Bulk chicken feed and water system
The ultimate goal for this Chicken Coop / Rabbitry / Raken House is for it to be as self sustainable as possible. The first step is putting in bulk feeders and waterers especially for the poultry. I will upload a separate video for the Rabbit watering system.

Timed AI with our Family Milk Cow
มุมมอง 13014 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Although breeding with OvSynch or Timed AI wasn't our preferred method, it was required this past season due to lack of heat signs and other cattle to help us know when our cow was cycling. This is how we did it along with our beloved AI Tech and her expertise. Jersey calf loading for Spring 2025!
DIY Rabbit Hay Rack
มุมมอง 111วันที่ผ่านมา
On our homesteads, we don't like to waste materials so we used the leftover wire cutouts from making doorways on our rabbit cages to make small hay feeder racks for each rabbit. This only took a few minutes and minimal supplies. For each rack we used a 10 to 12 inch square piece of 1 x 2 inch wire and a few J clips (and J clip pliers) that are cheap and easy to find. Where do you store buttermilk? Fridge? How long?
In the fridge or freezer! It depends on how fresh your cream was when you made the butter, but for us, around a week in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer.
What about freezing water in winter
That is currently my biggest project! I’m planning to add a drip valve to the end that can be turned on or off and then some kind of circulator or solar heater in the bucket itself. We have mild winters but are currently hauling water to the animals to avoid these pipes bursting. We’ll be uploaded a video as soon as I perfect the winterizing!
Cute babies ❤❤❤
Thank you!! We agree 😊🥰
Paid 300 dollars for a Jersey calf. Grass and hay fed. Spent 60$ on AI.700 hundred for hay and she is still cost effective. Priced out Leerdammer cheese. One wheel worth $192. Making Gouda today. So many questions for you. What is your drying off process? Her first calf is Jersey Angus cross . Calf 's mama has horns. If bred to a Jersey, will that calf have horns or will the Angus gene prevent them?
I love hearing your cost breakdown! So far we have DEFINITELY saved money owning our own cow. Especially since the raw milk for making cheese would cost around $20 per 2 lb wheel! We make it very cheaply, almost free now. Our first calf was Jersey angus cross too! We love that cross and are going to be breeding that heifer this year. It’s possible that a horned calf could sneak through but the polled gene is dominant so I don’t think it would be common for the cross calf to have horns. Neither of ours do so far! If your Jersey cross calf is heterozygous, breeding to another Jersey could result in some polled calves although it’s still only a 50/50 chance.
You don't THINK it's humane, but you've never done it or seen it done. It takes a little practice to get it right, and there were will definitely be some losses during the learning curve. But, done properly, there is seldom much reaction on the part of the cockerel, and they're back to normal activity in no time. Once the small area is plucked, the skin is slid over before incision is made. When released, the skin slides back to cover the incision, the cut through skin and the cut through flesh don't line up, so there is no opening to abdominal cavity. Post-op infection is rare. The procedure is certainly more humane and respectful than throwing unwanted cockerels in the grinder, and the resultant meat is outstanding.
I have been bouncing a rabbitry set up around and went back to Joel Salatins and was reminded of this set up and then your video was on my recommended. I love this setup and pretty sure this is what we will be setting up shortly.
That’s awesome! I’m glad you found our video and like the setup, it is working great for us so far! Soon I’ll be adding a video to show what further modifications we have made to make it even more self sustainable. I love it!
😂😂😂😂 I love the authenticity!!!! Thanks for sharing the raw story with the ups and downs.
Glad you enjoyed it! We enjoyed telling the story hahaha
Nice video i like it
Thanks for watching!

