The thread pattern kind of reminds me of Schwalbes G-One serie. Especially if they are easy to set up tubeless they should be a great entry level gravel tire for the US customer base.
Thanks for the review. I was super excited to see American Classic was back in business, and to see some reasonably priced tires for a change. Their wheels were amazing before. Their website indicates that they will have wheelset offerings again "coming soon". I can't wait to see what they produce.
Enjoy your videos. I recently purchased 2 different bicycles with 700x40mm gravel tires. $70 Bontrager team, one tubeless, one tubeless ready riims need to purchase tape, tubeles tires, valve stems, etc. to upgrade tubeless. The Bontrager team are cushy and very stable for most riding surfaces even wet grass steep downhills. I guess I could buy one for comparison and use it on the rear to see how it compares. Weight is not an issue.
The timing on this is really good, Russ! I'm starting to build out a mixed terrain SS with a 700x40 tire setup and tires are on the top of my mind, along with bars. Your videos are always helpful. Thanks!
Great review! Thanks for the in-depth info. I'm looking at tires, trying to balance my needs, and not wanting to spend too much on a choice that might not pan out while I gain experience with my options. Also: hump tulips. You say it just like those two words. (I know, I know.) Signed, a guy from the Peninsula.
Thanks for the review. I'm not trying either of these, but I did come across the Kimberlite tires while looking through American Classic and they look perfect on paper. Can't wait to see how they look on gravel
The aggregate looks like the schwalbe g one all around tire tread. The udden looks like the wtb riddler. I like that a lower priced version exists now.
After some long distance rides this year, 12-15 h per ride - for me the most important thing is reliability! Started with Conti Terra Speed, killed it after 600 km. After that Schwalbe G-One Bite - seems to be bomb proof but the feeling is less comfortable. A very fluffy tire is the Tufo Gravel Thundero (Czech republic). 3000 km this winter without an issue, very supple and fast but sold out over the summer months - this is the tire to beat for me!
Could you rode these in the winter, snow, mud slush? I have Maxxis ramblers not. But don't want a really aggressive tread since they hold stuff. Or what do you recommend from this company
It''s my job to pick up all the nails falling out truck beds as I commute so I will buy a set for a new commuter bike that sees dirt andd reliability os important. I want to try the Aggregrate too. I also like the light brown sidewall. I really covet the bamboo bars, Some day.
thanks for the video, wanted to have a set of big 700x50c with some knobs for dirt trails but was also curious about trying 50c with a slick center for road to trail days... Got the Kimberlite and the
TPI - 120. Pretty high, so should be a good weave on the sidewalls. Plus, added layers of protection on contact surfaces will attract bikepacking and touring riders...even if the tires are a bit on the heavy side. The caveat is if they are supple? Will wait for the test ride. Thanks Russ...good find!
You seem to be in somewhat better spirits Russ........good to see. I know how you love to go low for your signature "supple ride", but how low are we talking when you hit your "sweet spot" with pressure? I'm the weird fan that likes pressures up, so I'm always curious what others are doing. Good video per usual, and it's nice to see that this company isn't gouging their clientele. I'd ride them.....
The Udens look just like my Bontrager tires that I like quite a lot. Awful in mud, because the knobs are just too shallow, but other than that, they fit my needs very well.
I just got a 2018 Breezer Doppler Team, which you reviewed a few years ago. They stopped making it and now have the Doppler Team +. Any idea what prompted the changes or how the two compare? I can't find much press about the 2018 version aside from your review and though I can see differences in the specs, I don't know enough about bike geometry to turn those into a narrative. Thanks for the great videos! I'm happy to subscribe and join the 650b family.
The weight is competitive with any tire outside of Rene Herse. For the price who can feel 20 ish grams difference between this and a beloved Pathfinder?
That wasn't the weight you were feeling in comparison to the other tires, it was higher rolling resistance...which, based on the description of the construction, isn't surprising (but nonetheless disappointing). Folks often attribute "sluggish" performance to extra weight when it's actually the result of higher rolling resistance (a quick look at the physical effects of that additional weight shows it would take quite a LOT to be even noticeable, i.e. considerably more than what you describe), so you're not alone in that ;-)
Compliance is a big part of a tire feeling fast. I have 4. inch Schwalbe Jumbo Jim / Liteskins on my fat bike, and it rides like a normal (non-fat) rigid mountain bike even though the tires weigh 990 grams. That's because the casing is extremely supple. My fat bike actually feels more agile than my gravel bike did with its stock WTB Ventures, which weigh something like 450 grams less *per tire*. On pavement the Jumbo Jims feel like they maintain speed once you spin them up; with the Ventures you can feel your speed bleed away the instant you stop pedaling. On the other hand GravelKing SKs ride more like road tires. They've got a more supple casing than the Ventures, although the Ventures are a little more rugged. It's a tradeoff: fast, rugged, or affordable, choose any one and a half-ish.
@@tanhalt Two different ways of talking about the same thing, I think. Every tire has to deform to create a contact patch that will support the tire's load, and the some of the energy it takes to do that isn't returned. I'm convinced that most things other than a more flexible tire tire casing have relatively minor effects on efficiency. Some of the things you do to make the tire casing more flexible affect durability though, which is why I think there's a cost/durability/speed tradeoff. These tires may be a good value because of their durability but I wouldn't expect them to roll fast. I wouldn't expect a fast, durable tire to be cheap either.
These tires look super rad. Given that I'm on an older Swiss Cross canti, I'm stuck at 700x38 max. Oh well. I've dabbled around (WTB Nanos - so good!; Teravail Cannonball - slippery on wet pavement!) and have settled on the Steilacooms from RH. Pricey af however they ride FAST on paved and dig in on the nasty stuff once my ride to the ride ends and it's all dirt.
The Hunts are great, but they currently list December as shipping date. You can get the rims, which I did, and build your own, plus have your choice of hubs (I love DT Swiss 350s, QUIET & bulletproof). I got my wife a Poseidon Redwood, and it's stock wheels are junk. The only ones that fit the bill that were in stock were the FSA NS Road/Gravel Disc Convertibles. In stock now & only $400! I was nervous about 24H, but they are holding up well. Wife had never been off road (heck her previous bike couldn't fit 28s!), and I can't get her to come off the saddle when hitting roots, etc. But they are still straight & true. My only negative is how loud the freehub is.
Go for the Winspace, I have a set of Hyper 50mm and they're insanely quick and comfortable with a great rider weight limit and they aren't expensive. Also have the 650b gravel set which I'm about to purchase tyres for. If they're like the Hyper I'll love them.
Great video! Are there gravel tires you would recommend for road bikes? I'd like to ride gravel paths but I don't want to buy a new bike. Are there any lower height ( I use cantilever brakes) gravel tires out there?
Well. I'm just running some cheap Chinese Kendas (the tread pattern seems to only be sold stand alone in Asia) on my 26" DF and some dirt cheap (like $12 a tire cheap) 20" BMX tires on my recumbent trike.
Nothing wrong with Kenda tyres typically. They are a huge OEM manufacturer so many other brand tyres are made by them anyway at higher prices. CST/Maxxis are the other big OEM supplier. If you buy something like a WTB, Giant or Specialized tyre its probably made by Kenda or CST. I'm in the UK but was thinking $35 was mid range to upper mid-range price point. I typically pay up to about £15 a tyre with an average price of about £6-8 I think. I always look for the discounted tyres rather than choose a model and just find the cheapest source. I'm a heavy rider so strong thick tyres with thick sidewalls is my preference which are typically cheaper tyres anyway. Its much harder to make a light hard wearing tyre. These American Classic tyres look fairly basic construction to me. I wonder which factory makes them. Factory door price of tyres is only around $2-3 or was around a year ago so its important to shop around as there is a huge variety in pricing.
I don't know I just paid 90 euros for a pair of Cinturato Gravels, that's not much more expensive than these budget tires and Pirelli makes some of the best tyres out there.
Great review Russ. You got the upside and downside. Now we can make an educated/ economic decision. Now let's hope they are available. Fingers crossed!
i have always been shocked as price discrepency between a car tire and a bike tire...the shops are always like...we aint the middle man..and obviously there is a lot more to balance, speed, weight, traction with a bike tire but nonetheless its pretty f* crazy, how much my car tire can do vs bike
Honestly, looks like an amazing upgrade for folk starting out on department store bikes. I should know, I have one of those bikes i"m putting slightly better drivetrain, etc on. It's a good 'learn on a budget' sort of thing. Plus. C'mon tanwall. They look a HELL of a lot better than a set of blacks.
Dude $35 is a budget? Lol Im currently using a Continental Mountain King 700x35C Pure Grip Nytech Breaker. This is like ridding a thinner Maxxis Ikon 🤣 I bought it for $25! Now that's what you call a budget 🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes a review/shoutout comes along from a channel I watch regularly that makes me add the product directly to cart. Thanks for making such a vid!

