this guy is so wicked that I almost thought that this video was a joke or parody of the progressive metal drummer. wildest drumming I've seen in recent years!
Progrock Has only two Mikie's!!! Mike Portnoy & Mike Terrana!!!!!! Very tasteful music of course his performance is ********n amazing!!!! Thank you for posting this video.
I myself can't stand the stick twirling thing, but I understand that these guys work in "entertainment" as well as music, and to be successful have to impress people who know nothing about drums or music in general and are impressed by a twirling piece of wood. Ego-wise Mike is a genuine down to earth guy with an awesome sense of humor, so don't bag his character for doing what he does..
I do not understand why so many negative comments. I have never heard about this guy but watching this video I must say WOW - his drumming is amazing and perfect.
This guy is a showman. And this is great stuff, he keeps it together enough that it rocks, yes it is not technically so clean but it is unique and it's art, there is a lot of feel here.
Yikes! Time to dust off the ol chops! Thanks for posting, and thanks to Mr. Terrana for all the inspiration! I met him back in 94 and he was such a nice guy. Class act all the way.
What a monster. l saw him with Macalpine @ Club Kaos before it closed and what a gig to end it, in Fremont Ca, 1997 Incredible! I'm so jealous of Mike the Spike......
I saw/met him yesterday on a Meinl drum clinic. He's an great drummer, and a really funny one too. and he said he didin't like the shorts.. hahahaha! he's wearing them here too! "uncle" mike's the coolest metal drummer I've seen. The cymbals he used during the clinic were also sold for half the price..
MY god this is awesome!!!!! I can still remember him as the drummer for Beau Nasty. Just watched the video for "Shake It" a few minutes ago. I can see why he has the extensive resume:) A great showman too!!!
Mike good job you've worked very hard.. I'm a veteran player and am good but don't have the theory , schooling you do-- wow thanks again for all your hard work inspiring to watch..
I saw him live on festival Masters of Rock in Czech republic. He played nonstop with different bands. K2 + Axel Rudi Pell + Tarja + solo show. He made the world record. Very exciting performance!
@MRCJCOLLINS You are very lucky, my friend. Mike Terrana is one of my favorite drummer. I think Dream Theater already chose the drummer to fill Mke Portnoy. I hope is good. Merry Christmas!
Mike will be guessing for a drum clinic sponsored by Lyric music store here in Philippines on June 15, 2008 at Francisco Santiago Hall Makati Avenue, Makati City. Grrrr... Can't wait any longer!
this guy, practice 8 hours a day, several music styles, his double bass work is amazing, the same as Thomas Lang and Aquiles Priester, Mike Portnoy is all about alternating patterns between hands an feet and sixteen note patterns at a moderate speed but those guys really push the limits of double bass drumming.
How can this guy not practice rudiments!? It's just not possible to do this if you don't practice. I don't understand if i'm watching the same clip as the people leaving negative comments. You might not be into his particular style or the type of music but there's no denying that this guy can play! Do you guys even know what rudiments are?!!!!
yeah I know the feeling, I still doing my best to get a lil fancy. About fast I recomend you "Ascelerate your Drumming" DVD tutorial..as for pedals, sometimes is better a waaaay tight adjustment, so the bouce back is quick + hit with the toe in the midle of the board. Start slow and increase gradually..then go down & so on. Less than a month you got it man!
This fellow definitely has his own voice. I am sitting here, though, asking myself why I like Steve Gadd better. Is it because I'm allowed to breathe? When I listened to Master Plan by Dave Weckl, I got the same feeling. I must be getting old, because it seems that I've learned over decades that facility shouldn't hide music. Am I correct in my assumption? Wondering out loud, needing some dialogue on this, I guess. : )
HI BILLY, i saw youre videos , and i want to ask what method do you recommend for polyrithm, odd time and all taht stuff, ihope you can help me, thank you !
premier isnt bad dude, a lot of good drummers use them, and meinl is amazing, you're baked out of your mind if you think they're bad. and he has his own signature sticks from vic firth.
thanks. I'll try that. as for the spike heads, if u don't find them at any drum store or any drum web site, look on e-bay. they have everything. if that doesn't work, then i'm sorry. best i can say
Hi there guitar gare., I'm agree with you. Obviously his chops are amazing but, not a lot amount of real musicality in his playing.. spaces are as important as the notes and this guy plays 300 notes per a bar. It's more like watching a circus act or something & no taking it away from his skills but he should watch people like Cobham, Gadd, and Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree who is a very tasty player. Cheers from Downunder! Bob.
Billy Canty- just checked your vids out. Very good. You'd like european mantra I think. Have a look for them and check out Gergo Borlai. He's a monster drummer. You obviously do have a firm grasp on your rudiments!! I think you should be a little kinder though!!!!
It's the only guy I can see in place in Portnoy's Dream Theater! He is charismatic and very reminiscent of the Portnoy! Guys! If you can not really go back to Portnoy, put another MIKE! Terrana is very good!
demasiado bueno este terrana para estar perdiendo su tiempo en la banda de la sra. turunen..aunq siempre ha sido medio mercenario pero eso no le quita que sea uno de los mas grandes bateristas de estos tiempos
haha what a great idea i never thought to use my wrestling shoes while playing theyre cheaper than drum shoes but they provide awesome grip ima start useing mine
@nevDRUM125 I've met Mike Terrana twice (a classmate is a friend of his), and he is a real nice guy. I wouldn't say he has a big ego, he was telling me how he thinks his kick drumming isn't very good.
I used to play the drums, I watched this video like 10 years ago, it's 2021 and I still love it, awesome.
this guy is so wicked that I almost thought that this video was a joke or parody of the progressive metal drummer. wildest drumming I've seen in recent years!

