ICU RN here, and I want you, lovely viewer, to remember that nurses and doctors are only part of the hospital team that is suffering in this way. Respiratory therapists, nursing assistants, unit secretaries, technicians, custodians, kitchen workers, and every other position I’m not aware of in the hospital… we are all tired. And they’re all leaving.
All my love to every position in the hospitals - every single one is important to patient care.

@@niceontheeyes9269 fellow nurse here. I'm also in my mid-30's, with no risk factors, and fully vaccinated. If you look at the abundance of evidence, being vaccinated will significantly reduce risk of infection, length of infection, and severity. The first two are important because they limit the spread, and the third one keeps you out of the hospital. The above applies to the Delta variant. You having had COVID in February definitely gives you a degree of natural immunity, but recent studies have indicated that immunity from previous infections and vaccination give you an even stronger immune response. The risk for any adverse reaction for you is extremely low based on data from millions of vaccinations. When it comes to long term effects, there's no theoretical reason why there would be. mRNA is broken down pretty quickly in the body, and what is left is your enhanced immune response. All of our knowledge of vaccines tells us that the latest we see side effects are by 1-2 months, and we've had millions of people that have been vaccinated for 8 months or longer that haven't developed new side effects. There isn't at rationale why a side effect would just appear many months or years later based on our understanding of the science. I understand your hesitancy about something new like this, it can be scary. I think it's important to challenge that fear with a rational approach. Also, look at the rate for MD's that are vaccinated, it's extremely high. I would say that arguably have a greater understanding of the science and risks, and their all in. I'm not judging you at all, but I hope that I could be a little helpful.

@@niceontheeyes9269 The problem is that you need to protect other people. As a nurse, you should know that the unvaccinated are causing the variants. You should also know that you can still pass it along and infect other people. Like say, your 50 year old overweight auntie or someone. Just because you are in your thirties, in shape and "Nice on the eyes" doesn't mean you cannot catch or spread this virus. Plenty of doctors and nurses are speaking out about younger people dying. Also, it's not just about YOU. It's about others, as well.

As a nurse we also shouldn't be forced to work 3 consecutive days in a row unless we sign up for it. Working 3 days in a row for 12hrs is exhausting you're just sleeping if you're lucky and returning to work. Half of my unit is covid and the other oncology. It doesn't matter what side of the unit you work on its hard the floor is so heavy. I'm driving home fighting sleep, my back hurts and I have two more days to go...It's a lot

I hate to play devils advocate here, but there are many jobs that work 12 hour rotating shifts, until they retire. Many of them being manual labor. 4 days on 3 days off. When the workload gets higher they can go 16 hours until needing to be checked for exhaustion. If they appear fine, they can work longer. While "my" schedule isn't consistently like this, our department would also have to work 12 hour shifts minimum (with high probability to go longer), 13 days out of 14 days, one day mandatory break, for up to 6 months depending on the project. This includes manual labor, climbing, lifting, very hot surroundings, very loud noises and much more.
I know this won't make you feel better though. I also wish our healthcare system was more robust to prevent this type of scheduling. Sorry? 🤷‍♂️

Instead of focusing on one segment of healthcare ( there are also docs, techs etc dying and heavily burnt out)- please focus on how much top admins with little to no medical training/expertise are profiting off of healthcare instead of providing the much needed hazard pay to frontline workers. Please do a review of the take home comp of these nonmedical admins in hospitals and insurance companies that have driven up the cost of healthcare and decreased the quality to pay themselves in millions.

That’s for sure a problem. Another problem is that the nurses ARE getting hazard pay, double time etc because they are so short staffed…but that doesn’t prevent burnout but rather incentivizes it. And you’re right…techs, clerks, nutritionists, pharmacists etc are also getting burnt out but not getting the extra pay/attention of docs and nurses.

