I've worn a bunch of shoes for alot of reasons and i found your reviews 100 percent on point. Lone peak 6 were my fav but mont blanc is doing it great for hiking now
Great line up! I personally have enjoyed those green Timps and Olympus 4’s the most. I’m really looking forward to the Olympus 5’s and Mont Blanc boa . Great vids, enjoy them all!
Thanks Traildawg, much appreciated. I am actually getting to like the T4 more now .. but still mainly use the MB … cutting through them pretty quickly!
Another great Altra video James! Im currently really enjoying my Altra Olympus 4's. Coming from barefoot shoes I am really appreciating that extra cushioning! I'm still wearing barefoot shoe, just not running in them. I'm sure you are going to love the mount blanc Boa's!

Great Video, I just ordered a pair of Timp 4's - coming from Lone Peaks - Needed something more cushioned for longer runs. Excited to put in some miles!
What a quality collection James. You can see how much you love Altra. The Monte Blanc Boa does look really cool. I hope you can get your hands on a pair. Keep dropping these quality vids mate! 😎🤘🏻
Thanks Ben… I think I will definitely be one of the first to get the boa, mainly due to the fact the MB has had some many dislikes, the boa might not be in such demand
I copied your updates (tongue and laces) on the Monte Blanc’s before my first run, which was 30km. It was fine and the heel didn’t worry me as I used ankle lock. Overall a solid shoe that was overhyped and the heel slippage gave the opportunity to give it a good kicking. Thanks for the videos.
I'm an old geezer who loves my Altras. I have owned 11 pairs over the years. I do very little running these days but I average 5 miles/day hiking. Right now my favorite (this far) is the Olympus 4. My old feet appreciate the the extra cushion. When the snow is deep I wear the Lone Peak mid height hiker. Last winter over 100 miles snowshoeing. The outer sole is even forgiving to my recreational snowshoes. Altras are the best trail skies I've ever owned.
Great to hear Bill… i truly feel the same. No other shoe company quite feels the same - and trust me, I have tried them all… currently on my second pair of Mont Blancs and now looking at the boa version.
Brilliant stuff, thanks. Makes you realise though how everyone will have a slightly different take on the same shoes. Feet, they’re so complicated eh 👍🦄🏴
Great video James. In all my trying for other zero drop, wide toe box shoes I haven't been able to find anything that is as comfortable as the Lone Peak. I haven't tried the LP6 since I was frustrated with the durability of my 4s and 4.5s, but I think I may need to give them a go. Great video!
Lonepeak 6 does seem like a baller shoe James, I can see why you love it so much. Timp 4 is still may favorite colorway. KMT def has the grip and tread that I would love, to bad they discontinued it. Side note, I would have loved to see some b-roll of each shoe.
Great video, James! Hard to believe you have so many miles on the MB! My current favorite shoe is the Superior 5! The upper is softer and the fit is better than the 4.5! The midsole is a tad bit softer too. I think it's the same midsole compound but holding both shoes you can tell it's softer. I just recently decided I'm going to start my upcoming 50-miler in them. Bought the MB for this race but they just don't have the flexibility, lockdown, and responsiveness of the superior. I am biased though since I run mostly in barefoot shoes!
Might have to try the superior 5, they look cool - pretty slick. Yup, must be 200 miles in MB, been using it for most of my runs … wearing as I type this ! Thanks Daniel for the feedback
Fantastic overview video james. Like you I’ve been a big fan of the lone peaks. I originally tried the lp 4’s but jumped to inov-8’s terraultra g 270 as they mentioned having a wide toe box…Unfortunately not like altra’s though! I the watched your video about the lone peak all WTHR. They were superb, especially for places like the Lake District. They had to 400/500 miles before falling to bits. I’m currently using the lp 6’s. They’re fantastic also, but longevity the all wthr’s are winning. They do dry very quickly though. This video has tempted me to try the olympus range now 👍🏻
Great resource, this video, as I'm considering transitioning to altra as the fit of my slightly flat and wide feet is really good in them! I'm think I'd like to try a pair of LP and Olympus as I'm mainly into ultra marathons.
