If Halle Berry Storm ever returns in the MCU, and they set up the same joke -- "Know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning?" -- how should she end the joke this time?
Erik's pitch: A voice answers: "No, but I know what happens to a frog." And then Throg appears, absorbs the lightning, and zaps a Kang.
@NewRockstars Stan Lees first Marvel cameo was in the Trial of the Incredible Hulk movie
How should I know? I’ve never done that to a poor toad.
Er. No.
same thing, but the line is delivered after the bolt and maybe a deja vu tingle
Crazy how Jackman is the only live action Wolverine we have had in almost 25 years.
I can’t imagine anyone else being wolverine
I don't mean to be rude but does anyone remember X-Men origins: Wolverine?
Yea its still Hugh?@@theblueflamingo2352

My favorite Magneto moment is in last stand where Pyro says he would have killed Charles if asked and Magneto instantly stops him and says "Charles Xavier has done more for mutants than you'll ever know..." It showed us that Magneto may not agree with Charles "peace" methods, but still respected him
And you can see his eyes water while saying that too
@@thepubknight6144 same emotion when Logan told him he sat there and watched him die... It was almost like "that was low you bastard!" Lol.
Even when I was a little kid I noticed and appreciated that moment. Now a days we don’t have heroes or villains or even invewteeens respecting one another wether they agree or not
True and also that he still valued him as a friend......in some way
Favorite line: Scott says "Storm, fry him" then Magneto says "ah yes, a bolt of lightning into a giant copper conductor... I thought you lived at the school" 😂😂😂😂
He ate them up with that tbh lmfao
I hope that the next Magneto can bring the sass that McKellen had.
@@RailroadTyfassbender should be the magneto for the mcu
All the more reason they should have been allowed to read comic books about their characters. Storm could have had him every which way inside of that statue without using lightning.
@@cnaticalthat could actually go hard
Fun fact: When Chris Claremont watched the film at his local theater; he freaked out (in a good way) when Rogue asked Logan if the claws hurt him and he replied "Everytime".
Because he wrote a similar dialogue/character flaw about Wolverine in his X-Men run.
Also fun fact; Claremont modeled the characters on the former Israeli prime ministers David Ben-Gurion & Menachem Begin, not MLK Jr and Malcom X
Another fun fact: Claremont wrote that Wolverine urinates blood due to an unknown claw!!
@@jcorona5457 wait what???!!!
@jcorona5457 He shits blood too, for the same reason.
@@dougsmith6262reminds me of this one time at band camp, for a different reason
I always thought Logan suggesting Storm and Jean throw him instead of Scott was more than just an ego thing, but a logical and tactical decision, knowing he'd survive any mishaps with the plan, where Scott would absolutely fall to his death.
Me too. He was being a team player. Jean could use his metal body to focus more.
He says that if he doesn't make it, Cyclops can then take the shot.
It was just good thinking and team work.
Well I always assumed he said it cause he is too attached to Rogue in a father figure way.
Yeah, Cyclops is more of a ranged character, where Wolverine is a melee character.
That's what I thought too. After all Wolverine was the only "indestructible" member of the group
Thanks for talking about Bryan Singer’s treatment of his actors. It’s easy to ignore this stuff with things we like, but thank you for not pushing it under the rug.

I heard somewhere that in the original script, Toad had several lines where he said "do you know what happens to a toad..." and Storm's line was meant to be a witty callback/retort
It was “Do you know what happens WHEN a toad…” as in it’s what happens to the opponent rather than him, Storm as you say turns it into a retort.
Storm was also supposed to end with “…they croak!” Which is a bad ass line that was dropped unfortunately.
