    I’ve shot a sten before. Sure it’s a pretty basic weapon, and it’s only 9mm but it’s still an effective weapon in the right hands. It will kill you dead just as fast as any modern sub machine gun.

    She talks about the 9mm like its a toy. That paper would have stopped any pistol caliber round roughly within the same area the 9mm stopped and even an intermediate rifle round wouldn't have went through all the sheets. Standard FMJ round might penetrate more than a hollow point but still dump their energy within the target after hitting due to lead being soft. There are 9mm rounds that penetrate armor with the use of different metals.

    The Sten Gun was an emergency Sub Machine. As the UK was getting Thompson's from the US up until December 1941 and we know what happened that month. The US needed the Thompson's from then on in. So back in Blighty (UK) a replacement was needed very quickly and the Sten was born courtesy of a toy company. It was used as Churchill said " To Set Europe Ablaze " by the Resistance. 9mm the calibre used in the Sten also in the German MP40, so more common in Occupied Europe than 45 cal.

    I used a Sterling quite a few times. For one thing, you do not empty the mag in one go. You fire in four to five rounds at a time. Reason is all Sterlings pull up to the right. Firing four to five rounds stitches a 45 degree pattern on the target.

    I trained with sten guns in 68 Canadian navy. But we held them differently. Left arm under magazine, then up on top of the front of the gun. First time I saw one was my instructor standing behind us at the range. His instructions were anyone who dared to turn around with a loaded gun saying something stupid like my weapon is jammed, would instantly be shot.

    It's not a MK4. We use the designation No4 which the has additional MKs within itself. Also the pitcher of the bloke charging has an SMLE/No1 rifle. Unfortunately some time between the war the British military changed its designation for it service rifles so it can be confusing.

    Looks like you had some fun. Some people don't realise having a blast is fun.
    If you think of the Sten and Sterling as personal weapons over say a pistol then they are a lot better than any handgun. With minimum training anyone can hit something with one. Thats what was needed in 1939/40.
    The Sterling is quite a refined gun, and get to know one not much you can't hit with one out to 200m. Easy to single tap and walk onto the target. As reliable and soldier proof as any AK; just a 9mm which is at best adequate. Big reliable magazine which was a plus.
    I loved shooting them when I was serving. I'd have one over a Grease Gun.

  • @rrshowtime3900
    @rrshowtime3900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It seems many US people like to slag the STEN off. It may not be the quality of a Thompson but we could have 4 stens for the same price and cheaper lighter ammo.
    9mm is just as good as .45 if not better.. If 9mm wasn't better it wouldn't still be the most popular SMG and handgun calibre in the world would it?
    The Sterling is also a superior SMG to the M3 Grease gun. No.4 Rifle was superior to the Springfield too. (Which was a Mauser copy)
    Prove any of that wrong.

    On both the Sten and the Sterling you should *clear* the weapon first and make sure the bolt is *forward* before you insert a mag!! In fact the same rule applies to the Bren gun as well.

    • @Geordun
      @Geordun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jim Man Yes , I was sometime issued one when serving in the Royal Engineers.There are two points you may have overlooked,
      1/ While it is possible to put 32 rounds in the mag the recommend load was 30 to avoid damaging the spring.
      2/The "safety slot" is there so you may "Cock, *Hook*, Look." while clearing any jams/misfires.
      Unless you have instant need to fire the weapon, the weapon should be in the "Made Safe" mode.(This rule applies to all "blowback" (open bolt) weapons in the British Army.

    Just a perspective, but coming off those landing craft (mentioned in the intro) was an assault action. Submachinegun or carbine makes perfectly good sense. It's not like they were going to stay on the beach engaging the defenders at range. Only two kinds of people stayed on the beach during the assault...

    A comment about the Vickers..after WW2 the British Government had something in the order of 5 million .303 rounds left over and were in the process of changing to 7.62mm rounds so rather than strip them down a single Vickers was set up and the whole stock of .303 ammunition was fired through that one gun without and failure or problem ..amazing ..I trained on the SMG (Sterling) in 1971-74 and was made to shoot it right handed (the cases would hit you in the face if you shot left handed)which was for me a nightmare but when told to shoot full auto from the hip I was allowed to shoot it left handed with a far better success.

    What's wrong with going into battle with a 9mm smg? CQC with a 9mm SMG especially in WW2 was effective up to 50 yards of accuracy. 9mm is used by NATO forces and the Russians have developed very powerful 9 x 19mm rounds that penetrate armor.