@@movemorenowjames Thanks. Researching this subject now, I find many people recommend actually transitioning through using barefoot shoes, both in daily life and in run training, in order to really start engaging all those hibernating muscles in the foot, which would be helpful especially when having deveoped a low arch. Of course you'd be doing this very carefully, but still, an interesting idea that I might give a go alongside doing the Altra for the longer stuff. Is this something you have considered or tried?
James. The inov8 Terraultra G 270 is zero drop and is supposedly on inov8's widest last. I've been tempted to dive in as I don't get the magic of the Lone Peak that others do but love most of the Altra road shoes. I have my eye on the outroad as canal toe paths are my closest "trails"
Thanks John, I know the g270 is a great shoe, tried it but just not quite wide enough or accommodating enough upfront … it’s a good one though. The Outroad, that’s the one, looks good 👍
I love altras but didn't really get on with the lone peak 4.5 or 5.. current favorite is the superior 5, loved the timp 2 and Olympus 4. The mont blanc are very cool too..I just can't get the lone peak to fit right in any size or lacing.
I can't bring myself to invest in the Superior even though it is very interesting to me, it just seems dated. I'm also one of the Altra people that does enjoy the Rivera which the Outroad is apparently based on.
@@SpikeBrookes87 outdated in terms of the shoe market, yes. I think the superior is functionally still relevant. The more built up the shoe is the more potential of it affecting your gate and footstrike. I wear barefoot shoes often for foot strength and better movement mechanics and the superior impedes on this two variables a lot less than, say the Olympus - which I love too. It's nice to have all ranges. My trail shoes range from 7mm stack to 33mm 😄
@@Dan_South the Superior interests me for similar reasons. For instance basically all my casual shoes are Vivobarefoot and even ran in them a bit. One of the things I don't like about the Lone Peak 5 is that it feels very firm for its stack height. Back to the Superior I also don't relish the idea of needing to find the right size in yet another Altra model.
Great comparison video James. I’m a big Altra fan too as I use mine for hiking. I’ve got the Lone Peak 5 and Olympus 4. The Olympus is is outstanding and my go to shoe for long distances. If the Olympus 5 is an improvement, then I can’t wait. Assuming you’ll get a pair when they are released and share your thoughts on here 😉
Thanks Anthony, yes I no doubt will be buying a pair just to see and feel the difference… the Olympus is a solid shoe without many issues , big fan …. Thanks for the feedback
Great video, I had the superior and Timp 2 both of which were great but did fall apart a little too soon. Since I’ve gone for the Inov8 Terraultra 270, still zero drop and fairly wide toe box (not Altra wide) but still pretty good. Feels so good underfoot, built like a tank, and grip is top notch. Could do with a more padded is my only gripe. Might be worth a look.
Charles thanks, I did try the terra ultra 270 but annoyingly not quite enough forgiving space upfront - really wanted to like the shoe as it is indeed a good one!
I hope you get your hands on the new Altra Outroad when it comes out...I really want to hear your review. It's a shoe I definitely want to get my hands on. Looks like a LP/Timp hybrid.
I love the timp 3s. I got a pair of the 4s my only complaint is the insole. Got really bad hot spots on my feet’s. The insole material seems a lil abrasive. Anyone have the same issues ?
Those green TIMP 4 remind me of a dragon. They even seem to have scaly patterns on the upper and midsole. If they do a pair that can breathe fire to clear nettles and brambles as you run, sign me up!
Excellent Review and couldn’t agree more on “why?!” They got rid of the King MT 2! Superior has been my “workhorse” for many years now. I hope they give the next Superior model the more responsive midsole. Thanks for taking the time to detail out the trail line-up. I’ll be forwarding this vid to folks who ask about trail shoe recommendations. Do you wear injinji socks in your Altra’s? Also, what’s the longest you’ve run in your Lone Peaks?
Hi, thanks Alex. Actually just finished a nice run in the king MT2s, great shoe. The longest I have run in the LPs is 45 miles , last October- a trail ultra (came in top 10 which was nice)
The Timp 4 would have been a great shoes but they decided to have wholes in midsole. Also, I got the outsole torn in 3 places after my first 50k in mix terrain. The rubber on the outsole is paper thin. Not sure what happened with the Olympus but I get a blister on my pinky. Did not have a problem with the old Olympus. King MT is one of the best mud and snow shoe. Sorry to see it go :(. Great video and very useful for anyone buying Altra!