My ICU was a strict COVID ICU for over a year. Out of 32 beds roughly 25 were vented COVID patients. The most that died in one day that I was there for was six. A minimum of three or so died almost everyday. I heard of a 16 bed ICU losing their entire census to COVID in one day. I had a patient who I tried to calm by establishing rapport and fist bumped to keep him calm. Though I knew deep down he was probably heading towards the end. A week later I came back to work and he was on the ventilator, sedated, on paralytics, CRRT, and proned. He died a few days later. I had another man I tried to calm and keep the BIPAP mask on, but he couldn’t stand how the mask felt. He ripped the mask off and yelled “I’m gonna die man”. I talked to his wife and tried to give hope to the BIPAP treatment, but I had already seen enough to know the trajectory that would likely come. He too died shortly after. I’ve seen those who linger as a shell of who they were after COVID… sustained by machines and medications. I’ve talked to people and given hope, only to see the same road being taken again and again. I’ve heard the wails of family. I’ve called family to let them know they should probably come soon due to rapid deterioration. A patient said the hospital felt like a lonely place during that year due to no visitors being allowed in order to prevent transmission. He wasn’t wrong. I’ve stayed next to COVID patients to give company so they wouldn’t die alone. They were completely unaware at that point, but perhaps it was worth something. The countless amounts of CPR that was performed. Watching vitals slowly decline towards the inevitable. I don’t remember the names, but I have images and rooms burned into my memory.

Just so you know, a pilot can legally work up to a 13 hr duty day. This is dependent on how many flights (legs) they are operating that day and their report time. You can find more details by reading FAA FAR part 117. On the other hand, Flight Attendants, who are your first responders in the sky and are responsible for evacuating an aircraft in 90 seconds, regardless of size, can be legally scheduled to work up to 14 hr duty days. Depending on how many flight attendants on an aircraft, that duty day can be extended anywhere up to 20hrs during irregular operations due to weather, mechanical or staffing reasons. I really want a mask sealed test every shift (which is impossible). I am scared to go home, i dont even want to interact with my family. I did my ART this morning because i cant get rid of the fear, and it is negative. Its a relief (50%only) because knowing that ART and PCR accuracy is different. Im going back to work tomorrow and i dont know if i can survive.

I'm an RN with a four year degree. I have never felt that any of my colleagues who didn't have the same background as I did were any less of a nurse for not having it because their experience and continued education would make up the differences between that. But I did get the chance to study and understand the science in-depth that supports the reasons behind why we need public health and how it all comes together.
When I worked in hospitals and in hospice (no longer doing front line nursing after 27 years, in a different aspect with triage and care management) there was always the expectation that to keep your patients safe you had to get certain vaccines and stay up to date on them. Or have titres drawn to prove your immunity.
Like I said, I don't work on the frontlines any more, but I know but I'm incredibly lucky; my employer gave paid time off to get the vaccine, sent us all to work from home early on, and no one who is currently unvaccinated is allowed to return to in-office work. We have been following all CDC guidelines from the start. We're also going to all be tested weekly to monitor for breakthrough cases once we return to the office. Do I like having to be tested weekly? Nope. Will I do it anyway? yup. Because, Science.
That being said, the nurses who refuse to get the vaccine are scaring me. Their ignorance is showing.
I held back on getting my shots initially to MAKE SURE the front line clinicians and medical staff could get theirs first because they needed it more.
Every client I've had to call after they are home from the hospital (or followed while they are in the hospital) since the Delta variant reared its head, has not been vaccinated, while those whom I call after they have a positive COVID test who are at home with mild symptoms have were vaccinated.
I know episodic evidence is not enough, statistics can be manipulated and that correlation is not necessarily causation, but the numbers are adding up day after day.
I also knew taking the vaccine wasn't supposed to fully prevent me from ever getting sick, but make sure my immune system was prepared to fight should it happen. That's how vaccines work!
Thanks for putting the spotlight on the current situation.
All the support and love to my fellow front line medical workers as well- The RT's, PT's, OT's, Nursing assistants and therapy assistants: you rock!! We can't do our jobs without you.

My mom is a registered Critical care nurse, who is pediatric intensive care certified and more. She was working I the COVID unit last year, it got so bad she had to leave, both due to overwhelming work and the disgust at the terrible care of patients. She has an autoimmune deficiency (MS) and STILL got the vaccine. She now works in hospice care and is still overworked but feels a deeper connection to her patients as she helps them and their families process the situation they are in. The company she now works for deeply cares for their patients and the hospital she left could give less than af 😞 My mom works so many hours a week it's INSANE.

I graduated from nursing school in 2019 and so many of the people I graduated with are already burnt out and have either left nursing or become travel nurses. Hospitals won't pay them enough, expect them to work unreasonable hours and take care of way too many patients. Even if you are young and healthy, this should scare you. Nobody is immune to a medical emergency, and your nurse is your last line of defense. What's going to happen when they are also caring for 9 other patients? Mistakes will be made, people will suffer, people will needlessly die. Nurses are human, they can't do it all. They have lives and families too. Nurses, especially new nurses, are being traumatized daily by what they are seeing. They did not sign up for this. I've been staying at home with my daughters since December, and have no intentions of working full time anytime soon.

