New BMW X5 M50d Review - Quad-turbo Monster?

BMW recently launched their 4th generation X5, the car that originally created a whole new segment and which has sold in vast numbers ever since. The third generation saw the introduction of a special, high performance diesel model known as the M50d.
Back in 2014 we actually drag raced it over a quarter mile against the supercharged V8 Range Rover Sport and the result was...surprising. You can watch that video here:

And now there's a brand new M50d, and for some reason BMW saw fit to add another turbo charger, making this a rare quad-turbo beast.
In this video we get stuck in and take a detailed look at the new X5. Our video guy Ciro De Siena will take you through all the tech and specs you might care for and he even offers an opinion or two about its performance, acceleration and handling.
And lastly we try and answer the question, is the X5 M50d enough of a performance SUV for your money, or should you wait for the upcoming X5 M?

This M50d is really an amazing car,I drove this for a good 6 months..the torque is simply perfect for it and it’s not underpowered at all..I live in Botswana and our roads aren’t exactly spacious or suitable for very high speeds but this serves its purpose very well...I hauled my family in it and it was amazing that I could smoke any versions of the C63 from stand still and rolling,it’s a wonderful car..simply amazing in every aspect.

Another engine with 4 turbos and 2 superchargers is the Detroit diesel 16V149...puts out around 2000hp

I think the 3ltr would then be a better option if you're looking for a family car. Unless of course you just want to brag that u have 4 turbos in your beemer

Truth. The 30D is not much slower and it's quite a bit more economical. The M50D is a "want" car.

With a good good ECU tune you can easily get this beast up to a 1000Nm or maybe even more.

@@henkstols9326 good, then watch what you say in the public domain because other people understand and adore such a vehicle, i personally wouldnt tune an X5 but i respect peoples opinions and with humility disagree where necessary, you cant just call people 'yuppies' and i dont think 'yuppies' can afford this vehicle..
I drove the new M50d and my own 2015 M50d with air suspension back to back and was absolutely not thrilled by the new car's ride and handling. The new M50d certainly has better synthetic exhaust sound going on but mechanically, it doesn't feel like a major improvement over the old one. Will try it again when I can get a 7 seat version with air suspension.
F15 x5 on rear air uses adaptive dampers to stiffen it up. It's far better and more precise and stable than the dual air on the new car

ShmeeSHemmmShublyou didn't develop the quad turbo engine specifically for the new X5. They developed it a couple of years ago and put it in the 750D and in some markets, the M550D (G30). They're not going to develop multiple engines in multiple configurations. Anyway great video.

Why luck? It's the same process with any car. Pay to have new tyres fitted. If you can afford a R1 million car you can afford to run it.

4 Turbo chargers is not implemented to get more power or more speed. It is neccesarry to comply to the strict emission laws in Europe.

I honestly love this car. Sire, it's not a Porsche but it does come very close to what the Cayenne delivers.
There is no performance diesel Cayenne now so if you want their V8 diesel you'd need to buy a used one.

The current BMW 750d/750Ld uses basically the same engine, and also has 4 turbochargers.
Yup, it is the exact same engine. The engine has been around for a couple of years and is also in the M550D.
German engineering is some kind of wizardry
This engine can push out way more than 350Kw , as we shall see with the X5M50d Competition

How would you know?? This car is released like a month ago and there is no single one problem yet, and there will not be any major problems for atleast 5 years from now.
Dragan Arapović because turbo cars are alot to maintain, so imagine maintaining 4 different turbo chargers 6 years down the line
You dont buy a car like this if you are worried about maintenance cost

If you take turbos off this it will be slower than a economy n\a hatchback.

I really like the X4 M40d in terms of its price and performance. Its cheaper but just as good.
Well done BMW! (Hope it doesn't break down every 1000km once its over 100 000km, and as such becomes a maintenance and depreciation nightmare...)

PS: I found it amusing that this car has the same 0-60 and the same power (approx) as a 2009 ML550 with 285kw, 0-60 in 5.3 and it too is a torque monster that you barely touch the pedal to woosh past people and all they hear is a woosh of air. Congratulations BMW. You've made a megacruiser to go toe-to-toe with the 10-year old ML550.

Previous gen 280KW = 375HP, 740NM, 0-100=5.3s
This one 294KW = 394Hp, 760NM, 5.2s
Audi SQ7 320KW = 429Hp, 900NM, 4.8s
The veyron and also the chiron have quad turbos .
The extra turbo is not for more power is for to come power much lower and Make it almost Lagless!!

The 3 years old SQ7 is way more impressive. Also a 12 years old audi Q7 V12 TDI
Anyway, close to an audi Q8, that offers the same trunk and more space on the rear seats, the X5 looks 5-7 years older to the audi. Also, the bmw is likely more expensive to run because the mild hybrid Q8 offers a great MPG on this category (also offers, dual pane glasses, B&0 3d hi-fi and a lot more features than this X5).
Those VW are not in the same league as an X5, plus Q7 is utterly ugly and boring Audi hardly sell that boat
@@lawrenceonline ugly is subjective, I find X5 and GLE way uglier than Q7 and XC90.