Thanks Robert; yup. Sad to see the old king mt go. I very rarely use my timp 4 - just not quite right ..: loving the MB though - although the outsole really doesn’t last that long
Solid overview here James. You really are Mr Altra! Looking to invest in some Altras at some point to try them out but hoping they keep some wide for my flipper feet.
Hi James, enjoyed the video, thanks. I am looking at the LP5/6 and the Olympus. They are to be used for hiking/backpacking. I need a wider shoe hence why I picked Altra. Can you suggest if my selections are ok widthwise and what would be the preference for hiking/backpacking please? Thanks.
Trish hi, not sure if these guys ship to SA but try northerrunner.co.uk , or another good place is eBay - bet there’s some new ones on sale there that would ship to you … good luck
I am a complete newbie on Altra shoes. Which one is the widest for the toe box? I have a very wide toe foot. Looking for the one that has widest toe box. My toes always hits the sides of every shoe.
thank you for the reply, i use the shoe mostly for work where i stand all day. I look for a shoe that has wide toe and good foam or cushion underneath. I already have minimal. Not comfortable for all day use in work. Does the olympus have good support underneath your feet? Do you have better recommend for my type of use? wide toe and comfortable to walk and stand all day? Cost is not important.
Hi James such an extensive review. I wonder if you are able to help. I have the Lone Peak 6 and ordered a half size extra and they seem to flop around a bit too much. If i wear thicker socks they are better. What I would like is an Altra that is a bit more stable but with the same wide toe box as the Lone Peak 6 that can handle trails. Can you recommend please. I did like the look of your Mont Blanc in your video. Great work you are doing
Hi James Mont Blanc arrived today and unfortunately like lots of people have said the heel is slipping also on the right foot.I will have to send them back my lone peaks are great if I wear thick socks but can you please recommend another shoe similar for the trails kind regards Ann I loved the mont blancs
Will there be any difference if I buy the women's model according to the actual size of the men's model? For example, the men's US10.5 corresponds to the women's US12. I see that the inner length is the same. Can I choose this way?
@@movemorenowjames My shoes arrived, just as I judged, the women's US12 corresponds to the men's US10.5 and their widths are also the same, the women's B model corresponds to the men's D. And there is no narrow problem. I’m really lucky.
Many thanks for the detailed reviews. As a wider foot runner I am very drawn to the Altra range, although have had a very poor experience with Lone Peaks, where I just could not get a decent lock down, and frankly found them dangerous on my local coast paths. I have a couple of pairs of Topos, which I find fit me much better; very secure mid-foot, and great for toe splay. Curious to know if you have any experience with Topo, and how you find they compare with Altra? Keep up the good work! :)
Thanks David. Yes i did try topo but a few years ago, liked them but I think I found the midsoles a little too firm. Which ones would rate the highest ?
Please, help me to understand the sizing better. I am happy with Lone Peak 5 size 43. Do you say that on case of buying LP 6 I should choose 42,5 or I should stay on 43 size? Thank you in advance.
Thanks for the great review. I tried LP5 and LP6 and found them narrow in the forefoot. Comparing to older LP4.5 and other altras (Olympus4, Soperior4.5, MB) found that outsole and insoles about 5mm narrower in the forefoot (this for size us11.5). So my foot is just overhanging from the sole in forefoot. Do not have the same problem with the other altras. Did you observe similar issues with LP. Do wide LP has wider outsole in the forefoot?
Hi, yes I did find a little narrow but for me it was ok, and stretched out and opened up over the miles. The most important thing I found is that my big toe needs to be straight not pushed in, and these were ok with that… That’s for the feedback
I‘m running with Altra Rivera since a few month now and very happy with the Toe Box. My problem is I have a small foot but wide toes. Do you think the Mont Blanc isn’t good with small foot (because of the bad heels)?
For the lone peak 6, I know you mentioned you sized down to a 10 from a 10.5, is 10.5 your natural foot size, or did you size down to what felt best for you?
Had lonepeaks for ages. Wish they would get a longer lasting sole with a mm or two deeper grips. Wears out too quickly compared to competition. Like wearing a slipper.
