    Good to see someone talking about regular everyday camping! The constant focus on survival gets old after a while.

      +Jacob Perkins Tell me about it. As well as the expectation that TH-camrs are somehow supposed to self fund trips to Africa because that's what people expect from reality TV. They want to play pretend.

      @@preparedmind101 , Totally agree, people selling those type of ideas, influencing people the wrong way should be called out, that's dangerous and irresponsible, and gullible people die every day because of those false narrated videos....

    A rake is super useful when hunting. You can clear leaves from a small path so you make no rustling noise when you walk to your tree stand in the morning.

    Really liked that you differentiated between Survival and car camping. Had more than a few discussions with people who still think they're Les Stroud even though they can see their cars from their campsite. I have nothing against car camping, no one said you have to knock yourself out every time you go into the wilderness but you cannot backpack far with much of the gear you use for car camping. It would be great if these ''car park Les Strouds'' would get honest with themselves before they recommend gear and give out advice. Thanks for the vid!!

    • @preparedmind101

    Thanks, but nope on the Lowe's rake. I'll wait for Cold Steel to come out with their TriAd locking Spetznaz SF Tiger ClawZ survival-assault rake in razor-sharp cryo'd Aus8A. Can't wait for the Cold Steel boys to put it through the paces in one of their promo videos. I want to see 15 or 20 of them all lined up to take turns shredding a whole pig carcass into raw pulled pork. Hi-yaaa!!

    • @tikkidaddy

      And then you carry and use the vintage Cold steel on a regular basis and find out how much of an idiot people can be. Example: SRK, Trailmaster or Ghurkha Khukuri.., the Riflemans Hawk...on and on. All in high carbon steel.
      I love these numbskulls who criticize CS for over advertising and flash and then carry a Zero Tolerance with a number for a name...TEHO...JMHO...YMMV.

    in regards to "tool" (Jes.-x),
    my "go to" is a brush ax from Walmart lawn and garden, made by FISKERS.
    And, at $22-, I'd say that it would be considered "budget item" for the $$$.
    (as well as, almost classifies as a "best kept secret")

    Great idea for a rake. I use one with the camper but didnt think of it for just roughing it. I always take a axe if I'm staying a few days and really like the schrade "L" hatchet. I'm still lovin my BK9 for wood processing but trying to convince myself to get the 42. The corona is fantastic, so easy.... I enjoy your ideas, keep em commin!!!

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Danforth You mean the 43? It'll murder the 9 for wood processing. 9 is still ones of my favorite large combat knives.

    • @johndanforth5382
      @johndanforth5382 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Yes the 43, thats what happens when fat fingers tries to type!
      What about the medium size project that the BK9 seems to handle quite
      well?

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You gotta remember, The BK9 was my big knife pic. But I wanted to make something with about the same size blade but specifically chop and split wood like a demon. In order to do that I have to invent a new handle concept and remove everything "combat". So In the end, it was something completely different. But I love that blade size (Height/Weight). I think I might even come back to it later in a new way.
      Other TH-camrs have done extensive testing. One of the best I've seen is the Preppers Bunker Outdoors Jess-X vs Becker videos.
      That isn't taking anything away from the BK9. People need to remember it was designed to be a large COMBAT knife. And in that regard, I think it's awesome. Jess-X looks crazy, but once you get it in your hand it all makes sense. Over 2000 users out there and most swear by it (of course, not all. No knife is universally loved). People are comfortable with different tools though. No one way is "Right".

    I just bought the Carona 7inch for only $13 on Amazon not sure how long that will last but I'm so freaking happy with it. I don't know why I haven't had a good folding saw all these years but I will never leave home without one ever again. If you use them with common sense and let the blade do the work it makes camping and bushcrafting so much easier. I used to use a hatchet for camp wood never again ....saw and big chopper with belt knife is my style.

    As soon as I saw the heading, I knew I wouldn't be able to stop the ol' brainbox igniting the afterburner! However, as you did, I chose to adapt the "rules" somewhat, in that I decided to rather choose 7 categories of tools:
    1. Primary tool is the knife, and I have a philosophy about knives - the right one for the particular job. I don't do the "one knife only" stuff either. These are amongst what I would pack;
    1.1 Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III (because I have one! For the big jobs (and to replace the machete, which is single use, and overrated).
    1.2 " SRK " . Belt knife, default carry most times.
    1.3 " Master hunter " . Most hunting, food prep and sundry cutting jobs around camp. Might carry in place of SRK (eg on a shoot).
    1.4 ESEE Izula II For the little fiddly jobs, carving, etc.
    1.5 Folders/multi-tools. Victorinox Ranger Grip 78 (loose), SAK Swiss Champ (belt), Leatherman Wave+ (belt).
    2. Saw: Second most important tool as it deals with quite heavy work that other tools are not good at - severing wood across the grain.
    2.1 Silky Gomboy 240 ( for the heavy cutting, eg bigger logs).
    2.2 Silky Pocketboy, for those smaller jobs, and when out on excursions away from base camp.
    3. Axe: Not a great fan, but around camp an axe comes in handy, eg at the wood pile! Estwing campers axe.
    4. Drill: Around camp there is always a need to have a hole in something, so I'd include a drill brace, and bit set.
    5. Wedges: If there is a need to sometimes split large rounds that the axe is unlikely to achieve, I'd include 2 x aluminium splitting wedges.
    6. Spade: A good solid camp shovel is necessary in any camp, as there are many reasons to make holes in the ground. Cold Steel SF shovel.
    7. Pot: Although this may be viewed by some to be a utensil, I have included it here. Metal boiling pot (kettle, if you wish), and a length of chain (preferably mattress chain, as it is so dirt cheap! This provides that primary life preserving commodity which is so essential - TEA!
    There is some overlap to your list, but I've added some of my own.
    Feel free to comment, and I'm hoping you won't be too offended at my taking so freely with your list!
    Cheers mate!