I was thinking the same thing and I love g-ones although they also have a limit on steep loose gravel
Looks like the aggregate I mean
Thanks for fixing products like this and for not shunning them based upon price.

Those look like a good idea on a 90's 26" to 650b city grinder Franken-bike type thing.

Nice to see affordable gravel tires that don't rival a car payment $$ wise.

Tire reviews. Good idea.
Kinda wish they had a 700x45 size in between the 40 and 50s they have now.
When did American Classic make a comeback? Or are they under a new owner now?
Holy gravel batman! These are great! Bought. Done. Over. And thanks Russ!
Finally a cheaper gravel option that comes with tan sidewalls. Heavy yes but added protection means goathead thorns be damned!

DT Swiss

This would be a sweet 26” tire!!!!!
How do you like the DT Swiss GR 1600’s?
They're great solid wheels.
I'm hoping they'll have smaller sized gravel tires later on and it's nice to have more choices. I buy bike tires more than I buy new shoes! ;-)

Might have missed it, are they tubeless compatible?
Yes. Tubeless compatible.
Anyone mixed the two tread types? Considering putting more road oriented one on the back.

I think they are competing with the G Ones as others wrote and are at the price point oems buy their tires as a standard on complete bikes.
Yep half the price. Not sure about. I run some 2.25 g-ones and I believe they are around 650g ea. Schwalbe has a bewildering array of casings tho
Are you familiar with VAAST bikes ? Can you please comment

Yes! Especially since 26” is pretty expensive nowadays, at least in where i live

hoping this tire availabe in Indonesia
