This is a great debate. Is dumpster diving illegal? My sister is a police officer and has NEVER arrested anyone for dumpster diving. The dumpster MUST have a private property sign or else it's free game. Don't be afraid to hop in there and grab stuff. Glad to see you helping Adam!
Here in New Zealand its illegal its classed as stealing and tresspassing but our supermarkets donate all the stock that is just before the best before date and the fresh food such as ham rolls and things like that to the food banks other than that the other non food stores can take the bar codes off and send it all back to the companys they got it from and they get a portion of there money back.
Then why are you and tough guy always so scared. Seems a little strange. Maybe you know you are wrong. You send out a bad message. Why not tell kids it's ok even if people tell you no. Get a job.

We go twice a week to dumpsters for aldi, dollar general, amazon fresh, whole foods, petstores, big lots and dollar tree in different towns. What we cant use, we give to others. It always amazes me what gets thrown away to get carted out to landfills. It is such a waste of food and products that will not break down in 500+years in landfills. We give to 2 non profits that feeds the homeless and women & children fleeing domestic violence. Any organic foods we find that is beyond saving to eat, i always take to get seeds out of them, ie: sweet peppers, hot peppers, roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes of all colors, heirloom variety tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, potatoes that are sprouting, onions that are sprouting, any and all kinds of melons, winter squashes, pumpkins, butternut squash, apples, and black sweet cherries. I clean the seeds, ferment the ones that have to be fermented, rinse and dry them and save them for free seed swaps. The veggie parts that are not g A1ood for eating, i give to our worm bins, and the worms creat black gold compost for our gardens. We waste nothing. I have taken organic gourmet mushroom packets that were thrown away, and gotten spore prints off of one or 2 that may still be good in the packet, to make mycelium to grow gourmet mushrooms indoors and some we have scattered into the woods by hardwood trees and fallen trees. We grow a lot of fruits and veggies on our property. I have even sprouted chestnuts, which are in the stores now through the holidays and have planted chestnut trees, which will be producing nuts in about 3 to 5 years. Some of those chestnut saplings we plant on hikes. We spend very little at the grocery stores. What our budget is set for food every month, whatever we dont use goes towards bigger projects for our home or vehicle maintenance or savings. The hardest part about dumpster diving is the first diving... the fear of it. Then it gets easier. You are saving stuff from landfills... our environment.

From my understanding, it's only illegal under the private property rule. Otherwise dumpster diving is not illegal.
