what a nicely maintained engine. I had to go at it with a sledgehammer to crack open the filler plug. Curse the previous owners for neglecting simple maintenance
For the cost of a couple quarts of delicious gear oil, it's worth changing it regularly. I haven't changed it in 6 years, so, even if it looked clean before, I now know it's clean and lubing things up.
Dang, that's in nice shape. The salt really is hard on mine. I've been confused about the lack of instruction or even suggestion of changing the fluid this. At 415,000 km it's getting up there.
At the bottom of your gearbox is those small black cover/pins plastic. Mine is leaking oil. Can i remove them with my next oil change replace the seals, scared its holding something in place inside the gearbox
I haven't had experience with replacing those, or leaks. I can say that if there is a leak, and if it's easy enough to get to, I'd replace anything that's leaking if you plan on holding onto your golf for any period of time. Let us know what you find on those please.
@wellingtonviking will do. Im doing them end of this month. 02 jetta and this will also be its 375000 km service, leak not severe but its messy, my daily driver. Bought it in 2010 with 159k on the clock. Cheap to run to work and back everyday. Ill update on my findings.
I have just drained mine, 1.9 Tdi but only got 1 Ltr out?? Filling back up and only got 1/2 ltr in and it’s overflowing, on axle stands and have spun the wheels in different gears, what could I be doing wrong???
So I can do this whenever I please ? I have a 2000 tdi 5 speed manual. Idk if it's ever been done but i have also heard that changing trans fluid can be bad for the transmission, If it's not being done regularly. Or does this only apply to automatic transmissions?
i've never had an issue with the manual transmission. i've heard the same as what shyvana top said below: that concern you have really is related to automatic transmissions. the fluid that comes out of your manual transmission will likely still look clean, but, as with all lubricants, there is going to be a lifespan. for a few bucks, it's worth keeping things lubricated well.
Is it okay to do it with the car over de ramps? I'd imagine that the fill hole is designed for a leveled surface? Or you're just using volume to check the quantity to put in? Thanks!
worked fine for me. if you know the correct amount that comes out and that goes in, shouldn't be an issue. you're pumping it into the fill hole that will run out when it's overfilled.
Overfilling isn't an issue, as the OP said anything extra will fall out the fill hole, I'm fact some people will add a little extra via the shift tower on top. (maybe 4 or so more oz) under filling is bad because 5th gear will be starved for oil first, so if one drives on the freeway a lot, it's good to make sure things are topped off.
Is it safe if the car I bought has 130000 miles and I don’t know if it’s been changed before to change it? Or is it like the automatic Transmissions where once it’s too many miles it’s better to leave it until it goes out?
Diy hack.... A vw lug bolt is the same size as the drain plug. Take out one lug bolt, go to a hardware store and purchase 2-3 nuts the proper size to go on lug bolt. Tighten them against each other, and use the lug bolt + nut contraption to take the drain / fill plugs out. I bought am extra lug bolt for this sole purpose.
You probably know more about mechanics than me, but let me give you a tip: that's not how a torque wrench works. Torque wrenches are designed to be held by the handle, especifically in the middle part of it, not any other point of the wrench. The torque number you set is only provided for that point in the handle, otherwise the measure is off.
I can see your thought process for that. But surely the torque wrench click is based on the force needed to overcome the strength of the spring in the handle no ?
@@57MJMJ That's what I thought, but it turns out it's more complicated than that. Since my English is pretty crappy, I'll let this guy do the talking :): th-cam.com/video/2XCygLNpfKE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hr3LFD6bjFottM47
That's not right. My first guess would be that someone messed with it before and didn't do a good job. Guess number 2 would be a leak somewhere. Alternatively, it could be off if you were on a significant incline or decline while checking. Hopefully there isn't a foreign particle in there blocking the rest from draining.

I've run into that on previous cars. Nice when folks care after their vehicles. A good vehicle will repay the favor by acting accordingly!
After crawling out from under my 2003 alh and the oil mess that I call my own, yours looks brand new. 😂👌💪🏼
Clean California unsalted roads and a skid plate keep things pretty tidy in this area. Spoiled I know.
Small straight extension worked better than knuckle extension for getting to fill plug.
that oil coming out the transmission was so clean no need for a change

He is new to this. I can tell because of the drain pad he used.
Just because it looks clean does not mean that it isn't broken down and not lubricating as well as it should be.

These things go forever even when used and abused.
Best car ever i love her more than a maserati or a lamborgini a legendary engine solid
Great video!
Thank you for the kind words.
i know this is old but VW changed it recommendation from GL4 to a lighter fluid now like Synchromesh. From a 15ish voc to 6.4 voc oddly enough.
18 ft pounds for drain plug and fill plug torque
I appreciate you!

@@dominiqueeybers9186 That's a thing of beauty. Love the manual transmissions with the 1.8 tdi engine.
Appreciate the follow up.

hopefully you don't have a leak or someone who didn't fill it up properly last time.

Only automatics, if you see problems on a manual when you change it those problems already existed b4 changing jt

Anyone know what the thing is on the transmission that has the vw logo. Mine is leaking and I’m trying to figure out which seal it is.
Any luck finding this? I haven't had the issue.

Isn't there oil still trapped in the 5th gear box, so you're not able to put in the 2.1 liter spec.

I'm guessing you're satisfied with this product? I'm looking to get the same gear oil for my mk4 2.0 golf.
Yes, I have Redline in both of my manual transmission cars. Working well.
Is it safe if the car I bought has 130000 miles and I don’t know if it’s been changed before to change it? Or is it like the automatic Transmissions where once it’s too many miles it’s better to leave it until it goes out?
change it 👍
I'd still change it.

Changed my oil today, shifts nicer🙂

Weird .. I drained mine. Some came out and when I filled it, it only took 3/4 of a quart before overflowing.

hii 2 liter oil?
Technically 2.1 quarts
why dont you just remove a small clamp scew on that line that is in the way. that way you can move line and it is easier
thanks for the tip
Aren’t you supposed to have the car level when filling up with oil?….I know, you put it only 2.1qts but still…..
level is best
How much fluid does it take ?
Technically 2.1 quarts - fill it until is starts coming out of the fill plug hole
Can you just open the full plug to refill or wil it spill out?
the fill plug is the one up higher. the drain plug is the one on the bottom.
Much make oil ?
sorry, will you clarify your question?
Wat nm tork plis
don't know what that is. 18 ft pounds for drain plug and fill plug torque
Its about 24 or 25 in newton meters
