Paid 300 dollars for a Jersey calf. Grass and hay fed. Spent 60$ on AI.700 hundred for hay and she is still cost effective. Priced out Leerdammer cheese. One wheel worth $192. Making Gouda today. So many questions for you. What is your drying off process? Her first calf is Jersey Angus cross . Calf 's mama has horns. If bred to a Jersey, will that calf have horns or will the Angus gene prevent them?
I love hearing your cost breakdown! So far we have DEFINITELY saved money owning our own cow. Especially since the raw milk for making cheese would cost around $20 per 2 lb wheel! We make it very cheaply, almost free now. Our first calf was Jersey angus cross too! We love that cross and are going to be breeding that heifer this year. It’s possible that a horned calf could sneak through but the polled gene is dominant so I don’t think it would be common for the cross calf to have horns. Neither of ours do so far! If your Jersey cross calf is heterozygous, breeding to another Jersey could result in some polled calves although it’s still only a 50/50 chance.
@@shirleysmith2734 wow I love that! We tried to graft on a Holstein bottle calf we got for $140 but unfortunately it scoured and never recovered 😭 bottle calves are tough. Any tips for grafting?

Bought an older bred 28:19 jersey from dairy. We used her as a surrogate. Never had an issue with her accepting additional caves. Paid $750
That’s great! Wow what a good price. When was that?
@@TheHenTwins been a few years ago. I also bought a Holstein heifer calf for $150 and my jersey raised her like her own calf. We are in east Texas
