    Here's an idea for your comparison, Chris. Set up a Grabber, the 2Go and a mylar emergency blanket in the same configuration in a circle around the campfire. Place a thermometer in each and see which is warmer.

    At 6’-3” and 240lbs the trifecta is really nice to use. Plenty of room, and Ive used it on a test outing overnight in cold and windy weather lakeside. It did its job, was impressed enough that all 4 of our go bags have one

    Okay, so I just received my Trifecta. I'm very, very impressed and had been looking at different Bivvy sacks for several weeks. I watched your video and ordered the Trifecta based on your feedback and really like this piece of equipment. I'm a section hiker and my requirements were: 1). Must be large enough so I don't feel restricted; 2). must have a full length zipper so I can easily get in/out of the Bivvy; 3). The Bivvy must add thermal warmth; 4). The Bivvy must be water resistant and if possible, waterproof; 5). It must vent; 6). The Bivvy must be "somewhat" lightweight; 7). Must be big enough to accept a winter pad inside of the Bivvy as well as a 0F quilt. As a backpacker, weight is always an issue and nothing gets taken if it doesn't have a purpose. The Trifecta is heavier than I like but I'm willing to accept the additional weight for the value/function it provides. I'm also going to use the Bivvy as a tarp over one of my tents when needed and to extend another tent's vestibule. This is a great piece of gear. Thanks for the videos and keep 'em coming.

    I really like the 2go systems blanket bivy I bought. Well worth the money. Haven't had a chance to use it in the cold weather yet. I actually used it as a ground cloth under my taranova tarp 2. It held up really well. It is a standard piece in my EDC pack now.

    Super review, Chris and Will! I just placed an order from Amazon for one and although pricey($67) I think it is worth every penny and more. I used the SOL Escape Bivvy (OD green) in Shenandoah NP this past weekend and it precluded my going into hypothermia; and I was under a wool blanket, a woobie attached to my military poncho with the orange/reflective under me! After crawling into the bivvy I slept like a baby the rest of the night. I want to try your 10lb challenge using these two incredible pieces of gear.

  • @couchcamperTM
    @couchcamperTM 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    AMK SOL made some big mistakes, a) to make the Escape Bivi way too small for normal guys b) not listen to the would be customers who wanted one in a size that fits normal guys for YEARS c) selling the green version for more than the orange one d) making it almost impossible to buy here in Europe. Anyways, I am small, I was able to get one.
    Now there's one little guy, starts his business, comes up with all the solutions plus making it a multiuse item. Kudos to him, he did everything right! The Trifecta is, what the Escape bivi could have become if AMK would actually listen to me and the countless other guys ;)
    only one issue remains: availability outside the US. :D

    Very much considered doing this with loops on a cheap Harber Freight tarp. Just like you said, put into a survival hunting pack. Looks like a very useful item to have in a car or in a pack, never know when things go awry. Like the size too.

    Hi Chris, If you needed to keep warm and you had a "BedRug" (bedd liner) in the back of your pick up along with a carpeted topper, it appears that would be an excellent emergency prepairdness item.

    I love 2go systems. I got their poncho and at the time was in real bad health and was messing with my copd so i called them to see if the fit was as cut and it was like i said i later figured it was my copd not the poncho but he still offered to fix it for me and all that just cuz. I love Integrity and its such a hard quality to find in a person much less a business! Not to mention its a great poncho and highly recommend it. His shovel (not to be chopped with fully extended) seems to be the bees knees as well. I really think that coat thing is a good idea. i might even throw some eyelets in one of my harbor freight cheapo wool blankets. peace.

    tape together a couple of heavy duty 55 gallon drum liners and use them to "envelope' the bivy. Then the Trifecta will let you sleep ok at 40F degrees, in a net hammock. This is in just cammies, balaclava, unlaced shoes, gloves, shemagh, and 3 pairs of sock liners. Add a couple of Amazon 1/2 lb "cut-leaf" type of camo nets, twisted so tha they cannot 'lay flat". Wrap the nets around your limbs, between a pair of Amazon's full-body bugnet "suits". and wear the assembly as long johns. Then you can sleep ok at 34F, in wind and rain. Get the XL size, not the regular size and cut off the rain flaps from the zippers. They WILL jam with you inside of the bivy. fold over the bottom corners of the bivy and the envelope and tape them into place. This saves some heat-loss from your legs.

