    Some interesting facts:
    1. Geddy Lee's, (Gary), parents were Holocaust survivors and survived Auschwitz death camp.
    2. Alex Lifeson and Geddy were childhood friends and have been playing together since they were teenagers.
    3. Neil Peart is not the original drummer. (but we're all glad he came along).

    Rush's recording career ran from 1974 to 2012. In 2015, the band retired due in large part to Neil Peart's health issues. This video was done for the 40th anniversary re-release of the Permanent Waves album, and shouts out radio programmers that got the band airplay along the way.

    "GLITTERING PRIZES AND ENDLESS COMPROMISES, SHATTER THE ILLUSION OF INTEGRITY!" The key line in say FU to the music industry that originally tried to get them to put out commercial shit! They always did it their way!!!

      FOR REAL!

    • @alukuhito
      @alukuhito 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It means that even in their own music, they have to make endless compromises. We sit here thinking it's an integral song, but we're just hearing the end product. It's not as easy as we think it is. Neil doesn't just come in and play the drums and tell the others to play what he wants them to play, for example. They all come together and have to make compromises. That's the way groups make songs. And didn't you watch this video? It's practically an ad. They're advertising the radio stations and people that helped them become a commercial success. They are very grateful for the music industry.

    • @rogerwest603
      @rogerwest603 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @wiseonelol25
      @wiseonelol25 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alukuhito 1 problem with your theory - 'shatter the illusion of integrity'! you're probably right in one respect - they're grateful for the support they DID get, but that one line seems to acknowledge the fact that the industry wants artists to follow orders! It was also an era where 'payola' was big in the radio industy - favours and money for getting artists on the air! Lot's of behind the scenes bullshit going on everyday!!

    • @alukuhito
      @alukuhito 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wiseonelol25 That doesn't really pose a problem to my interpretation, as those words are exactly what I was basing my interpretation on. You're there listening to a song and enjoying it, but you're not realizing all of the compromises that the individual musicians must necessarily make to create a song together. It sounds like it's an integral piece of work, yet it's really about three guys with different ideas, trying to make them work together, compromising. When you see it that way, you break down the integrity of the song, which is just an illusion.

    Thanks so much for appreciating RUSH. They are the pride and joy of Canada. Their career spanded from 1969 till just a short while ago when the drummer Neil Peart passed away ( as you see at the very end of this video) . Neil is considered by many to be the greatest drummer who ever lived ( I have seen them in concert many times and agree). The drummer Neil passed away earlier this year, and this video is a tribute to the the years the band spent together. A lot of “easter eggs” in the video. Including the “rising sun” and “red barchetta”, references to other songs. Also references to the people in the music industry that supported them. Keep digging, they are the best in my opinion. This song is about how free radio back in the 60's 70's, & 80's brought people together and joy but eventually "radio" sold out to be more commercial.
    As for the "video" it shows how rush was discovered by a female DJ/station manager in Cleveland and took a chance on a long song (working man) and it so happens that a BIG New York DJ heard rush and played them also. And the rest is HISTORY.

    The song isn’t so much about uplifting radio as it is anti-commercialization of music. Radio tends to stifle the wider spectrum of music and stunts appreciation musical awareness. So I guess this so is more about the listener breaking away from the radio format? The brilliance of their talent is at times a distraction from Neil’s amazing lyrical abilities.

    This video was done as a history of Rush but more to the point, a tribute to the late, great Neil Peart, the amazing drummer and lyricist of Rush. Neil had died of brain cancer, and it struck the entire musical community of fans and artist like a 20 ton boulder. People were crying for days or weeks. This video has so much that people listening to Rush for decades, as well as new fans can relate to.

    Imagine being a 15 year old kid who's never been to a concert before and you're older neighbor at about 5 in the evening asks if you'd like to go with a bunch of other guys to a general admission concert to see a band called Rush and you've never heard of them before. Of course I begged my mother to go, I was allowed to go and the rest is history they became my favorite band instantly. It was the Permanent Waves tour with Spirit of Radio just blowing me away. How could three people put out that much quality sound it was just amazing to me. Stage presence for each was amazing.

    Rush started out as an amature band in 1968, signed to mercury records in 1974, and lasted the next 43 years. They only had one line up change which was the drummer which the original drummer never made it to the first tour. They have 19 gold and platinum studio albums, a star on the hollywood walk of fame, tock and roll hall of fame, and canadian music hall of fame.

    The transitions in this song is the sound effect of turning the radio dial to a different station. THAT'S why there are so many different sounds. Back in the day, we had to manually turn the dial to get to the next station. Hence, the different sounds. You should react to Red Barchetta. They actually make the sound of a car in the middle of the song and remember, there are only 3 members in this great group.
