      @SMOKEY the M60 was a good weapon, I don't know too much about it though. Can it fire from the open and closed bolt position? Can it fire semi or full auto. The MG42 can and is an extremely versatile MG that still holds up very well today
      The M240 and M249 are open bolt firing weapons that can only fire full auto. Good general purpose MGs but were designed to outfit a larger military to keep cost down.
      The MG the germans currently use are way ahead of are MGs.

    • @Oscar-fi1ev
      @Oscar-fi1ev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @SMOKEY Yup, much easier to handle a slower rate of fire too and follow your trace. M60/M240 rate of fire is ideal. Always thought the M249s were too fast.

    • @Oscar-fi1ev
      @Oscar-fi1ev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfair comparison. M60 was more often used as a SAW while the MG42 was a GP MG and always bipod/tripod. Different purpose, different era.

      I am Vietnamese, I know many American soldiers died in my country, but many Vietnamese died in the Vietnam War, an estimated 3 million Vietnamese died. My uncle served for the Vietnam People's Army (North Vietnamese Army), who had just lost a leg contaminated with Agent Orange from American aircraft. Now he has a disabled son. I do not want to tell the past, but you should remember that not only have Americans sacrificed in the war, but the Vietnamese also sacrificed even a lot of people.

Yes, there were problems with the early M-16's and lives were probably lost because of them malfunctioning. However, they continued to improve the design and lubrication. When I arrived in mid-1969, we had M-16's in my unit and they functioned well.

      Robert S - I recall that there were congressional hearings in 1967 over the new weapon. A number of GIs testified that up to ONE-HALF of overrun positions, with disassembled M-16s by their fighting positions, were discovered. That was horrifying to hear, & I've never forgotten that. Yes, the M-16 did receive improvements, but it was entirely understandable for a trooper to grab any weapon that would fire in order to save his life. It's chilling to realize that those young guys were trying to clear the jams in their rifles while being attacked.

The reliability issues of the early XM16E1 rifles were to due to not only the lack of cleaning kits (like you mentioned), but also the lack of a chromed barrel primarily the powder used in the 5.56 ammo the troops were issues. This powder was NEVER tested with rifle and was not designed to be used through it, and fouled up the gun extremely quickly, causing the jamming issues. The improved M16A1 (which, ironically, is the one he was showing), which had a chrome lined barrel/chamber, and was issued with a cleaning kit and the PROPER non-fouling ammunition, worked perfectly fine and eliminated all the reliability issues the old ones had.
      Ironically, the close tolerances and closed design of the M16 make it LESS susceptible to mud and grime than the AK, as countless mud tests have proven. The issues with the M16 were because of shady political decisions by military and Colt higher-ups, not the rifle itself.

    The M16 jammed because of tight tolerances? No. It had issues initially because they shipped them over with untested ammunition and no cleaning kits. Once those issues were resolved it became an excellent weapon. The AR platform is a very well sealed system and actually performs better in mud/dirt tests than an AK, check out the tests from inRange.
    The AK and M-16 had very distinct sounds, so picking up an AK and using it is an excellent way to draw fire from other US forces and get yourself killed.

      yeah, the part that he says about the m16 he is just pulling shit out of his butt, a soldier unless he was special forces would never be able to just get a ak and use it through his tour of duty, his Lt or sergeant would chew the ass off of a soldier for being out of regulations with the kit and also he would have to pack some ak ammo from the VC bodies after the combat or otherwise he would be pretty low on ammo during patrol and in no way to interchange ammo with his buddys in the platoon. Oh and also im pretty sure most VCs where using chinese AKs or AKMs. And the M14 part, that rifle also had problems and at the ranges that most of the engagements in Vietnam took place, you are really better off with the 556, especially when using dull auto. this guy sound like a tool. The best part is that his "great" vietnam war display dosnt have anything from the ANZAC or all the other nations that fought in that war, and nice US centralization of the "vietnam war" also called the 2nd Vietnam War, because fuck the french and their first indochina war or the third indochina war, those are not the "vietnam war" (sarcasm)

