You don’t have to be so annoyed about it, though. Many Dutch speakers are happy to switch to English to accommodate those of us who find Dutch a bit difficult still. By habit, my Dutch colleagues would speak to each other in Dutch even when I am around. I just zone out at the point when I can’t follow anymore. They also don’t mind if I reply in English when they speak to me in Dutch.

I would say regarding the language thing. I know lots of people here in Amsterdam that refuse to speak English anymore. I see the following three reasons:
    1. One reason i see a lot is because all the stores started hiring English speaking workers. To the point that it is rare to see a Dutch speaking employee at all. i Think the locals are annoyed by that a lot.
    2. There is also a recent (last 5/8 years) change in how tourists are seen. They are not liked very much anymore. This happend because almost half of the people in the city would be tourists. And the city, especially the inner parts, are not livable anymore.
    3. There is a growing nationalistic view here. This is mainly because of the housing crisis and migrants. But it is also a longer/larger (even global) trend of moving away from multiculturalism and globalism.

Please don't kill spiders. They are incredibly useful critters! They get rid of the _really_ annoying insect like mosquitos, fleas, silverfish, bed bugs, etc. Most spiders in your house (like the common house spider) hide and only come out at night. And they are scared of people so most of the time won't come anywhere near you. The long legged spiders are very useful too. They stay in the same place and only wander in small areas so most of the time you know where they are. If they do scare you, just catch them and put them outside. They will find a way back into your home again but at least it gives you some peace of mind.

@@AnOnymous-go7kn yeah. In my home I have manually moved a really nice looking spider to next to my window/recycle bins to catch fruit flies and mosquitoes.
He has a nice web, very pretty spider to look at, does not get scared of me and just sits in his web in the sun catching the bugs I don't want in my house.
At my birthday I especially put up a note next to him:
Don't kill the spider. He is my friend and eats the annoying fruit flies and mosquitoes 😉

Promotions at Kruidvat, Etos or Albert Heijn, for example, are more 'feel-good promotions'. You don't actually get a second product 'free', for example. You're essentially paying too much for a branded product every time you buy it. In other words: you buy 1 and pay for 5. Then you supposedly get 1 or 2 'free'. A bottle of shower gel costs the manufacturer only 40 cents in contents and packaging, but it is sold for 8 or 9 times the price. Don't fall for that. If you want to save money, choose the house brand. If you want to stick with your favorite brand because you are very satisfied with it, you can consider ordering it in bulk via the internet. Then you pay a lower amount per piece than in the supermarket.

When I was in the US, people were amazed about my English vocabulary and asked if I spoke more languages besides English, so I told them I spoke German, French, Spanish and Norwegian on A1 level beside English and Dutch. They where amazed. But I truly think that not learning Spanish at a young age (like we Dutch learn English at the age of 7 or 8) is a shortcoming in the US, which is a bilingual nation. As soon as you learn the differences and grammar of other languages, it becomes more easy to learn more (especially when you understand the difference between Latin based and Anglo-Saxon based languages)

Albert Heijn sells zaanlander, maaslander, beemster, oud amsterdam and their own brand all with the different ages. They all have their unique taste. It may be a fun idea to get a selection from a good cheese monger and do a taste test.

You should try overjarige Goudse. 3 years.

The cheese thing is interesting. I think because cheese is such a staple food here, there's not much variation in the cheese most people eat on a day to day basis. Most people want the same thing for breakfast most days. When that's a cheese sandwich, it's gotta be a basic, reliable cheese. Once in a while you'll want to have a special cheese meal, and then you go to a cheese shop. Like how in France, where bread is a staple food for many meals, there's not much variation in the bread you get at the average grocery store.
Oh and for a tosti, make a mix of grated aged and young cheese for the combination of the perfect melty fattiness and the best flavor.

Michelle is on point with her hypothesis about it, we are a nation of (finding) discounts. Hence big prices but often a good discount. German drugstores seldom have discounts but just low prices all the time. Thus you can find products decent prices if you buy in bulk over here, but if you need something right now, you really need to pony up.

This was seriously a fun vlog Alex and Michelle. And yes, drugstore products are extremely expensive here. Apart from a slightly higher VAT, this also has to do with the fact that not so many people live here and the negotiating position with manufacturers is weaker. In Germany, because of the 80 million inhabitants (instead of 18 million here), they can also purchase a much larger volume. And shopkeepers here often rent a building and the rent here is also huge due to lack of real estate. If you need a word for Michelle, here's one: "langdradig." That's kind of how this vlog started.