The mystique eyes thing always reminded me of the Thriller video… when mj’s eyes flash yellow at the very end…
That was intentional by the director
Chris Clairemont said nightcrawler's look , facial features and his hair was inspired by that same iconic Thriller image
I always figured it was since both Michael and Kurt see themselves as monsters but are deeply spiritual good natured men
😆😆😆😆😆
Commenting after Quiet on Set has aired, that's Brian Peck in the Stan Lee cameo scene. 😳
Bryan Singer and Brian Peck? 🤔
RIP Michael Kamen
He made that moment between Logan and Rogue feel so special and timeless
The casting for cyclops is great. Very underrated
Agreed
In regards to wolverines claws:
The reason they appear to be “constructed” in this and then retconned to have bone claws, is because when this movie was made (2000) the only existing origin for wolverine’s claws was Barry Windsor Smith’s “Marvel Presents: Wolverine: Weapon X” which was the story that introduced the idea of how wolverine got his claws, before that it just wasn’t talked about. More attached⬇️
And in X-men Origins: Wolverine (2009) retcons the fact that Logan had Bone claws for Decades before the adamantium was graphed to his bones. Which is from the Wolverine Origin comic run from 2001-2002 just one year after the original X-men movie!
Awesome write-up. I love seeing MCP referenced. The concept of bone claws was first introduced in the comics back in 1993, during the Fatal Attractions crossover event. In Wolverine (vol. 2) 75, Magneto pulls the adamantium out of Wolvie’s body. Later in the issue Wolvie pops his claws, revealing the bone claws. Wasn’t until issue 145 of the same series in 1999 that the adamantium was restored to his claws!
@@TalkinSnikt no totally I specifically meant it in terms of timeline and in regards to the way the movies handled it becuase prior to Wolverine Origins (comic) people debated on weather or not his bone claws were always his, or if his body was attempting to “regenerate” the claws after magneto removed the adamantium. But wolverine origins definitively answers that question.
@@willknight685 oh for sure. Origin absolutely ended all debate.
The Thanos/Hulk snap energy is exactly what I feel like they'll use to bring in the mutants. I'm so glad that it was brought up in this video, I think they really could work it into that idea.
How will this explain the mutants who existed in past - like Wolverine, Apocalypse, etc
@@bhavyakjainPerhaps the Snap has affected the universe across time as well as it does have the power of the Time Stone as well.
X-men were my favorite as a child and when these movies came out I was beyond hyped. They hold a special place in my heart despite some flaws in retrospect.
Same the nostalgia
+1 here, actually I loved x-men: apocalypse, and apparently everyone hates it
I love every one of them, except for Dark Phoenix lol, for the same reason@@cheogt4623
Same. Played the video game constantly too.
Look how gorgeous and young Hugh jackman looks 😩😩 can’t believe this was released in the year 2000 and I didn’t realize Kevin feige has worked for marvel all this time. He definitely deserves the position he’s in. I have a lot more respect for him his growth with the company, especially the company like that is very motivating
The fact that he's only gotten more beautiful and ranged talent wise is like the extra slay on top
Like the fact that he's gonna be Wolvie AGAIN all this time later is just so iconic I am actually really bananas about that
I'm so stoked to watch NR break down all these films!
Right! I’ve been waiting for them!
Same!
I thought that Storm line was so badass as a kid lol
I thought the original punchline to "what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning" was supposed to be, "it croaks."
That's canon
Pruned timeline
Most ridiculous line in all these movies combined and wish it leave that space in my memory 😂
May it follow you through your life's journey @@cricketpickett7296
@cricketpickett7296 I still find that line popping into my head, _completely_ uninvited, to this day. Its one of those things that was so bad it was eternally burnt into my brain. I guess thats _some_ kinda achievement, I guess
I could be wrong here but I think the screws you pointed out were part of the prop claws Jackman were using on set that they didn’t digitally hide or remove.
Facts
Now that makes sense.
My favorite detail is when Magneto leaves his office, the balls of the Newton’s Cradle drop.
Lol yeah that was a nice detail
The Inhumans weren't created to get around the X-Men film rights issues, considering they have existed within Marvel Comics since the 60s, and Marvel sold the film rights to the X-Men in the 90s. They did, however, push them within the comics and position them as a replacement to the X-Men but this push began in the early 2010s
oh
Dougray Scott was originally cast as Wolverine in the first X-Men movie but wasn’t able to continue with the production because he suffered an injury while filming Mission Impossible 2. Thank God the role went to Hugh Jackman.
I'll raise you with Bob Hoskins from 90s Super Mario and Roger Rabbit
Thank you for never side stepping some of the darker issues in your videos. That’s super creepy about Burton.
