I bought a bottle of Balvenie Caribbean cask during lockdown, partially out of binge watching Westworld (it's the choice drink of one of the characters). It set me on a course of buying more whiskies and I've now gotten through Glenmorangie, Macallan, Dalwhinnie, Bowmore and Talikser. I guess lockdown was good for something.
Bought a Lagavulin Distiller Edition, searched for a review. 4 hours later and still watching these guys through a traditional TH-cam rabbit hole. To be honest, don’t regret it one bit hahaha
I been going on that arc since I found you Guys after the rogue episode I really am happy about there being two dudes that are pretty much the same kind of whiskey sipping shenanigan slinging heathens that’d I be hanging out with had I stumbled upon you in a bar or at work or wherever. Thanks for having me and cheers!
Finally got a pour of Oban 14 and man, y'all weren't kidding. That is an amazing dram. Headed to the U.K. this weekend and hoping to snag some goodies to bring back home. Cheers y'all!
Just started my whiskey journey and am drinking this as I watch this video. It is one of my first 3 purchases. The other two are Monkey shoulder and MCCLELLAND'S ISLAY. So far I actually like all 3.
Great ep guys! I'm definitely going to try and work on a spreadsheet of all the episodes so that I can get a list of all these whiskeys and differences between them. If someone else has done something similar or is doing so then i'll stop, otherwise i'll happily re-watch all the eps and start taking notes. (I'll probably do it anyway)
Please publish it somewhere when you are done, would love to have that infographic! It's impossible to keep all the input from the over 100 videos in head :D
I got a miniature of this for Christmas this last year. But I have a full bottle waiting for me in storage. But from what I've heard the one I have is like a $250 bottle. Idk but I definitely like it from what I've had so far.
I do think you have mailed it. But I do personally find that their whisky while friendly and approachable has enough drama to keep people coming as well. Only so much new people will do have to have people coming back
Instead of quintessential whiskeys for each region, you could go through the basic flavor profiles each one is known for. Then give some examples of a gateway whiskey to start exploring each region. I'm currently taking a good friend on a whiskey "journey" and could use some ideas on good ones to start him with.
Yes! As you've prob guessed, I enjoy the informative stuff. I feel it allows you to enjoy whiskey more and to help others enjoy it more as well. Rex may act bored with it, but he can't deny that he wouldn't appreciate all that whiskey nearly as much if you weren't there to tell him about it.
Haha. You're moochitude never ceases to amaze me! You will miss him, however. A few bottles in, I guarantee you'll be asking an imaginary Daniel what flavors he's getting.
As a newly anointed MB, I've been watching random Vault videos I've missed out on. TH-cam recommended this one, and it happened to be for a scotch I've had! I didn't like the double cask on the first go compared to the regular Macallan 12, but once I added just a touch of water, the flavor profile completed shifted and was far more appealing. Still working on my tasting vocabulary.
Wow! I feel so much better after watching this video. I thought I was the only one to feel that this scotch was over rated. It also made me feel better knowing that I haven't been the only one, over the last six years to have lost so much of my looks and look so much more bloated and pathetic in that short of a window. Thanks guys!
I need advice. Years ago in college we chug beer and take shots of liquor. As my pallet changes, it's been makers mark, black label.amd now Macallan. But I consider Macallan to be one of my tops. It's easily accessible in many bars and is affordable. But what is the next step? Keep in mind I am an amateur forsure, I'm just enjoying. Let me know what to taste for. I'm excited for your suggestions
Corey Martin - Big Poppa Macallan 12 is actually cheaper than GlenDronach 12 where I live. I like it more as well. GD 18 isn’t available for purchase, but I’ve tried it. I’d take Mac 18 over it if they cost the same, but GD 18 is significantly cheaper in states where they do actually sell it, so it’s probably the better buy. Of course, I’ve never had a full bottle of the Allardice, so I’m not sure if it stands up as well as Mac 18.
This stuff was easily worth $70 even back then. Super refined and rounded whisky isn't for everyone, but it's valuable because you won't find those qualities in a whisky for any less money.
I bought a bottle of Macallan 12 Double Cask and Redbreast 12 today, and cued up this video looking for a Macallan 12 Double Cask review. Little did I know I'd get both.
Awesome videos, lot to learn, and very knowledgeable. Surprised you didn’t mention a couple BiB bourbons when McKenna came up. It’s a very consistent process, and with the last minute mention of Evan Williams, I have to say Evan Williams white label is some of the most affordable on point bourbon I have ever tried. Cheers.