Thanks for a comprehensive review James! Been using my LP5 for all sorts of thing here on the west coast of Sweden. Hiked, trained and ran multiple races (20-80 km) in various weather conditions, including snow. Many complain about durabilty, but I personally haven't had issues. Ok, now close to 1000miles I have some insignificant tear and wear and cushioning is about to retire. I noticed that after 50+ km my feet starting to get a bit 'tired' of the ground feeling, so I am thinking of trying Timp 4 or Olympus 4 as my next shoe. Which of those are closer to the minimalistic feeling of LP and would work better as a daily trainer?
Well done with getting some good use out the lone peaks! For ground feel I weirdly might have to say the Olympus 4, although a higher stack the midsole is a little firmer / bouncier IMO than the Timp.. the Timp 4 is soft , comfortable but could be a little mushy ! Thanks Alex
Awesome channel 💪! Which Altra model would you say has the best stability? (From a rolling of ankles point of view) Looking for something for both hiking and trail running.
@@movemorenowjames thanks James for your prompt reply. I live in South Africa and it seems the Olympus is impossible to get, huge demand for them. They seem to sell out in sizes super fast. If you had to choose between the Lone Peak 6 or the Timp 4 from a stability point of view? Appreciate your time replying to these messages my man.
Just a curious question, how does the Nike Wildhorse 7 stack up against your favourite Altra. I love the lone peak 6 but that wildhorse is so comfortable depending on the terrain. Super channel sir. 🥇
I loved the wildhorse, the only issues was the 8mm drop - think it aggravated my foot but apart from that , it’s great (actually, not great in the wet!) thanks Sebastian for the great feedback
Great shoes but can fall apart been using since lone peak 3 fav provision 5 but had to shoe goo after few months I’m not runner any more too old but altra save my weird old man feet just ordered lone peak city hi top .I live in Devon these are hiking fav
@MOVE MORE NOW. no problem! Have you ever owned the Olympus? I have lone peaks and timps that i cycle through but thought the Olympus would be good for ultras or recovery days because they are supportive. Give the ol tendons a break
After wearing Timp 4s for 6 weeks and about 200 miles, my feet blew straight through the upper of both shoes in the same place: on the outsides of both shoes below the logo and above the overlay. I didn't. catch my feet on anything or scrape anything, the upper is just weak. Also, the lug depth on these is only 4mm and they wear down quickly. The durability of these is terrible especially for a $160 shoe. On my Lone Peak 5s, the stitching started to come undone near the pinky toe after about the same mileage. I will no-longer be buying Altra trail shoes, the durability is just weak, especially for the price of the shoes. The durability of my Altra Escalante road shoes seem fine after about 150 mi.
Hey Brendan, thanks for the feedback … My timps 2/3 fell apart v quickly - haven’t done enough if the 4 yet. That said, just passed 400 miles in my Mont blancs and still going strong (as are the lone peaks …) Thanks
Superior has the potential to take over the lone peak as the best technical hiking shoe. I think they can take things from the king MT to make that happen like the heel lock down fabric and a more durable (vibram) outsole but more of a flexible patter seen in the new Montblanc and olympus and use the same extensive drainage system. Would also like to see a more stylish design change that is more understated (something theyve make a huge leap with in their '22 releases). With my experience with the 4.5 lug durability was the biggest issue. Half of the lug material was worn away after a 60mi hiking trip, almost completely worn in high usage areas. All Altra needs to do is put some of these things together to make the perfect nimble but rugged ground-feel shoe that's suits technical technical hiking. If they are capable of going even lower to the ground with maintaining what is great, even better!
I hear what you are saying. Between all the shoes there is a good recipe for a fantastic one. The King mt2 had a great lock down, awesome grip and great ground feel… pretty minimal for me over the long run but loved it.

Thanks … I keep forgetting to mention I am not sponsored or have been sent them for free… all my hard earned bucks!
Great video mate. What are the sunglasses you are wearing at the start, they look great
Thanks… rayban wayfarers 👍
Hi James, enjoyed the video, thanks. I am looking at the LP5/6 and the Olympus. They are to be used for hiking/backpacking. I need a wider shoe hence why I picked Altra. Can you suggest if my selections are ok widthwise and what would be the preference for hiking/backpacking please? Thanks.