The toad struck by lightning line is unironically hilarious and badass
I can't help but feel like casting Shawn Ashmore as Lamplighter was kind of a back-door reference to him being Iceman. 😂😂
I wish they could/would make a box set of all the X-Men/Wolverine/Mutants movies so I can actually watch them, because they took a bunch off of Disney+ before I could see them!
Yeah including the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past since only a handful of us have seen it
123???
If you haven’t seen these movies you have no one to blame but yourself…. Certainly not Disney+‘s fault 😂😂😢😂😢
Buy the movies on dvd and watch them, problem solved
@@BlakHeart666 that's not available everywhere ykr? Nd most people don't even have dvd players now lmao, even modern laptops completely removed them
I’m so glad and love the fact you mentioned Rob and his great work on Comics Explained.
100% agree. Rob's content is top tier and how they havent asked for him to be in some sort of consultation role for MCU is just disappointing.
@@himynameisowenfacts, I’m convinced Rob could give Kevin Feige some great ways to progress the MCU in a great direction.
I always liked when Logan gave Rogue his healing, almost every would he’s had suddenly shows up and blood pours out of him. Cool effect.
"Do you know what happens to a toad when struck by lightning...?"
(drumroll...)
"Eh, just toast."
Saw this in the theaters in San Jose, California when I was 13. Still love the movie to this day even if it hasn't aged well in some respects. They really nailed the casting for the most part.
39:00 the crossover I never knew I needed 😅
The train station segment (both interiors and exteriors) was shot at Liuna Station in Hamilton, Ontario -- it's a banquet hall built out of a former train station. You can see one of its distinctive lanterns getting blasted by Cyclops at 30:16. It's a popular spot for filming: It's the same location used for the train station in 1996's The Long Kiss Goodnight.
I’ve loved comics my whole life but Rob from Comics Explained as well as Comicstorian really helped me fall in love with them love the shoutout you gave him.
Rob has an amazing energy these days. In the earlier days of his channel, it was bit more subdued. It’s good to see a comics fan who is still open to reading mainstream comics and not constantly bellyaching about issues that other people these days seem to have with them.
Wolverine did have bone claws though. There was an issue of X-Men where Magneto got pissed and ripped all the adamantium out of his body. It was revealed then that he had bone claws that had been metal plated, not installed "aftermarket".
I have it. Signed by Stan Lee. Love it
True but not everything from the comics makes it into the adaptations, so it's possible that the original intent for these films was to not have the bone claws. iirc the bone claws weren't a thing in X-Men TAS, for example
The thing about the opening scene between Xavier and Magneto is that in the shot composition they leave visual space for where the comic dialogue bubbles would go.
Well spotted!
12:39 aye ComicsExplained shout out 🔥🔥
I absolutely love when you guys shout out other channels I love. lol. It’s like watching an incursion happen that ends up with us loving both channels even more.
A lot of nostalgia here.
Before I was even into the MCU, but just before phase 3 peaked, my buddy got me into X-Men with these movies. The super hero theme got me into the MCU and I've always been able to separate the universes.. so hyped that they are going to be converging.
X-Men 2000 and X-2 are two of my favorite Marvel movies of all times.
Both of the Ashmore twins were in Smallville, one was Jimmy, and the other showed up a couple times in different seasons.
Only in cameo roles though
Both were also in Animorphs. In one cameo when another character has to morph Jake so there are two of them, both twins are present
Yep he played leach in smallville. By holding kryptonite and getting struck by electricity whilst near/touching Clark he steals Clark’s powers
I definitely support Easter eggs for older movies 👍🏻
The scene with the metal detector, none of the other X-Men set off the alarm because Xavier would have planned ahead for Magneto's abilities and not put metal pieces like zippers or snaps in their construction. It's just Logan's adamantium skeleton that triggers the alarm.
Nice!
I'm glad you mentioned that the snap, and the massive amount of cosmic radiation it generated, could be one of the explanations for the appearance of mutants in the MCU. When Rocket said those words in Endgame (that Earth was like the center of that radiation, don't remember the exact quote) my first thoughts were "that's gonna activate the mutant DNA". It would be an explanation that would make SENSE, without needing to rewrite anything.