I have mentioned on a couple other videos of the whiskey vault (not that I expect you to remember) how the first Scotch I ever bought and tried was the MaCallan 12 Double Cask back when I knew absolute zero about whiskey and figured they were all the same. and how the macallan was so bad I almost died. but since i started watching this series i have tried it a couple more times and the only flavor I ever got was dirt. i am not even being a smart hiney that's exactly what I taste. so the question is: how long does one need to drink whiskey before they can make flavor distinctions? or could it be my brain has no reference points for what it is tasting and cant get past the harsh peaty flavors of scotch?
It will take awhile, and it's totally different for everyone. It really is like a "wall" as Lew Bryson refers to it, where on one side all you get is the more dominant alcohol and burnt notes, and after a whole world opens up to you.
Picked up a taster on this one. Having it as I watch this. Getting a lot as described. Also it's about a $70 retail now. I think $50ish mentioned earlier. Not my favorite so far tho. But still decent. Just not for the money.
New to the channel and loving it. Great video. It's become apparent to me that Rex can't help himself and Daniel has become aware. At 11:06 Daniel goes to grab a bottle that says "pot still", stops, grabs his whisky then continues to find the pot still bottle as to prevent the "mooch grab". Too funny. Keep up whit the shnanagins.
Just watching this for the first time. I’m a newbie and Talisker is becoming my favorite after saying, “Oh this MaCallan 12 is so good!” at the start of this enjoyable journey.
You have done the famous grouse but it like to see a review of the black grouse I haven't had a bad scotch blended or single malt I'm enjoying glenfiddich 12 at the moment... but I love black grouse and would love to try anything similar and what is the Pete level in that whiskey
Mac 12 is expensive in Canada at $100. And this new double cask is not as good as the old sherry 12. But at least it has an age statement. Pretty sure they had to do that because of the terrible sales from the non age statement swig that they were trying to dump on us. For the price Benriach 12 is simply amazing. A real complex delicious sherry monster.
I have to comment (preface: I am very new to whiskey in general, and normally enjoy Rye): A good friend of mine turned me onto Macallan 12 and frankly of the small selection of Scotch I have tried this is easily the best yet. I wish to grow with these flavours and see where it takes me, if this is middle of the road where do I go from here? I honestly have enjoyed the bottle and plan to pick up another, but am more then willing to try something else if not for the adventure alone.
I actually just went and did a Macallan tasting at the Austin Celtic Festival (A little disappointed I didn't see you there Daniel). And the tasting was FANTASTIC! It was with Kieron Elliot. He was hilarious and very informative. I did a Glenlivet tasting where they just gave you the tasting and that was basically it. So good on Macallan!
More story time. I learn it, and then the family and friends I drink with think I’m a genius. My dad is already calling me a genius after 2 weeks of watching the show, also I’ve sunk quite a bit of money into whisky since I started watching.
So moral of the story? The 15 isn't worth more than double the price of the 12 right? The 15 is one of my favorites... Love my 15 but for $110 I am searching for a more economic alternative since it lasted me just over a month (LOL)... what does everyone suggest? I'm a big Islay fan but enjoy these sherry casks too... thinking Glenlivet 12 right?
If someone likes MaCallan 12 (regular not double cask) what would you recommend that they try. I am still fairly new to Scotch. I have Monkey Shoulder and Dalmore 12YR and I like them both.
I’m attending a macallan tasting night in Townsville North Queensland Australia in two weeks time, and using your posts as my go too research.... =) love your posts n keep it up!
Dear Daniel and Rex.. I love your channel. I found single malt through you guys. I used to think that Black Label and Chivas were the ultimate until i discovered Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. As a special request can you do a side by side tasting of 4 whiskies. Glenlivet 12 & 18. Glenfiddich 12 & 18.
You guys mentioned you are not crazy about sherry influenced scotch. What about Glendronach? Would love to see a video with the Glendronach 12, 15 and 18. Cheers!
I'm still hoping for a sherry influenced scotch that is new / interesting / special enough for me to really like. There's still a lot of whiskies I haven't tried yet. Most of my first time whiskey experiences are on camera, doing these videos for you guys.
Aww shucks, I just tried this whisky and its the first whisky ever that gave me forward notes of chocolate! I came here to confirm and was very let down =/ I guess ill keep at it... thanks for the laughs
I could see chocolate notes, I've got macallan gold double cask, I could see like a milk chocolate thing in the beginning and finish, or like maybe even a malt ball like whopper candy sort of thing from it.