Mike once said: " I sometimes practise for 7 - 8 hours a day". Looking at this, I believe him.
That's generally what you must do to play like that..
Definitely the beast , love this guy , he's giving it everything ! Sounds great !
I saw/met him yesterday on a Meinl drum clinic. He's an great drummer, and a really funny one too. and he said he didin't like the shorts.. hahahaha! he's wearing them here too! I don't have a words!!!Fantastic!!!Mike is best!
I am speachless.... this is amazing.
MY god this is awesome!!!!! I can still remember him as the drummer for Beau Nasty. Just watched the video for "Shake It" a few minutes ago. I can see why he has the extensive resume:) A great showman too!!!
i love the sound of the bass drums
Mike good job you've worked very hard.. I'm a veteran player and am good but don't have the theory , schooling you do-- wow thanks again for all your hard work inspiring to watch..
Terrana is the best metal drummer i ever see playing...
the name Detonator is perfect for this video.
Back to this videos a decade later. Still amazing.
I saw him live on festival Masters of Rock in Czech republic. He played nonstop with different bands. K2 + Axel Rudi Pell + Tarja + solo show. He made the world record. Very exciting performance!
I thank you for the info, it's not a brand I have heard of before, but thanks for your time.

Mike Terrana loves Terry Bozzio - tho agrees?:D
people please!!.. don´t mention other drummers so often here... this is about mike terrana!
This guys drumset is dangerous looking. I love those stick tricks though, just brilliant
non vedo l'ora di vedere il dvd beast!!!!
Only seen a couple of his other performances, but this on is really good!
this guy, practice 8 hours a day, several music styles, his double bass work is amazing, the same as Thomas Lang and Aquiles Priester, Mike Portnoy is all about alternating patterns between hands an feet and sixteen note patterns at a moderate speed but those guys really push the limits of double bass drumming.
wow he can play fast. what a stunning achievement! and he can do funny tricks with his sticks. omg! amazing!
How can this guy not practice rudiments!?

This fellow definitely has his own voice.

i saw him play this at the namm show! freaking amazing!
Hey Mike, You forgot the snail slide at the end, your friend The Troll in Batavia
what drum heads is he using in this video on the bass drums? i refer to the batter bass drum heads, those white drumheads.
answer my question please
Where can I find the cymbal spikes...Im looking everywhere for that with no luck.
Thanks!!
un verdadero señor batero!!!! this is drums man
My very first double bass monster drummer! A+++++++++
yes they are Trick, u can see it were you adjust the "spring" tension
the best drummer of the whole world!!!
What peadls was he using. I think they were Axis but iam not sure. Could any one tell me.
He's the best!!! As a drummer and as a person
I love how he spins the stick in the chorus section.
maan that groove on 0:13-0:35 is the best!
premier isnt bad dude, a lot of good drummers use them, and meinl is amazing, you're baked out of your mind if you think they're bad.

Maybe, but theres a reason Mike Terrana is one of the main metal session drummers :P
Billy Canty- just checked your vids out. Very good. You'd like european mantra I think. Have a look for them and check out Gergo Borlai. He's a monster drummer. You obviously do have a firm grasp on your rudiments!! I think you should be a little kinder though!!!!
AMAZING! He had be at the first gratuitous stick twirl. Actually, he had me at the nickname "Rhythm Beast."
is this guys double bass supposed to be uneven? someone please tell me.
@- SURE ask him...also if you can let me know his nick name on ebay. By the way, how long are the spikes?
is he using trick pro pedals?
@MrJ0k3rZ
Absolutely OK with it. One can not judge at this level, anyway... unless you're at this level, precisely.
It's the only guy I can see in place in Portnoy's Dream Theater! He is charismatic and very reminiscent of the Portnoy!
Guys! If you can not really go back to Portnoy, put another MIKE! Terrana is very good!
this is very great drum solo
it's no problem if he adds tricks to his playin', as you said, he adds those and still sounds and does great.
demasiado bueno este terrana para estar perdiendo su tiempo en la banda de la sra. turunen..aunq siempre ha sido medio mercenario pero eso no le quita que sea uno de los mas grandes bateristas de estos tiempos
haha what a great idea
i never thought to use my wrestling shoes while playing
theyre cheaper than drum shoes but they provide awesome grip

I second that.
But I also don't think his style isn't very complicated. I think he likes playing simple things. He's always really into his drumming.
very unique style, that's for sure!
@XxSharkBatexX Great drummer, great play style, end of discussion.

@nevDRUM125
I've met Mike Terrana twice (a classmate is a friend of his), and he is a real nice guy. I wouldn't say he has a big ego, he was telling me how he thinks his kick drumming isn't very good.