What did you get for your birthday? Work... more work.
Hahaha true. It was still the best birthday present I’ve gotten though
amazing colour from beta carotene in the grass fed jersey cow wish i could find raw milk for sale around here but its not legal greetings from toronto
You don’t get any better than that fresh and raw Jersey cream! Our butter looks like cheese! I’m so glad it’s legal here in South Carolina, although there are many restrictions and public opinion still isn’t positive yet. Did you grow up drinking raw milk?
@@TheHenTwins my grandparents had a dairy farm many years ago and when visiting, we would always take fresh raw milk back home with us to drink, make cheese and make butter with the scooped cream off the top
Good work, but I would spend a little bit more and put a row of 1/2 inch hardware cloth along the entire bottom of the pen. Small animals like rats and minks can get in through the chicken wire and kill all of your animals. Larger animals like raccoons and coyotes can chew the wire as well. They did it to mine, I learned the hard way.
Thanks for the tip! We will definitely consider that for future updates!! How have you set yours up now to protect from predators?
@@TheHenTwins I did like I said, I put an extra row of hardware cloth all along the bottom of the chicken run and door, right on top of the chicken wire. I also placed old, used bricks on the outside to discourage digging.
@@eternalmistress I did my small coop laying the hardware cloth first on the ground and then building up like if it were a rabbit cage and then built the framing around it for support, etc. They're completely enclosed. Only had one small rat get in from the top and the rooster kung fu'd it out of existence - once in it couldn't get out! LOL!
@@GlobalMycbhNetwork If I were to build another one, I would do the same. Who knew that chickens loved to dig also! I was nervous many times that they were helping the predators, lol.
That's smart, I may work on that next.
This video caught my attention because a friend of mine has chickens, turkeys and rabbits and the birds pretty much have open access to the rabbitry. The turkeys sleep on top of the rabbit cages and the chickens probably do too. The results is that the rabbits and their feed get pooped on all night long and whenever the birds want to fly up there and roost. Cage cleaning is a frequent chore and I personally don't like the risk of sickness for the rabbits - I have lost most of my herd there. He's not following any method so I am not critiquing based on his experience, but it sounds like a good idea otherwise. OH ok, I see that it is abutted to the roof. Since you are reducing the actual square footage of rabbit living space, some may deem it a bit restricting. I would recommend a higher front 36 inches and 24 inches for the back to give the rabbits a bit more space especially for the does.
Totally! We are always learning and adjusting our designs as we go! Yeah my number one desire was to avoid birds roosting on too of the cages so that’s why I went with a sloped build. I did them this high because lower the birds may be tempted to jump up and peck at the rabbits especially kits. I totally get the space issue though and that’s what I’m going to be watching closely. Thanks for watching and I’d love to hear how you’ve set yours up!
Love from dubai❤
Thanks! Much love!
good work
Thank you!!
Kutu 🥰
He’s my favorite too!
They are adorable 😊
Not sure I would have shown this. They are such fragile birds health wise. Wet bedding...
They had to be kept in the trailer due to hurricane helene. It was an emergency situation- not ideal, but better than drowning in their tractor. Before the flooding (and now) they are on lush grass and moved daily.
Hello can you make a full video about cow milking by bucket milking machine please. That woulden be nice❤
Yes we are working on that!!

I love beef and im sure as hell not vegan. But I know for a fact I could not raise something that freaking cute...and eat it later. I'll leave the meat farming to you. When you want to trade some veggies and fruit for a steak, let me know 😂
It will be hard, for sure! But we just keep reminding ourselves that our job is to give them the best life possible before they are slaughtered. It’s the blessing and curse of growing your own meat. But it gives us a greater appreciation for what’s on our plates.
Congratulations Paprika 🎉
What do you use it for? I am not quite fond of the taste of pumpkin but if need be id eat it. Good to have recipes eh?
I pureed it and used some in a pumpkin whoopie pies recipe and then froze the rest!
Was that calf limping?
Or just new at walking?
The farmer told us he had a difficult labor and had to be pulled. He was 3 weeks when we got him and walked like that the entire time. Our pastures have holes from being an old peach tree orchard so we talked to the farmer and he let us trade him out for a stronger calf. We suspect it could’ve been white muscle disease or injury from being pulled.
Scaredy cow!
The girl who insists shes tiny would probably tell you that is a giraffe you have on lead and a buffalo walking away.
Looks like a wolfhound....
Did you literally name your cow suet? 😂😂😂😂
The calf is thinking "Whoa the closer this creature comes towards me the bigger he gets. WHOA I was right. Hoppin horny toads I'm gettin' outa here. "
New here- what breed of dog is that
That's an Irish Wolfhound. I believe they are the biggest dogs .. but I might be wrong
Irish wolfhound for sure
Yes! @clairereynolds8583 and @michaelametty8809 are both correct. He is an Irish Wolfhound which is the tallest breed on average! He is currently 36.5 inches at the shoulder.
Hey! Who's that? Hell naw... I'm outta here!😉
Collect em, wash em, dry em, stick em in a pillow. Down!
Suet. 😂
Hell yeah! Love that breed.

Looks like the bull is being torture
It's not
It’s a heifer, and she’s not don’t worry, it’s not pierced, just a soft clamp and it doesn’t poke her at all. It’s made to poke the mom who then won’t let the calf nurse. The doesn’t feel it
@@TheHenTwins thanks for explaining they should know it's not torture but instead something that has to be done sometimes💗👍😁
@@BaileyM-1 that’s right!
What are those spikes on the nose ring for?
Calf to big and it’s still getting milk from mom when it’s already older like if you where 7-9 drinking Brest milk still so the spike make the mom cow not let the calf get milk from the udder