    I'm going to disagree with something Chris said about his 1st item: The Cold Steel Sp. Forces Shovel is DEFINITELY a backpacking item if you're going for more than a day or so. When I was young we'd go on a week long hike of at least 50 miles. I didn't have this shovel then, but I had the equivalent, a steel Boy Scout shovel with a rectangular head. We trenched out tents, dug latrines, even chopped some firewood occasionally. I wouldn't think of going out without my shovel. Boy Scout back then, Cold Steel today. I'll probably get a kydex sheath for it to sit in my truck, but I'll use the lightweight nylon one on backpacking trips.

  • @BCJerbs
    @BCJerbs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd be interested in see how much one of those kydex sheaths for the cold steel shovel? I have one as well and would like to have a chat with your guy but didn't see a link in the description...any who great line up for camp tools to think on! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and thoughts with us my friend! Stay safe and blessed! Watching from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island in Canada! Tramontina does make good machetes, but if you're an abusive forgetful lout like myself Cold Steel machetes with their molded-on handles are a better choice. I misplaced one in the undergrowth of my yard for like a couple of years- found it and except for a little rust it was good to go....wooden handles wouldn't have fared so well. And Cold Steel machetes are VERY budget-friendly.

    This may be the best video you have ever done, down to earth, realistic and address real world issues of going out in the wild. Too may people want to Rambo and Chief Red Cloud......to even get close to what it is like to go out in the wild for a few days. In fact, most focus on being UN-PREPARED, while these are fun to watch, these are not about living and surviving. Good to see a video that is based in REALITY !

    It's nice to see a casual camper video instead of Rambo V2.0. I can appreciate why you say these tools work well for you and I could see taking a similar set if I was driving in instead of hiking. I would have suggested a roll of duct tape before that rake though, even if I knew my car would be parked 20 feet from my shelter but like you said, you have a spot where you can leave it behind so that would justify it I suppose if I frequented that location a lot. IDK why duct tape is so often overlooked as a top budget tool. Maybe it's just a given with experienced campers, like your comment about knives, but I'd guess these budget videos get a lot of attention from novice and new campers that may not know how useful tape can be. Might be something to consider if you ever make a revised budget tool video. Thanks.

    Kind of tired of the complaining. These are suggestions and quite frankly, the rake was a perfect suggestion for our popup camper. Already have the tramontina and a similar saw. Thank you. I love camping! But sadly I'm not in to survivalist's but have to watch them just for information for camping and gear. Let's face it most of the people out there making survivalist vids would not last a month in the wild but give really bad advice to people that trust them. It's only a matter of time before someone dies from that bad advice and the you tubeer's are held accountable. One you tubeer's gives bad advice and be for you know it many vids are popping up with the very same bad advice.

    For starters I like to say I enjoy your videos. You convinced me to buy a worksharp and I love it. Love the topic of this video for the simple reason 99.9 percent of the people buying outdoor gear will never have to use it in a life or death situation. They will use it while simply enjoying a trip into the outdoors and all that is needed for that are budget tools. Now is it better to carry a large knife instead of an axe? No way. A large knife may be a little easier to carry than a small axe but an axe can do, for the most part, anything the large knife can do and do it using much less energy. A bush craft knife will take care of any short comings the axe has. As for most of the modern style axes they're junk. I don't know anything about the Schrade, it may be a great axe, I've never tried one. May do so. But most are usually made of to hard a steel and can be bad about chipping and also there's no real way of replacing a broken handle in one. Just my two cent.

    I love me a good rake, I've spent a lot of time cutting fire line, but for car camping I don't think I would ever bother carrying that bit of specialised kit. Grabbing a couple dead branches or a fistful of sticks to flick away the leaf litter is just as easy as digging out another bit of kit.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Everyday Adventure I don't "carry" it either, not did I say you should. It stays at camp or goes out if setting up or cleaning up a campsite.

    • @eachday9538
      @eachday9538 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I meant carrying it in my vehicle, the utility vs real estate/clutter equation doesn't add up for me... but then I do drive a tiny clown car. I didn't feel like you were pushing your opinion on anyone too hard, I just have a different take on it and thought it was worth mentioning an alternative. I need to start putting a smiley face after everything I type. :-)

      Ah, I see what you mean. It'd also probably make a lot of sense in a big camper rig that is kitted out with everything. That collapsible rake would slot nicely into a tube carrier.

      I've taken to travelling with a posse, like Snoop. Raking the camp is my homie Wiggy G's job. I highly suggest a posse. Great for filling the stage when I win best new rap album at the AMAs and need to accept my award, too

    So I like you videos and most of the info is great but the Schrader axes biggest con is if it breaks you can't make a handle. Now that's probably not a big concern if your just camping and not bugging out or whatever but it's still something to consider.

    There is a tool superior than the jessica x, the legendary nepalese kukri, the best chopping knife, the blade divides in three sections that allow to do several tasks, and even the original nepalese iron have a very cool feature, where a rare isotope "propirium" reaches very high temperatures with friction, so you can make a fire rubbing birchbarck in the blade, its a very well designed knife, with a well distributed weight and a very nice grip, made for warefare and to daily use in the farms and a long heritage.

    You are definitely not an axe man, it was scary watching you use one. If you would like to see how axes are used properly watch skillcult 101, he knows his stuff. You know your knives for sure but I think your missing out on the uses of an axe or hatchet.