You should go to a DM store in Germany and compare prices with Etos and Kruidvat, its totally ridiculous !
Often Dutch stores are 2 to 4 times more expensive. Thats not a "VAT" issue by the way, dutch vat is 21%, German 19%, so that cant be the difference.
Example: Deodorant Netherlands 3-4 euro, Germany (DM) 0,75euro. DMs brand Balea are really good products by the way.

I do not agree with the statement that the supermarkets have similar cheeses to cheese shops. Jonge kaas is very boring in the supermarkets. In a cheese shop jonge kaas can have flavors closer to an older cheese. oude kaas (my favorite) is really dry and far las flavourful then the oude kaas in the cheese shops. Supermarket oude kaas is closer to a really old and dry belegen kaas. You know that you have a good oude kaas when you can smell it trough the package. It should be smooth not dry.

In the Netherlands cheese names are actually protected by law:
    Jonge kaas: 4 weken
Jong belegen: 8 tot 10 weken
    Belegen: 16 tot 18 weken
Extra belegen: 7 tot 8 maanden
Oude kaas: 10 tot 12 maanden
Overjarige kaas: 18 maanden of meer
Overjarige kaas you will never find in the supermarket: when cheese ages it becomes more expensive:
    1) the time to store it and turn it every so often. Time/storage room/taking care of it = money
    2) moisture evaporates, so flavor becomes more intense, but your cheese becomes lighter. So with age not only the storage time costs money, but the cheese will weight less and less each month. So price per kilo goes up exponentially
Overjarige kaas is too expensive for a supermarket and also, got so much moisture extracted that you can't slice/cut it. It will only crumble and you got special knives for it to handle that the best way
    Love your channel ❤

What is more important to know about language is that people with dementia fall back to the language they learned as a child.
They lose their second language. I worked in a nursing home where a woman got dementia and only remembered how to speak German. So for that I'm grateful that we learn different languages at school so at least we know what they try to say and not get completed isolated from everyone because no one can communicate with them.

Dordrecht is a city since 1220, one of the oldest in Holland. There is another city Geertruidenberg which used to be in the County of Holland, but since the French occupation became part of the province of Noord-Brabant, that has earlier city rights 1213.

Cheese you heat at anyway is an art. Like a tostie you like old cheese you need to mix your cheese.
Get an grated mozzarella young gouda mix and put the old cheese on that. You want some ham on it or sause put that on top and put some of the mozzarella mix on top of that. This way you get the melt in the bread and you get the old cheese also. Many different ways to do this, but this is my way.

20:07 : "most of the time it's going to be Gouda cheese". And there you are completely mistaken.
Most Dutch cheeses come in age categories. But the regional differences will be huge.
Gouda cheese is from Gouda, so Zuid-Holland. It tastes quite different compared to cheese from Noord-Holland, like Beemster.
The differences with farm cheese are even more pronounced. Very much depending on the soil and vegetation the cows have access to.
The main issue is that pre-packing cheese kills it. Cheese needs to breathe.
So packed cheese from the supermarket tends to taste more similar despite its difference in origin.
Same goes for packed bread. Both are substandard.
To be truly able to judge you need to buy cheese from a cheese shop, or better still from a market stall or 'zelfkazende boer'.
And remember to ask about its origin.
And foremost buy your bread from a 'warme bakker'.

Interesting video. I mean podcast. Also, I also always buy jong belegen. The housebrand one from Plus is the best I think. If you go to de kaasboer there is way more distinction between the different types btw. In supermarkets the type is also a bit relevant, but if bought quick like that the age is more important because the quality of taste between the types is less noticeable.
Edit: Cheese in NL is a thing for a reason and if you go outside the supermarkets there is a world of tastes and types to explore and enjoy.

Do an episode on all the different types of Gouda cheese in the Netherlands. For example Farmer’s cheese extra Belegen does not taste the same as the regular extra Belegen. There are so many other types of Gouda cheese.

Netherlands have a discount culture with healthcare and beauty products, discounts go as far as 3 for price of 1 or 70% off.
So if you buy out side of the discount window you get screwed over, it's to get maximum profit from people with little time.
50% off is the real price of many products.

My opinion on the product prices, like import stuff is of course first of all the tax, its always been extremely high here so makes it more expensive, but also and this is my reasoning/opinion we are a country of only 17,5/18 mill people compared to france 68 mill and germany 84 mill so when shops there buy in bulk from say Maybelline they get it for cheaper cause they have to buy more and distribute that all over the country in the shops, when our shops buy that stuff they can buy it in large quantities but probably wont sell as much as the Germans or french, so more unlikely that they buy it in as large quantities as German/french shops do, but for an import/export country this are getting out of hand here for sure, that's why i love our German neighbours 😂.