As an RN and nursing instructor, I want to say thank you for raising awareness about this. Staffing and burnout have been issues since long before the pandemic, but has reached critical levels (and therefore is more noticeable to the public) as nurses experience physical and emotional exhaustion and burnout and witness the pandemic being prolonged and exacerbated by public health research and science being ignored by many members of the public, and in some cases, local and state government.
The rest of the healthcare team is facing this too and should not be forgotten - respiratory therapy, physical, occupational & speech therapy, techs, MDs, NPs & PAs, dietary, housekeeping, engineering, security.
Also, that thing about pizza parties? Absolutely true. And has been a running joke for long time. (Healthcare workers tend to have a dark sense of humor.)
Admin: Great job on winning that national award for nursing excellence!
Staff: Does this mean a raise? Or more staff?
Admin: How about we buy you a pizza?
    Staff: :(
Night shift staff: ....do we get pizza?

I have seen many nurses quit bedside or nursing all together. There have been moments when I feel like I want to quit, but the thought of leaving my friends to fight alone makes my heart break… We have been short staffed for months, and it just keeps getting worse. We have all been picking up extra shifts, working 5 or 6 shifts a week when 3 is the normal for full time. And everyone around me says, “well at least you’re getting overtime pay” but I always have to explain that it’s not about the money (let’s face it, most of it goes to Uncle Sam), it’s about supporting your fellow nurse because you know the struggle and you want to lessen their burden… Thank you, Trevor, for highlighting this very real issue and for making us nurses feel seen 🙏🏼❤️

This shortage, in combination with the already SUPER complicated and overly expensive system, will cause even more people to avoid going to urgent care when they need it, and a whole different wave of deaths will occur because of that. People already avoid the doctor because of costs, let's not make it any harder for the people who can and want to get the care and NEED it. This could be lethal!
Honestly...this country needs better healthcare NOW.

I’ve worked with nurses like this. They’re the ones that think they know more than their entire medical team. Just awful and often bully other workers. It’s unfortunate that of all the times to flaunt their ego they chose to do it now

When compassion fatigue sets in along with the endless feeling of burnout. We nurses and other healthcare workers such as respiratory therapists, CNAs etc, are all getting tired but we still got to do our jobs not just because we signed up for it, but because who else would do it.

      This.
I have long hauler side effects from Covid (I had it last year in Febuary, antigen test proved I had COVID) and I'd rather take the vaccine a dozen more times than experience these symptoms - (constant brain fog, poor memory, constant fatigue and joint pain, insomnia, indegestion for months post-covid, the list goes on). Even if you don't die from covid, you're still likely to have down the road consquences from it. Just get the vaccine people. I had no major health issues, other than my genetic hearing loss pre-covid and it pulled the pin to a cluster bomb of health problems that for all I know, may be permanent.
There's a new strain out that can cause hearing loss aparrently too, and as someone who had bilateral hearing loss from birth you're in for a RUDE surprise trying to get hearing aids under private health insurance (you won't).

If every city had a long funeral dirge that went through half the town or city, the traffic jams might make them aware that people are dying, actually dying. The die hards of the herd, face it that's what they are, will call every hearse a false flag operation, hopefully pushing those jerks back the the fringe.

Burnt out, frustrated, and green pediatric ICU nurse here thank you for this! Thank you for shining a light on this insane crisis. What's even more frustrating is when the hospital you work for claims that there is no staffing shortage. Then it feels even more like a slap in the face. When your employer goes on the news and says that "we are managing just fine" when we are not is demoralizing.

Thank you for explaining about the horrible conditions nurses are working under right now. I’m retired now but remember too many times being forced to work 16 hours in a row (in ICU). Then having 8 hours off before returning for another 8 hour shift. I told managers and supervisors that I felt I was not safe to work after 12 hours and they all ignored me…So glad I’m now retired…Prayers and best wishes for all our health care workers…

We had staffing shortages BEFORE COVID-19. Now…it’s miserable. I used to look forward to going into work. No longer. I’m depressed, and so used up that when I get home to my family, I have almost nothing left to give. I’m a tough cookie, but this is pure trauma. There is so much death. It isn’t just nurses like me that are suffering, either. Aides, techs, respiratory therapists, housekeeping, dietary…everyone has given everything they possess. We’re running on auxiliary power. THIS IS AVOIDABLE! I’ve never been so disappointed with society as I am right now. Imagine if during WW2, half of the country refused to ration and sacrifice? Just completely selfish and callous.
