  • Today's episode comes from a discussion during a recent television fitness segment interview where I was actually asked about black toenails in runners.
    If you've been running for a long time, undoubtedly you've had this happen at least once. I've had it happen multiple times.
    I realized, after many years of racing, that if I did any run longer than about 20 miles, and I didn't do some specific things to really provide care for my nails and protect them, I would wind up with one of my second toenails bruised, discolored and painful.
    Today on the Doc On The Run podcast we're talking about the top three reasons runners get black toenails after long runs and races.

    Thanks for this video. I am definitely catching the mesh. Only had this problems when I bought my first pair of "racing shoes." Not many people mention this.

    Just got back into Roller skating. Noticed my Big Toe Nail was black after going consistently. At first I thought it was the dye from the inside of my skates. Thank you for clarifying. Ill need to protect my Toe nails better during my sessions.

    I bought a shoe that is 1/2 size too small. It's all they had in stock. My toes were fine on short runs. But I just ran a half. 2 toenails are now black. Guess I'll just use them on short runs only.

    I've never had this happen so far but it's good to be aware of the causes so I can try to avoid it as my runs get longer. Thanks 👍🏻🏃‍♂️

    Thanks for this. I do not run but I have been walking a lot to lose some weight and my toenail all of a sudden became very dark, swollen and tender, it appeared as if I had bleeding under the nail and it began separating from the toe, it also got infected underneath (maybe a fungus, not sure). Very painful and ugly. The dermatologist prescribed a psoriasis medication which has somehow been working but I wonder if it is in fact psoriasis.

    I would go for long walks and some long runs. My shoes were my right size and I had my toe nails done(pedicure) so I never saw the trauma I was causing to my toe nails, not until the pain got a bit timid and I removed my pedicure to discover black pooling of dry blood, on both my big toenails. It sucks. I tried not wearing tight shoes, or closed shoes, well that didn't help either. As i was wearing my socks today, one toenail is now loose on the side and I wanted to cry. I'm gonna lose this toe (the other one in due time )..no more running for me until this toe grows back healthy and neat.

    I'm new to running but one thing I found is that my socks create loads of pressure on my toes, just imagine putting your sock on and forcing your foot inside 5000 times, what I did was cut holes for my toes to fit through results were amazing.

    Hello. Thank you for this video. You mentioned black toe nails but you did not mention thick toe nails. Mine are black, but the toe nail itself is like a centimeter thick, which is thick! Do you have any further knowledge about thickness?

    Hi. One of my closest friends has brown toenails; probably 20 years now. She’s does not have a fungus or a liver problem. Her doctor told her it’s due to having a lot of melanin and there is no cure to clear her nails. Do you know of any medical or holistic treatments that can clear up the nails?

    • @DocOnTheRun
      @DocOnTheRun  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Callie, Thank you for watching. Unfortunately I cannot recommend a treatment with deciding myself on what needs to be treated. I can understand how frustrating it must be when a doctor says, "there is no cure to clear her nails". Perhaps encouraging your friend to see another opinion from a different doctor could help her get some more information.

    • @ddawg3230
      @ddawg3230 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your friend doesn't seem to have an actual issue. Does she feel any pain? If not, then its just a normal feature for darker skinned people, for last 2-3 toes to be in a dark brown color. Trying to 'clear' that might be akin to trying to bleach skin for a lighter color lol

      @@whicheverfour about 3 years ago, I was going out of town and bought some Asics Gel Nimbus that were literally 1.5 sizes smaller than stated. Couldn't run the entire time I was out of town. I was I took them back and the guy in the shoe dept. said the entire run cam "off" for all sizes...just way to small. Always try them on before you leave the store!
