I taught myself to read charts when I was a child, fifty years ago, using my mother’s Magic Crochet magazines. I made lots of beautiful doilies in cotton string this way. I’m a visual learner. I didn’t even know of charts until this video. Now that I do know, I think it is easier for me to read than written out instructions. It reminds me of putting legos based on the pictures in the book
Excellent video! I tried to read a symbol pattern and couldn’t get it. I’m not sure if it had a legend or not. I’m just getting half way decent at reading a written pattern. It’s nice to have it to go along with a tutorial. You’ve done a wonderful job of teaching this. Thank-you!😀

Donna you as always amaze me….I suffered a severe head injury….I used to make thread doilies using symbols and read patterns. Not now…. Everything I read or see confounds me. I have made almost everything you make bc you are an amazing teacher. I loved making those Christmas gnomes last year. I can read pattern a bit better….I was wondering if charts for a sweater will give chain count? Anyway thanks again for helping my rehab!
Sometimes charts for a sweater will show a chain count, but sometimes not. It mostly depends upon the designer and how detailed they are with their instructions.

Thank you for this! I avoid anything with a chart.. I prefer written patterns. This shows small matching( swatch & chart right above the crocheting) examples… that makes it much more understandable! Wonderful how-to!

Edit: I love this! This helps me understand it because I have ADHD and struggle with processing new information without audible things and examples. Reading doesn’t work,nor does just talking. But talking and examples like this help so much. So thank you because this is heaven. Why is crochet like mf biology! I hate it. But I wanna learn it. But it’s difficult because I have trouble reading this without actual real images! An no one else does it! But they need to. Why? To make it easier for me and others! I’ll start a riot with my frustration!
These symbols were well designed, first time I came across these charts and made an ''intermediate'' doily, I guessed what they all meant and only later thought to look up a legend

My mother had some Magic Crochet books , but she passed in 2010 3 yes after my husband. Now they're mine. Beautiful patterns in them.