    • @Ruggz1515

      Kamil k The problems that plagued the M16 were not only ammo related but also, environmentally related. The issues with the M16 were not that it wasn't 'reliable', but troops had considered it not robust enough to deal with the constant pressures of it being in the field of Vietnam - constant downpour of rain, muddy conditions, dirt, dust, silt, small rocks, banging against objects, high humidity and above all perhaps - sustained shooting in heavy combat firefights after enduring all the conditions mentioned above

    The early XM16E1's and 604's (first issued M16's in Vietnam) failed for many reasons, but mud exposure and tight tolerances were not usually the reasons. The early ammunition was changed to use the faster-burning stick powder instead of the correct ball powder, this would lead to a faster rate of fire which would over-run the firearm and cause double-feeds, jams and hammer follow. Also, the early edgewater buffers were too light and were prone to breaking, which would also lead to bolt carrier bounce. Furthermore, neither the chamber, nor the bore were chrome lined intially... This, along with not supplying cleaning kits, would lead to sever jamming issues, including casings getting stuck in the chamber and destroying the extractors. This is why you can see early photos of soldiers with improvised rods (and later, cleaning rods) taped to the handguards of their rifles so they could be used quickly to clear jams by pushing out casings from the muzzle end. Also, the M16 was never made of Zytel or plastic. The barrels and BCG's were steel and the receiver halves were made from 7075 aircraft grade aluminum. The stocks and handguards were first made from Fiberite and later from polymer.

    My only complaint is the misconceptions about the m16 rifle and AK /AK-m rifles.
    The m16 has a sealed system that doesn't really allow verdigris to get into it, only the fire control group is suseptible to mud...ect through the trigger slot.
    The reason they had problems with them is because some idiots back in Washington decided to switch gunpowder loads in the ammo in an attempt to boost velocities and Because the government had the false belief that they didn't need cleaning.
    Once they got rid of the ammo with it's dirty burning powder, issued cleaning kits with an instructional comic booklet, and made a minor change to the coating of a certain part inside the gun, they worked great.
    in theory the AK / AK-M rifle platform may have more clearance for verdigris and stuff inside the action, but this means nothing when it's so easy for it to get in there. All it takes is one grain that's a little too big to get in there and seize up the whole thing.
    I can certainly understand the feelings towards the M-16 when so many lives we're lost, though it wasn't the guns fault but the fault of some idiots in Washington making decisions they didn't have the firearms knowledge to be making.

      The powder used in the field was from the Second World War, (most for a 30-06)..and the barrels were not chrome lined. The British learned to chrome line their rifles when they were fighting in India. The Chinese chrome lined their AK47s and SKS, which made them even better... even the Soviets didn’t chrome line their barrels... once we made chrome lined barrels and manufactured powder to AR Stoners specifications, the M16 became a pretty awesome rifle...

    The M16 didn’t always jam because of the tolerances, it Jammed because the military were a bunch of stuck up pricks who didn’t want to use a plastic rifle. They used improper ammunition contrary to what Eugene Stoner designed the rifle to fire. The testing that the AR 15 underwent For military use was closely observed by Eugene Stoner. The rifle was tested in extreme conditions in several locations with minimal issues thus leading to it being adopted into military use. However the military ignored Stoner’s advice and used improper ammunition as well as falsely informing the GIs that these rifles required no cleaning. So, These rifles did not fail, it was the incompetence of the leaders as well as their inability to read the damn users manual that got those boys killed.
    God bless and long live the Republic.

    Tiger stripe was a locally produced pattern. Not in the US inventory. Its why so many more ARVN were issued with it and you only really saw US special forces wearing it. US patterns were the leaf pattern so common on helmet covers, the "Duck Hunter" pattern, so named because it had been discontinued and much of what the MACV SOG guys had was bought privately and the early woodland style that is on the mannequin.