    Informative and entertaing as always.
    How does the 2GO Systems compare to the UST Base Tube Tarp 1.0? I see the similarities to the Grabber, but with the zipper, D-rings instead of grommets, and non-textured reflective side, it seems to me that it is also similar to the Base Tube Tarp

  • @likota123
    @likota123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Jerven bag is similar. I have the Hunter version and it has all the features that the Trifecta has plus primaloft insulation, a rescue flag and detachable sleeves. Its is quite expensive though.

    • @couchcamperTM
      @couchcamperTM 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      not all the features, no. the number one, outstanding and most important feature is breathability. big difference! the famous jerven is just like a pimped grabber space blanket in comparison. plus, as you said, it's super expensive. the best thing about the jerven bag is the mountain camo pattern.

    • @likota123
      @likota123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, what you say applies to the basic Jerven bag. The Hunter and Thermo Versions are not breathable but the Primaloft insulation reduces the condensation inside. So you have a 100% waterproof bag with good insulation with condensation issues (depending on the circumstances):

    you've got to tent this bivy. over a ridgeline, or you'll lose half of its potential warmth. Unless you're a petite woman,, the regular size is too small. Every place that you let it touch you forms a cold spot, unless it's under you, where, you've got many inches of dry debris protecting you from heat lost to conduction. It wont stop much wind. It's good for about 20F degrees more warmth than outside temps, IF you tent it, tape the seams, and provide a coil of shemagh around the 3" breathing hole. This lets you press your face into the coil, keeping your breath outside of the bivy and your body-warmed air inside of the bivy. By adding 5 of the 2.3 oz each 55 gallon drum liners, 1 lb of net hammock, few spring-clamps, a couple of the 1/4 lb full body bugnet bags from Amazon, $25 each, some dry debris, tape, stakes, and cordage, for a total of 4.5 lbs, you can get a set of cammies, shemagh, sock liners, un-laced boots, balaclava and gloves, a UCO lantern and beeswax candle, about 1.5 lbs total additional gear, you can sleep ok at 10F, without any external heat source. Given a discrete Dakota fire pit to heat rocks or water, you can sleep ok at 0F for several hours. Given a 2x3 ft oval of clear PEVA shower curtain to close the open end of the bivy, and a Siberian fire lay aimed at the PEVA, with the hot rocks inside of the bivy, you can sleep ok at -20F, for 2-3 hours. Then you have to swap out the rocks and move-forward the fire-logs about a foot.

    Chris, that tarp looked like it was made of essentially the same material with a backing as the Frogg Togg rain suits. I know the FT's are notoriously fragile and prone to ripping easily. The stuff looked like it was at least "ripstopped" and is obviously quite a a bit tougher. Do you know to what I refer?

    if you'll overlap two of the drum liners around the ends of the bivy and stuff the area between the liners and the bivy with dry debris, you'll sleep fine at 30F, no wind or rain, , or at 34F, in high wind and rain. The bugnet suits, stuffed with debris, worn as longjohns, get you down to 20F. The 3 remaining drum liners, wrapped around your body, outside of the cammies, with debris, get you down to sleeping ok at 10F. None of this gear is effected by its getting wet and it's all useful in summertime. You'd need 10 lbs more gear/clothing/poncho/tarp, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc, in order to be as protected/versatile.
    I really like this bivy, but you have to know how to maximize its utility. There's debris everywhere, altho you might have to use the UCO, your body heat and the bivy to dry out a double arm load of debris to put between the bugnet suits. That can take 3 hours. The bugnet suits go under your cammies, so the debris inside of them has to be dry. The other debris is used outside of your cammies/bivy, so it need not be as dry. The hammock I set up 4" off of the ground when it's cold, and kick debris up around it, enough to prevent air flow from passing under it. I use both a 1 lb buttpack and a 2 lb day pack. If need be, I empty them, pack them with debris and use them as sleeping pads./insulation.

Is that bivy breathable? and we've been having weird weather. warm during the day freezing at night. one day it was 47 that night it was 17. does that 35/32 degree temp that you outlined have to be the high and then go out. or does it simply have to get that cold that night? thanks.

    Did you jump out of lots of planes while in the military? I've heard all those hard landings is how lots of people lose a few inches of height

      I 2nd that! Even though I already have one and did a video on it a few months ago I like to see a good company like this get their stuff in front of a bigger audience.

      +Jeff Holmes $50 for a shovel that doesn't do as good a job as a $25 Cold Steel shovel? Is folding really of enough importance to justify twice the value and not near the same performance? I don't mean to be a smartass, I'm just wondering. Having gone through at least 5 Gerber folding shovels, I gave up on folding as being an acceptable component of a shovel.