If she fired them correctly maybe she would put more rounds on target instead of looking like she has just understood what a firearm is?

    The Sterling sub machine gun never had a “Groove” at the back to lock the cocking handle into or to use as a safety. There was a safety lever situated on the left hand side of the the pistol grip. The weapon they use in the video is not an original Sterling and also never spray oil down the barrel of a gun before firing it.

    • @SvenTviking
      @SvenTviking 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Curtis It will “diesel” and possibly burst the barrel.

    • @jimir68
      @jimir68 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To confirm what Sven said, oil in the barrel will increase barrel pressure which could lead to a bulged barrel. On a more light hearted side the smoke from the oil when you fire the gun will give your position away to snipers in the woods(-:

On retirement , my grandpa alongwith other V Force soldiers were given a British made civilian gun ( 12 bore gun or a muzzle loader) of which they can chose from alongwith blackpowder , a primer cap, a large chunk of lead and ...a military medal. Just subbed seems like a good channel, but a bit more historical research is needed, I realise the sten and the stirling have the same basic shape but you keep mixing them up, it was the sten that was widely used in WW2, it used the same ammo as the MP40 and could use the same magazines which made it ideal for resistance fighters, it was light, easily broken down to hide and was easy and cheap to make, bicycle shops could make them, so all in all a good weapon

    Sterling was (as you probably know) a cold war era weapon and used by Uk upto the early 1990's, when it was replaced by the SA80.

    It is a Sterling. it was a development of the Patchet. I carried one from 1980 until it was replaced by the 5.56 mm Diemaco C8 in the early 90s (The Canadian version of the excellent M4 carbine)

    Picks up a weapon and fails to check that the breach is clear at 2:26, 3:15 & 6:22. Then, outside to the jeep and all the support weapons etc. At this point, I left the post, I couldn't bare to watch the "poor range-discipline" that would inevitable follow; how many deaths from firearms in the USA?

    When I did training on the Sterling in the 60s, the weapon instructor said, theoretical if a man was wearing a heavy overcoat 100 yards away then the bullets wouldn't penetrate, then he added, personally I wouldn't like to be the guy wearing the overcoat!

    I think she needs to listen a bit more, The Sterling was NOT WW2. Just a short note on the .303, A well trained riflemen,can get off 48 rounds a minute. Not bad for a bolt action, and another reason it'way better than the 98K.

      What made the 303 such a great rifle is that it only had a 60 degree bolt turn and a short bolt throw allowing very quick cycling of the bolt. The bolt could be worked without moving your head out of the way and cycling the bolt didnt block your veiw of the sights meaning you didnt loose target acquisition every time you cycled the bolt. Closing the bolt positioned your finger perfectly for pulling the trigger. Plus it had a 10 round magazine. These factors combined to give it the best firepower of any bolt action rifle. I think that 36 rounds fired in a minute is the highest documented amount but 15 well aimed shots in a minute was what the british army expected its infantrymen to achieve. This is why the british stuck with a bolt action rifle for longer than many other countries.
      Mauser type actions are stronger and more accurate But the 303 was strong enough, accurate enough and it allowed a very rapid rate of aimed fire.

    We trained on the Sterling in the Canadian Reserves. Nice & light, fun to shoot. They pop up in several older James Bond movies when the "good guys" are attacking the villian's lair.

      I 1st saw the C1 smg when in the militia playing war games. I was aware of the sten and thought the compact C1 was pretty cool. 4 of us were ambushed with blanks while walking down a road.

    Ok that was a bit contrived, asking IF he has a Sten or Sterling machine gun in his inventory.
    I've never met the guy & I would imagine that it's easier to ask what he DOESN'T have in stock.

    The British don’t still use .303. Like all NATO countries, our standard issue assault rifle (L85A2/3) is chambered for 5.56x45.

      Hmm, L96 is a ground-up design from the 1980s. L42 which preceded it was No.4 based, albeit a 7.62 variant thereof, and lingered on in second-line roles into the 1990s - the last Enfield in UK service. No .303 since the 1960s though.
      (India still makes use of a lot of 7.62 Ishapore Enfields, though even these are on their way out.)

    At 10,10 I think the trigger on sten is in pulled position ,the trigger return spring is probably stretched or about to break. The lady only pulled bolt out of safety slot and it functioned.
