RV Awning Fabric Replacement - Easy Way (RV Living Full Time) 4K

- Hurricane ripped off our awning - Hurricane, Utah that is - during the hot month of July. We needed a replacement awning.
We have had our 2017 Grand Design Solitude fifth wheel trailer since 2019.
And our first camping trip, before we started traveling in our RV full time, our awning arms hit a tree. So, we installed new arms - stronger.
We also added a Carefree of Colorado EZ Zip awning shade in about a year ago.
Now, while camping at Sand Hallow State Park near Zion National Park, our already damaged, dried, and ripped awning fabric finally came unstitched.
Unfortunately, Utah state parks did not allow Amazon deliveries - so we had to wait until we were near a UPS store to get our new awning replacement shade material from ShadePro through Amazon & install it. - That took a month- in July in Utah. so hot,- and we were drycamping in that month. @Carefreeofcolorado
In this video, we show you the ripped awning, how we tied the awning arms down so we could safely travel and how we installed the new awning replacement fabric without having to take apart the awning arms.

We are a married couple in our mid 50s who downsized and sold our house so we can see the sights and enjoy every day to live deliberately as full time RVers - traveling with our dog Scruffy, in our Grand Design Solitude 310 GK fifth wheel.

Instructions from ShadePro mention using silicone lubricant. We already had the silicone for our jacks, retractable ladder, etc
That looks so much easier than pulling the whole thing down and all the other seemingly unnecessary steps that other people do. My new awning fabric just came in so I'm about to try to tackle this project DIY. 😅 Thank you very much for sharing you're helpful tips and tricks! 🐱
Glad we could help. Good luck
@@DownsizingMakesCents 👍 No luck brother. Yesterday I said a prayer and drilled out holes on the end cap and worked all three channels in at once. With help from the good Lord above, some 3 in 1 RV rubber spray, and you're creative thinking I got it done.
Excellent DIY project made possible by Larry the Handyman. Thanks for showing that it is possible with one ladder and a helper.
Jim, thanks. Larry is indeed very handy
Alice
Great job guys!!! Shew, this is something we’re needing to do.🤗
Thanks. We wish we replaced it sooner
Larry another great video, you are one of the most ingenious people I have ever seen.
Wow. I’m (Alice) not letting him read this comment. He’s hard enough to deal with 😁
Way to go Larry! Great Video
Thanks 👍
Good DIY video. Thanks
Thanks for watching
Great video! Lots of good information! I'll defiantly keep an eye on my awning to make sure I replace before it tears!
Thanks. Spread the word. It’s a real hassle if the stitching comes undone.
I want to put glue all the way down
Very nice, good job. Thank you for the video.
Thank you. We hope this helps other RVers
Excellent job 👍🇺🇲
🤗
Great video, I'm sure videoing this made it much mor difficult, Thanks for going through that extra work so we can see how it's done!
Thank you for realizing it.
So many DIYs take much longer because of the filming. Especially because Larry sometimes gets “fancy” with multiple camera angles 😆
Excellent information. Thank you.👍🏼😎
🤗
So glad I found this video. I'm getting ready to replace the center of 3 awnings on my 395M. It is a box style awning, no wall mounted arms. Hope I can slide both top and bottom of fabric at the same time the way you did in the video! Thank you!
Larry realized it’s easier if you leave the plastic on
Let us know how it goes
Nice fix. New stuff looks good. We learned real quick and just left our awing in when out west. lol We about lost ours in TX on our 2nd stay and that was the last time we had it out until we got back east. New fabric looks great though. Hope y'all are having a great time. Lots of cool stuff to see out there. The guy I sold my Class A to has it up for sale. He is buying a new Dutch Star. Later y'all.
We hope this one will last a bit.
This area is amazing. We are in Tetons and saw a Buffalo blockade coming into the National Park.
Selling your A already? Wow.
Miss you guys
Good DIY video for people! I just use a portable pop up 13’x13’ canopy next to my RV ! It’s quick to set up and I don’t care if the wind destroyed it ! Trying to keep it simple. I consider less is more ! Just me . Thanks for sharing.😁👍
We have seen others use those.
Thanks
I saw a video and followed how one person can feed in on the end like you did, but they used a tarp clamp and a piece of paracord through a small pulley on the other end. Pulling on the cord, pulled it in and he guided the feed end in. Pretty slick but a PIA
Cool idea. Hope we don’t have to use it anytime soon.
And yes - PIA
I replaced the awning fabric once... it was a manual awning and really wasn't too bad, but it's def not something I would look forward to doing again. lol
Believe me, we don’t want to do this again - especially not in the hot Utah sun 😁
I’m in the same situation, one ladder and one man show. Thank you for this video.
Glad you found it helpful.
Instead of using silicone spray which leaves a residue I alway use an aresol glass cleaner spray. I have replaced a number of awnings and slide topper fabrics and the glass cleaner always works great and never leaves any residue.
Great tip. Thanks
More good diy.. My awning arms got bent by one gust while open in my driveway. I can still use it but i have to manually force it closed. Thanks DMC
Ours gets stuck coming out. A little wiggle then boom it’s out.
There's a 2nd spline to slide in the tube and you didn't do that one?
I saw the same thing wondered why I didn't put both of them in
We have a shade that slides in that spot
See my response
Alice
@DownsizingMakesCents but the main awning itself is designed to have 2 splines in the tube for longevity of tight and strength? Just educated guess.
Great video, Larry. I useley use glass cleaner for a lubricant, thoe.
That’s what someone else wrote. We may try that
My pins failed from corrosion and the awning fell to the ground right before a trip.WTF! Removed everything and disected both heads, removing the sheered pins. The motor was disassembled to get to the pins.Ordered pins and a new awning. Glad it failed before we left. Around 220 bucks. Glad I'm mechanically endowed.
You are lucky it didnt come off traveling down the road, i think its really hard to rv with Being ME. Mechanically Endowded. Larry
good job sir, would have been half the time w/another ladder/set of hands.... did mine the old fashion way but getting ready to do my buddies so will try this way?? now all u have to worry about is all those RAM recalls🤠
I idid wish i had an better ladder with us, and I am avoiding the dealer for the recall by doing all the truck service myself, oil, filters, fuel filters, trans oil and filters etc. i hate the dealers. And i dont want the software recall. Larry
@@DownsizingMakesCentsthere are a few important recalls currently(2018-curr) so if u do decide to get em done pick your dealer and call them so they have time to order the parts that way they can do the work when you show up, it will be the whole day, my parts have been on order for almost a year now so it is a painful process for owners!!! be safe out there 🤠
Larry..Thanks for the video. If you didn't have your slide sticking out and forming a corner, Would you have tackled this project yourself?
I did most of the work standing on the ladder so I suppose, even if I didn’t have the slide, I would have still done it myself , Larry
How do you just the power awning to go back in the track. Mine is misaligned. Great video
Remove the screw that keeps the spline from sliding on the RV side, get on the roof and have somebody move the awning in and out and watch the arms, slide the spline in the direction you need the arms to move to to align with the arm frame on the rv. After it is aligned put the fixing screw back in, that’s how we do it. Larry
Alice is right about it being a flimsy piece of crap. I ordered a Sunshade replacement fabric and within a few months it was starting to stretch and sag. And I'm just a casual weekend camper. I don't know who makes the best fabric, but it's not Sunshade.
Wow. Sorry to hear that. We hope the shade on our new RV holds up better
Alice
Sorry you had to get a new awning :(
It comes with the lifestyle, unfortunately
