  • Ed's 2463 total in Vegas 1998. You may note, ed's last dl warmup was on the main platform. He also hit 2 warmup squats (not included here) also on the platform, as did John Binkowski. (there was a plate issue with warmup area)They were done after all lifters in earlier flight finished round. Great meet, you'll also notice the late Doug Furnas handling Ed.

      Not to mention this was after his hamstring injury which prevented him from pulling sumo. No doubt he'd have gotten 2500 if he could've done sumo.

      I respectfully disagree with Andrey Malanichev totaling 2,469.1 raw. Personally I view Ed as overhyped

    • @jakeevans175
      @jakeevans175 10 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      Bryson Presley Over-hyped? Lol he totaled 2463 @237 raw. Malanichev is my favorite lifter and a very humble and down-to-earth guy, but the thing is his total was 6.1 pounds heavier than Coan's while he was in the SHW class (over 308 pounds). I know it's your opinion but i just don't see why someone wouldn't agree that Coan is the GOAT.

    • @Centipede_Solaire
      @Centipede_Solaire 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      how much weight does the single ply gear even add? I heard that back then single ply hardly did anything compared to the gear used now

    • @ugoodHomeBoy
      @ugoodHomeBoy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Ed's single ply is not a standard squat suit dude. That thing would add hardly anything to his squat. This is about as strong as someone can get; and that is what powerlifting is all about. This whole raw vs. geared obsession is beyond retarded. You cannot take this lift or total away from coen because of his fucking shirt.

    • @trickspk3r

    I find it amusing that the vast majority of comparison lifters mentioned in an attempt to downplay the amazing talent of Ed Coan and his G.O.A.T status, shows an equally amazing failure to grasp the concept of body weight by said posters. Show me a lifter who can lift the weights of Coan without ridiculous gear and without the sissy mono lift with a comparable body weight and I'll eat my proverbial hat. Until then, the door's there...GTFO. As a last mention, also note that Ed has exceeded each of these lifts singularly on separate occasions, with a similar body weight and condition. 471kg squat, 265kg bench and 409kg deadlift (this at 100kg bw sumo!)

    • @ReddingRed
      @ReddingRed 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +TheT0nedude I agree with your assessment and it's actually quite brilliant. Ed had to lift, step back, and stabilize with a half ton on his back. The amount of time and effort that takes saps the entire body of energy. Re-racking is the same thing. Having to walk it back in makes the lift much harder.
      For those who want to really examine Ed's benching versus lots of people in modern day powerlifting, just look at how he was able to move his upper body. The bench shirts today make if difficult for lifters to lay down without having their arms stuck in the "up" position. They need 500 pounds on the bar just to get the bar to travel down to their chest! The shirt is a spring that adds more than 200 pounds to max bench numbers.
      Ed Coan is the most physically gifted lifter of our time.

    • @TheT0nedude
      @TheT0nedude 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      COPFIT Media Agreed of course. If Ed had ever stooped to using the pussy monolift I'm sure he could've added more to his already massive squat. It's a fact that Ed lifted true super heavy weight class lifts at 110kg (maybe even at 100kg). He first hit a 1000kg total at 90kg(!) which is frankly ridiculous, at that meet the guy in 2nd (from Finland IIRC) had a total 10% less than him. When has that ever happened in any other world class level sport? (It just doesn't). Most of the guys lifting comparable weights were benefiting from 20-50kg of extra bodyweight, and the effect that has cannot be understated.

      +TheT0nedude Brett gibbs and jesse norris maybe. They both compete in IPF with really strict rules, such as drug testing, two hour weigh ins, and no knee wraps. And obviously no bench shirts. I think they are comparable.

    • @TheT0nedude
      @TheT0nedude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      booby b Just checked them out and both very strong lifters. It's possible for sure although Jesse is young and time will tell. Coan dominated 5 body weight classes with well over 10x totals (in each) from teenage years and up. Jesse usually competes raw (kudos) - which is very difficult to evaluate compared to equipped. Just watched Jesse pull 800lbs raw @198lbs (although lockout was suspect) but nevertheless impressive indeed -this was exhibition not judged. Compare that to Coan who pulled 860 at same bodyweight (also raw) at the Worlds. Only lift Coan actually did raw...

      I'd argue that lamar gant is the greatest. He won the world champions 15 years straight and it was never close. No man will ever do that again. He could have gone for 20 if he wanted too. Ed won like 6 and he tested positive 3x also. Both great but lamar is the best no question.

    • @ragingtrain1417
      @ragingtrain1417 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +stephen ruby I mentioned this to another poster but Ed did not test positive for steroids in 2 of the three suspensions by the IPF. The first time he DID test positive and he readily admitted he'd taken some Deca 6months prior to heal his torn pec and didn't realize how long it stayed in the system. The last two times he did NOT test positive for steroids. His test/epi-testosterone ratio has too high both times which implies he was using external testosterone. Ed denied ever doing that but the IPF basically didn't care.

    a 2463 total... what makes him the GOAT is that this is essentially a raw total with those knee wraps not doing much more than ace bandage and the shirt and singlet not giving more than a tight under armour shirt. even though this is a single ply total, he could have easily pulled off at least a 2200-2300 total in today's raw IPF/USAPL federation as a 220 or 242 lifter which would be even today absolutely untouchable.

      That walk out is without peer. Total control of over 1000 pounds! Walking out the weight takes a tremendous amount of energy. Today, lifters not only squat above parallel, but do not have to walk out the weight when the meet involves the appropriate equipment. Ed Coan's squat at this meet looked easy. He had another 30 to 50 pounds in him.

    More than the Kaz at 330 lbs bodyweight with 2420 not surpasssed total since 1981. All SHWs up to 400 lbs+ bodyweight no chance. Until Ed comes along in 1998 at 240 lbs in bodyweight... No words do justice to the magnificence of the GOAT, Ed Coan. Imagine him with nowadays supplements...