Fun fact about one of the screenwriters, David Hayter. He was the main character in the live action Guyver, as well as being the voice for Solid Snake in most of the Metal Gear Solid games.
I hope this David guys gets some recognition for his small role in the MGS franchise
32:42, In this film’s defense, the X-Men are specifically a covert strike force, making their darker uniforms appropriate for missions requiring a degree of discretion. The more colorful and unique suits would have probably worked better later down the line when mutants were more public.
I think Last Stand was a perfect time for colorful costumes. Even Apocalypse reusing the First Class flight suits in some form
22:30 Sounds like we need a law that says if you are involved in certain legal prosecutions it voids all prior contracts
Innocent until proven guilty is a thing.
@@RRSmurf When I say prosecutions I mean convictions, yes of course it has to be proven
Whoa, catching the part where he is checking out Jean Grey and he catches that, is impressive
Magneto's mastery over his powers is insane
Days of future past has Magneto dare Charles to shoot him and he'd stop the bullet.
I think that scene was a little nod to the policeman scene here 👌🏼
Magneto can also manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum so he can kinda control electrical currents
Good on you guys for shouting out Rob! Comics explained is goated
39:14 when I make my move. The queen will take me 💀
You can desribe that movie in two words: Pure Nostalgia
*standing up and clapping* DAMMIT THIS IS WHAT WE NEED RIGHT NOW!! I'm a huge Marvel fan and I thought I caught all the Easter eggs in the movie, but you look at this on a whole different level! This was the best idea ever for y'all to go back and do the X-Men series. I cannot wait for the next video! 💜
Honestly i love it when we don't see origin stories. Origins are easy to make. But what has legs that lead a franchise is stories beyond "once upon a time". It leads to a universe and that's what i want to invest my time in watching. And watching Stewart and Mckellen is the way to hook me.
The fact that Ke Huy Quon also played Short Round made my eyes sweat 🥺. I’ve been a fan all this time and didn’t know it.
It's like everyone is suddenly rewatching the original movies and it's wonderful
Can't believe we're in Hugh Jackman official 24th year of playing wolverine. He is amazing 👏
Good timing. Just rewatched the original 3 x men movies over the last week showing my wife for the first time. They are better than I remember.
Stan Lee also played a member of the jury in the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno Hulk TV movie "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk"
I can’t hear or see David hayter without immediately just going “METALGEAR!”
I just reserved the first 3 because of this rewatch! ❤😂
I remember seeing this in the theaters as a kid . It was epic
I hope this means you're gonna watch the Rogue Cut again! I went thru all the Mutant movies in preparation for Deadpool so I'm excited to hear how you'll roast the CGI!
x men first class! is JUST A TEASE of the MANY deadpool abilities he has! I hope ryan really brings out the past movies in deadpool3!
@@eddiebrock6969ooooo my biggest hopes would be Jubilee, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus being significant somewhere. There's so much to address though it's okay if the main team gets assembled... or disassembled I guess
In regards to the screws on the claws, I think that was just a general mistake on the filmmakers part. Not that they symbolized the claws were added after the fact.
This movie would've been way more cooler if the X-men wore their comic-accurate suits, same goes for Magneto and his Brotherhood. Hopefully, they'll do em justice in Deadpool 3.
Rob Corps for life!
I remember watching x-men with my brother at a movie theater that is in town that isn't there anymore. It was just us, and we had the best time. It was one of a few times we had great times together. As we both watched x-men on Fox kids, almost religiously. So we were both hyped. And we loved it and couldn't stop talking about it. I always remember that time when I see this movie or clips of this movie. My brother isn't dead or anything, but he just turned into an asshole and we don't talk anymore. But this movie always reminds me of a better time growing up.
I've loved the x men films since they came out. So cool.
Isn’t Professor X and Juggernaut related?
I think it's also important to mention that Storm's "joke" was a call back to the cut out jokes that Toad would make, asking, "do you know what happens when a toad does or that this or that"
I love this X-Men rewatch you guys are doing I'm looking forward to more keep it up 👍
At 28:15 that's brian peck at the hotdogs stand what a monster
Can't wait my favorite X-Men break down.. The great Days of Future Past
David Hayter is also the voice of solid snake. Not in phantom pain though.