Hi Gerhard, yes … both of those would be ideal for hiking … both have plenty of width. For max width go for the Olympus !
I live in Cape Town - South Africa and- trying to find a pair of superior 4.5s - do you know where I can find a pair in UK size 5
The Olympus would be the widest, beefiest shoe for sure. It’s a good one but for more minimal feel, love the lone peak ..
thank you for the reply, i use the shoe mostly for work where i stand all day.
Thanks Ann, go for the Mont Blanc - love the shoe or go down 1/2 a size in the Lp.
Hope that helps
Hi James Mont Blanc arrived today and unfortunately like lots of people have said the heel is slipping also on the right foot.I will have to send them back my lone peaks are great if I wear thick socks but can you please recommend another shoe similar for the trails kind regards Ann I loved the mont blancs
Hi James, no need to reply I have just ordered the Olympus 5.
Will there be any difference if I buy the women's model according to the actual size of the men's model? For example, the men's US10.5 corresponds to the women's US12. I see that the inner length is the same. Can I choose this way?
Hi, I don’t think so but can’t be sure 1 sorry… not much help
@@movemorenowjames My shoes arrived, just as I judged, the women's US12 corresponds to the men's US10.5 and their widths are also the same, the women's B model corresponds to the men's D. And there is no narrow problem. I’m really lucky.
@@卢六六-k8n great
What shoes do you recommend for spartan or obstacle course? Can’t decide from this video. 😅 but i love altra!
If you could still find the King MT 2 then I would go for that … if not, either the Lone Peak or superior (tied up tight)
Did you have some good room upfront @ 43 for the LP5? If so, yes… go down 1/2 size ..:
The most important thing I found is that my big toe needs to be straight not pushed in, and these were ok with that…
That’s for the feedback
* TIMP 4 has 29mm of stack, not 25mm.
No KingMT 2?
I‘m running with Altra Rivera since a few month now and very happy with the Toe Box.
My problem is I have a small foot but wide toes.
Do you think the Mont Blanc isn’t good with small foot (because of the bad heels)?
Tricky to say but maybe best avoid the MB if your feet are on the smaller / narrower side …
Sorry, doesn’t really help much!
@@movemorenowjames thanks for your response and content 👍🏽
Pleasure
For the lone peak 6, I know you mentioned you sized down to a 10 from a 10.5, is 10.5 your natural foot size, or did you size down to what felt best for you?
Hi, just got the LP7 and yes, went down 1/2 size for my foot size (still some space) …
Had lonepeaks for ages. Wish they would get a longer lasting sole with a mm or two deeper grips. Wears out too quickly compared to competition. Like wearing a slipper.
I know what you mean , the grip isn’t the best especially on wet trails ! Have you tried the Mont Blanc, the lite base vibram grip is pretty good!
Thanks… go for the Olympus, it’s the one with the best support. Still neutral but good control in the heel ..👍
Which one is fastest?
The Mont Blanc is the fastest !
Why not tell your sizing for the Timp 4? I think you run a half size smaller than me. That info would be very helpful
So the T4 was a uk 10.5, length is spot on. LP 6 and MB is 10 - better length …
Thanks Andy, sorry for the late reply. They are good but yes, unfortunately the quality isn’t always on point
4:54 its 29 mm, sorry
Yup, absolutely right - thanks.. I did put a comment up correcting my mistake . Thanks 🙏 for the feedback
The timp has 29mm
Thanks - I did drop a message on the board but appreciate the help!
@MOVE MORE NOW. no problem! Have you ever owned the Olympus? I have lone peaks and timps that i cycle through but thought the Olympus would be good for ultras or recovery days because they are supportive. Give the ol tendons a break
@@mathews0618 yes, had a few pairs , I like them, then only issues for me is they collect loads of mud in their tread!
Wow those Timps look narrow!
Might just the angle , they feel much wider and more accommodating than the Timp 3/2 .. it feels great
After wearing Timp 4s for 6 weeks and about 200 miles, my feet blew straight through the upper of both shoes in the same place: on the outsides of both shoes below the logo and above the overlay. I didn't. catch my feet on anything or scrape anything, the upper is just weak.
That said, just passed 400 miles in my Mont blancs and still going strong (as are the lone peaks …)
Thanks
