Future Africa: Urban Accra and the Skytrain

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 28 มี.ค. 2020
  • So about a year ago Ghana penned a deal to develop its own skytrain in Accra, fast forward to today and things are moving at an impressive pace. Contractors have been picked, travel routes finalized and money should finally start exchanging hands by this year in 2020, with construction following shortly thereafter.
    And it couldn’t come sooner, the city of Accra is quite congested, and one look at the planned travel routes for the skytrain shows you how the Ghanaian government wants to alleviate this problem once and for all. Many of the initial lines and stops are plotted across the Greater Accra Region, this should encourage more people living in the suburbs to commute into the city by train instead of car, and possibly lure more residents away from the city into the outskirts as better travel links should help increase its overall appeal and attract more investment.
    But before we look more into its impact, let’s take a moment to figure out what exactly a Skytrain is.
    A skytrain can be considered as light rail, how it is distinguished from other modes ofr rail transport such as the monorail is that is can run on conventional rail gauges with an additional set of rails as the power source below called a third and sometimes fourth rail, this allows for the removal of the conductor rail above and smaller tunnel sections which means cheaper infrastructure. And a number of major cities across the world already play host to them, such as Bangkok and Jakarta.
    A core part of what helps the skytrain function is the linear induction motor.
    A linear induction motor is a motor with no moving parts, it uses a permanently magnetised track to create a magnetic pull, this is complemented. By running electricity through magnets in a coil unit that runs above the track rail, that can be turned on, off and reversed using a magnetic force, it alternates between north and south pulls that create a forward motion.
    Essentially the track is lined with alternating north south nodes permanently turned on, the coil unit above is loaded with north south nodes that are turned on and off pulling the magnets closer or further away from the track, this is timed so when a negative force magnet comes down it pushes the unit forward and when a positive force motions down it pulls the unit forward, these can be reversed to create a stop motion.
    The train track is a permanently electrified rail, this supplies power to the coiled magnet unit in the base of the train carriage, called the linear induction motor, by turning on alternating positive forces this pulls the unit forward along the track. By using the same mechanism to create negative forces this creates a stopping motion to act as a brake.
    Going beyond its functionality, the Accra Skytrain is exactly what the development doctor delivered, because the fact is, you simply cannot cultivate a major city without some sort of overground or underground rail service. It’s unrivaled in its ability to move large numbers of people from one side of the city to another, and the Accra Skytrain will help facilitate Ghana’s increasingly urban population, open up new markets for workers and businesses and help support the country’s growing tourism industry, quickly and cheaply.
    However, the rail is not without its pitfalls, it may not even be fit for purpose, and it could end up sharpening the divide between the haves and have-nots of the country.

    • @jakebaba2149
      @jakebaba2149 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markeselotto8301 Unfortunately, there are no opportunities for private sector residential development, because it is mainly an already dense, built up, though very old inner city area and most residents work in the fishing industry and are highly dependent on the fishing harbour being rebuilt and modernised. There is no space for new private sector residential development. It may also be so for commercial development too, with the new harbour, however there may be new opportunities for shops and hospitality facilities i.e. motels, night clubs, restaurants etc.

      The skytrain may cause noise pollution. Places like, for example, Las Vegas, USA and Canary Wharf, London, UK suffer with excruciating noise pollution upon arrival and departure of each train. It is sad that the city planners have the mentality of the city planners of the West who also plan for the benefit of a few rather than the entire population of the area affected and being developed. Why is it that the poor neighbourhoods are consistently overlooked? It really saddens me.

Actually as a Ghanaian am sick and tired of seeing everything good being given to only a single city alone in the name of the oligarchic capital,what about cape coast? What about Kumasi? The shit was supposed to be done in August of this year and the project has not even started. Ghana, just say that you don’t want to be a developed country. Because at this point, all of these promises, the marine drive project, the railway project, the new smart city projects, etc. all still animations with no action. You don’t want to catch up to the rest of the world. You don’t care. So, just say that you want to continue being looked as inferior by the rest of the world, and remain a poverty stricken shit hole that you and all of africa has become known as. Enough with the blame on enough blame on Europe and colonization. If you really wanted change we would see at least an attempt at it. Keep in mind that I am furious while typing this. I want nothing more than africa to succeed and to be a beacon of hope for all the diaspora to look to as home. But if we all continue to just look past all the problems and ignore the corruption and poverty you’re going to be like this forever. So I’m done hoping and praying that you change. Forget it. And go ahead and resign to hosting the African games in 2023. You have to build all these stadiums and facilitate which don’t look like they will be ready in two years. Give them up now so you can avoid further humiliation. After all you don’t care.