If we consider the age of the actress that is supposed to play Cassandra Nova, would that mean we are getting McAvoy, and not Stewart, as Xavier in DP3?
Also the aliens in Dark Phoenix (terrible movie, don't let Simon Kinberg near the MCU ever) were obviously not Shi'ar. :)
It would make more sense to use the more recent versions of the characters.
What makes less sense is how did xavier defeat his twin sister in the womb when in xmen 3 end credits Xaviers consciousness took over his comatose twin brothers body after making him brain dead in the womb.
Were they triplets or what? 😂
I really dug the Jubilation Lee of Generation X with Emma & even Lorna from Gifted as characters and costume designs at the time
I saw ray park at a convention once and someone asked him what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning. His answer was " apparently they dont get to come back for the sequel !"
It's always crazy to me thinking about Solid Snake writing X-Men.
So stoked for this rewatch!!
6:58 16:46 I hope we'll get more focus on characters like Cyclops, Storm, Shadowcat, Iceman, etc in the MCU.
Nice shout-out to Rob! Love his channel.
Sabretooth is so cool!
22:58 also maybe a reference to the story in The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.
Also noticed how Logan/Wolverine and Rouge treat each other Like Surrogate Siblings in these First Three X Men Films, with Logan/Wolverine acting like a Surrogate Older Brother and Rouge acting like the Surrogate Younger Sister.
The screws on the claws are simply just a prop error lol. The individual blades are mounted onto the grip that Jackman holds onto
Today I learned that Solid Snake had a part in this movie and I'm just so happy.
I like that the adamantium has a design.
I like to think Mystiques eyes can only be disguised if you look at them at a certain angle. Meaning you can see the yellow shimmer at an angle
Love the shoutout to my boy Rob @ComicsExplained
No one else is gonna mention how Solid Snake himself is one of the co-writers!?
Solid start with great casting and Jackman, Stewart And McKellen Are Perfect Castings. Hope Stewart's Xavier And McKellen's Magneto comes back for Deadpool 3.
That Mall Rats scene is somewhat connected to the MCU because Stan Lee was reading the script for that scene as a cameo in Captain Marvel.
(My old ass) Yea I remember when Logan called Xavier “Wheelz” and LOL’n about calling Prof. X “Wheelz” from BK
Speaking of mystiques yellow eyes. At the end of days of future past when they was pulling wolverine out the water striker ended up being mystique so did mystique put wolverine in the weapon x program. I'm sooooo confused!!!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to talk about Brian Singer. It was the first thing I thought of when you reminded us he directed this movie.
One question that I never understood, why did the cop with the magneto bullet, keep his head still, allowing the bullet to slowly drill into his head? Was he doing it willingly, out of fear because he was terrified of moving? Or, did he have some kind of metal on his head that magneto was controlling? I’ve seen this a million times, and I never really understood that moment. Like, I get all of the cops standing, frozen in fear, as magneto held their guns, that makes sense, but wouldn’t the cop with the bullet pushing into his forehead instinctively move to remove the pressure of the bullet?
probably because he knew the bullet would be faster no matter what. it would be through his head before he finished shifting his weight.
Nah, I genuinely think it was an oversight.... Should have just had him flinch and fall back with his head against a car or something.
Tbh, this kind of thing, and the lightning line just endear the film to me even more 😊
Xavier had stopped everyone from moving, if I remember correctly.
Just fear. Freezing like that is a pretty common reaction to such a threat.
Think how someone would react to a knife being held at their throat, or their face. Then imagine the knife is just hanging there, on its own.
The average person will freeze solid, like a deer in headlights - they won't be thinking about how to get out of the situation 'cos their mind will be too full of "WTF? I'm scared! WTF?! WTF?! I'm scared!!"
I love this! It’s been so long since I’ve seen the original X-men movies.
At 28:19 in the Stan Lee cameo that's Brian Peck from Nickelodeon😯
Pretty sure I remember Hugh Jackman saying that he’s the one that came up with the “hey bub” line/idea. It was in one of the dvd special features.
The comics were doing it first.
@@mackenziehunter4593 well yeah. I’m talking about the line in the movie.
