There are a number of misunderstandings because the idea that you can just speak English is nice, but most Dutch people actually appreciate it more if you also live and work or study here that you can speak Dutch or at least make yourself understood in Dutch and we are happy to help you with that. I also saw that it was about Carnival and that is celebrated with a different meaning than how it is celebrated in the Caribbean. And the food here is very varied from very simple to high-end. cuisine and then you also have quite a lot of variation, which is due to the many cultures that have settled here and you also have things that are a combination of several cultures together, so there is something for everyone.
2:18 Afrikaans is not old Dutch, they both evolved from 17th ceintury Dutch. They kept different features, the standards originate from different dialects and they were under different influences. We have way fewer loanwords from African languages, while we have been ocupied by France and Germany since Afrikaans and Dutch split.
I hardly ever have a hard time understanding English, but those Irish girls… Although, admittedly, it’s not just the accent, also the audio quality in that segment.
I watch several American and other channels, some expats, who talk about the differences between the Netherlands and/or other European countries. One of the best among them is More Jps. An intelligent young man who is really interested, openminded, wants/tries to understand and lean more about different ppl, their country, culture etc and does proper research. And on top of that he is always very polite and respectful. Great guy.
As a Dutch person myself i am getting really sick and tired of hearing about the "Tikkie" all of the time, when it comes to the supposed Dutch way of paying the (bar/restaurant etc.) bills. Because it is just NOT the common way to pay in the Netherlands. Most Dutch people will just split the bill, and everybody pays the same amount, no matter what they got/ordered. That dumb "Tikkie" is just (mostly) used by young students, who don't have a lot to spend on their own, because of not having a (good) job jet. So they just cannot afford to pay for other people (yet) but still wanting to have a good time. In all of my life i have never ever even have got one single Tikkie" from another person, friends or family. Not once. So please stop talking about that stupid phenomenon as being the norm in the Netherlands. It is just NOT !!
I dont agree with SA girl regarding the language... It is a bittersweet common sense to try to learn the language in the country your living at imo.... in big cities like Amsterdam, I can see this as possible but outside the big cities some locals cannot entertain you well enough in English my dear.
Is exemption... 99% Dutch does understand English.. Some regions just don't like to talk in it (Shamed for being bad at it) It never hurts to learn it as you live here, but it is not a necessity to get around..
@@ACR_BOX if you live here, u might start learning it and I stand by that.. many things will not give u an exception just because u can only speak English.. my friends had moments where there is a language barrier because Dutch people can certainly communicate with the basics, complex English are not for everyone here… The government doesn’t send English written papers and trust me translate apps always miss one and more specific thing to translate
Even though we speak English, it is a 2nd language, and frankly its just annoying having to speak English all the time in our own country. To help you when you are new here, of course we'll speak English. But many expats seems to be taking advantage of that willingness to help and thats not ok. Its a matter if respect too: if you make the choice to come live in our society, you should have the decency to learn our language. I cant even imagine having such an entitled and arrogant attitude to move somewhere and then demand that everyone speaks another language for me. But in the end its our fault, we move our language aside way to easily, being welcoming and friendly to foreigners doesnt mean we have to let them walk all over us.
Smoking weed is NOT legal in the Netherlands, it is just tolerated by the Government. And believe me if i say that 99% of the Dutch people will NOT take it well when you would smoke your joint in front of them. Specially outside of Amsterdam (and some other big cities). So please don't be an ignorant foreigner and just don't do it. Period !
@@BP-iz2lt You are dead wrong about that buddy. You clearly don't know the meaning of 'gedogen' And EU law? Try to smoke weed in countries like Spain or France, and see what happens. I dare you !!
@@vadechronicles I know what you mean but here you need to go to specific places to have fun. In Spain the cities are alive... even in a simple coffee shop. That's what she means.
It's bs I have been there many times in the past, you just have to know where to go. And the Spanish girl lived in a major tourist destination. Thats why it's a continuous party time, the bars and clubs are open every day. Been there myself as well many years ago. Most of these ppl seems to be either tourists or students who don't know the plae and culture as well as the locals. And indeed the Dutch (Europeans) younger generations almost all speak English very well. But if you intend to live in their country for a long time they really don't appreciate it when you don't learn their language !
It's almost all bs answers because they don't the city, norunderstand the Dutch/Europeans ppl. That girl said there's only 1 cub. The lady from South-Africa said there are almost no (weekly open) party clubs in the Netherlands. Say what???!! That is just absurd to say, and absolutely wrong. There are plenty of places to go in (most of) the big(ger) cities. Keep looking lady !
