacity. I know the clock on my 125 is decidedly optimistic at higher speeds (nudging the 10% legal allowance for inaccuracy, when tracked by phone), who knows how far out the one on a moped meant for less than 50kmh (...did the speedo even read beyond 70~80k?) would have been, in an age before easy GPS verification and the like...

This is almost the same story that my dad tells me, and i never belived him on his word, outruning the cops, the forrests, but yea, i own a Rieju MRX 50, starter bike for me, before that i owned and learned how to drive clutch on a Tomos APN 6s (also 50), my dad had one of thoose when he was young, and when we got it for myself, he was really happy to see me on one of thoose, even if i was stalling like crazy, he was happy to see me not give up, he said if you know how to drive this, u can drive any motorbike, and he was right, one day he asked me if i wanted to go for a ride, i said sure, i was excpeting us to get on his BMW K1200LT, but no, we hoped on the Tomos APN on the Rieju MRX, and he took me through the forest paths, ik them now like the back of my hand aswell, but the 1st time we went there, i got my ass handed to me by a 49 year old man, on a Tomos APN, versus a 16 year old on a Rieju MRX which is a enduro, ive since sold my Tomos APN, had it for half a year, put it up on facebook, had 20 people contact me in under a week, im sad to see the Tomos leave our house hold, but i started making my 125 licence and i need money for a 125 at this point, my first driving hour my instructor asked me if i have riden anything before, i just said the Tomos APN. His eyes were filled with almost sparks. Half way done with my licence at this point, never fell on my tomos, or rieju, or licence, or many of the puch 250 sg, sgs, tf i have driven (my dad and i restore thoose puch's). Also ridden a 250 KTM crosser and a 500 V4 Honda Magnum, but the APN is still a special bike/moped in my heart and i will never forget all fo the good memories i have of it, its so nice to see it passed on to newer generations like myself, i just hope that more generations ahead of me will be able to enjoy the joy of the 2 strooke dur dur dur dur and the constant checking of the exhaust for blue gas incase u didnt give it enough oil.

Small displacement motorcycles (Honda Cubs, Vespas mopeds and similar bikes) are a blast to ride in a group. I am a huge America car loving guy that has old school large displacement V8 rides (Lincolns and caddy's from the early 1970s) that generally weigh in at 5000+ LBS but my friends and I go out zipping across so Cal on some goofy tiny bikes, Honda ct90, Honda ct70 (which is a street legal mini bike)) a cub 55 andd a buddy that has an insanely fast small frame Vespa honestly it is way more fun then my couches on wheels when we ride together, that being said it is sort of embarrassing when I have ridden by myself... Traffic forms behind you and everyone gives the strangest look but in a group for some reason people cheer and give thumbs up.

Then comes the lack of safety, or actually "What is safety, i like broken neck after accelerating 0.3 seconds" safety level.

The "weedwacker" noise you're getting is because of the exhaust pipe (or at least made a lot worst because of it).
The bike you were on and by the looks of things most in the group are BiTurbo style pipes. These are "speed pipes".
When I bought my Tomos it came with a BiTurbo that I eventually replaced (it kinda had the shit kicked out of it, arguable the whole bike did). If you're buying a bike with a stock pipe or it has a broken pipe I would suggest a Technigas style pipe.
It sounds a lot less like a toy or fart can and it moves the power band down a lot. You WILL slide back on the seat a bit when the "forced induction" kicks in. It's stupid amount of fun.
BiTurbo will give you a higher top end, but I find the lowered and expanded power band of the Technigas is way more useful in traffic. We are talking 5-7 mph anyway, you can get this back with a pack of diamond needle files from china and a couple hours filing the cylinder ports, tons of porting articles on the net.
Have fun with your 2stroke turd :)

I loved to hear the shifting of the 2 speed automatic, it sounded just like the shifting of an American car which was my ultimate dream thanks to the Dukes of Hazzard, The A Team and Knight Rider. In the '80s automatic transmissions were very rare in the Netherlands, only 5% of the cars had one.

"Ask a cop" is unfortunately the WORST legal advice you can give. Cops don't have to fully understand or even know the laws they just have to enforce them which is why they say to argue with the judge not the cop regarding the law. Better advice would be to consult your local DMV and/or Department of Transportation for information regarding mopeds/2-strokes and their requirements/restrictions in your home state. Many of this information can be found on their websites. Other then that these do look like fun and fall into the catagory of "its more fun to ride/drive a slow bike/car fast then a fast bike/car slow."

Talking to a local officer in a small town about a gray area motor vehicle is "due diligence", not necessarily to learn the full intricacies of your local laws. Fucking lol though if you think your local DMV knows more than your local cops. More time wasted waiting for them to look up the shit in the same reference manuals you've already read, without any of the built rapport.

I always wonder why mopeds is not more popular in chronic traffic ingested northern hemisphere cities where the speed mode for cars is either creep or full stop. I mean discounting the crappy Chinese made moped, the Japanese brand is actually reliable and durable. Heck, I have one that was made in 1998 and still going relatively decent, besides for some plastic panel that fell apart years ago. It has about 100 mpg and max speed of 50 mph and unlike TOMOS have an enough low torque that don't require pushing whenever I throttle away.

Tomos might be the best moped manufacturing company ever. I owned tons of them, and i still have a 1987 apn6 and it still runs strong. Unbelivable. And parts are everywhere and easy to fix, but mostly they are very reliable

2007/8 I snatched up one of those 50cc chinese scooters for my wife so she could scoot around town with me (on a standard motorcycle) without having a motorcycle license. Well in illinois I got screwed. At 50cc they required a standard motorcycle plate and license. At 49cc she would have been ok but the title said 50 so that was that. As a tinker type person I started to look up hop ups and a few hundred later I had a 80cc heat kit, cam, exhaust, cvt weights, and carb on it. All in for about $1100 at that point. That thing was a blast! Would carry my 200lbs to 50 no problems which was faster than any road in our town. I took nightly cruises zigzagging through the neighborhoods and could ride all week on a gallon of gas. Did my friends make fun of me for riding a scooter? Yes. Don't care it was a ton of fun and some of them ended up with scoots too. I got a good year and a half out of it before I sold it for around $800. Pretty good smiles per dollar if ask me.

Tomos was the status symbol of every teen in small Dalmatian town I spent my summers in late 80's.And I still like the look of classic Tomos Automatic a3.

I want to be that Uncle! The sheer joy of going feral while being pathetic sounds liberating.