Thanks so much for answering my questions both in the comments and on camera! Like i said, you can find Bulleit pretty cheap, it's 20€ in most places. So I guess I will go with bulleit. By now I found one single shop selling Henry McKenna for 45, still more then double the price you pay (€ and $ are nearly equal at this point in time) so I guess that one's off the table. And yes, the laphroaig wasn't budget (45€), that's why I have to stick to the cheaper ones even more. Thanks again and have a nice day.
Macallan 12, friendly, buttery, COMPLEX it is my new Favorite. Butter blast then erased to smooth leather to black licorice at the end. It fucking great. IMHO. Try it again.73.00 in MN. 😳
This is like the standard Highland malt...it's good...can't say anything bad about it.I'm now at the point in my journey that I look for something to smack me around just a little. This is good when trying to expose some of my Jack Daniels drinking rookie friends to some good scotch. Slainte
Hi guys ive been watching you guys for a while now. Slowly going thru all your videos. Want to say thank you for sharing your professional opinion which help me (newbie) to decide which next whiskey I should buy. Now my question is whats the biggest diff between those two? The 12 year and 15 year triple cask? The 15 year is $100 more than the 12 year here in canada (sorry) 12 year is $89 15 year is $189 before taxes. Whats the best for my money? Thanks again and sorry for long message.
I'm just getting into scotches and whisk(e)ys this is the first one that I've ever tried and really truly enjoyed upon first tasting it. I noticed some oakiness and almost honey type sweetness. I'm still new and developing my pallete, what other similar scotches might you recommend similar to this? possibly a touch more smokiness? Also what are your thoughts on the 12 compared to the 15 or 18? Thanks and great video!
Hey guys, quick question, have you ever had the Glenlivet Cipher? I can get a bottle for half price from a friend who doesn't drink but I'm not sure if it's worth getting.
Damn Whisky prices seem to be really bad in Germany :( Macallans are at least 70 bucks when I quickly looked it up. Definitely better options for that price.
I enjoyed the beginning and middle taste of MaCallan 12, but the finish tasted like tequila to me which I am not a fan of. Is that from the sherry finish or is it smoke or something else? It was my first dip into scotch and trying to get a handle on where that flavor came from to see if I want to pursue experiencing more.
Rex, what would you say is the percentage of Dan's rantings that actually make it to your ears? From what I've seen, you're paying attention to about 10% of what comes out of Daniel's mouth, amiright???
I hate being such a lover of macallen since it’s so mainstream but macallen 12 is just so fucking good. Shits about a 100$ a bottle where I am and I find myself buying one every 3 weeks or so.
Great video but at the end you didn't mention Lowlands. Any thoughts on Auchentoshan or Glenkinchie? I'm more of an Islay drinker who also likes Dalmore and Oban 14 but wanted to try something from the Lowlands.
I've been on the fence on the Double Cask, a lot of lackluster reviews, might pick one up if they run a sale to compare to the Sherry 12. I'll second the Glendronach range for Sherried Malts, the 12yo is ok but the 15yo and up are amazing! They beat Dalmore, Aberlour, Macallan.
That's not how this works. First he says something I don't agree with. Then, I act skeptical - but give him the opportunity to convince me. Next, he pulls out his favorite whiskies, along with some blah blah blah - and Finally, I end up getting free whiskey. I just gotta smile, nod, and sip-sip-sip.
You've earned your nickname for sure, Mooch. The Laphroaig 30yo is long gone and my last Highland Park 25yo is earmarked for Christmas opening, the $1,000 will have to be in 100,000 installments and the hug virtual {{{^-^}}}.
Since y’all are in Texas I need your expert tasting of Henderson whiskey of Southwest Spirits & Wine Dallas, TX. we have it South Carolina and for a budget whiskey it’s good
$72 in Indiana. I agree it's not worth the price, but that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable. I won't buy it again, but for about $20 or so less, I'd probably stock it.
Hey guys, thanks for discussing my comment! It's amazing how inarticulate you can feel if Rex reads your marginally English post out loud. I agree, by the way, with the comments below. You guys are doing the best reviews now, and more people should pay attention.
No promotion for this channel yet. Not even good titles / thumbnails / tagging, which would make a huge difference. I don't think it's a priority for the school (wizard academy) yet. BUT, with the engagement we're seeing from you guys - I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to give the channel some more love. On the flip side, the new distillery channel Daniel and I and launching will get lots of TLC from the get-go. In the meantime, share this channel with fellow whiskey nerds!
So, leave it to me to try to throw weird shit in on a video about all the"typical" whiskeys. You've mentioned whiskeys that have smoked barley, but use mesquite or "the local fuel" do you have any examples in the vault?
So I drank a half bottle of Macallan 12 year sherry oak a couple days ago all to my self & wasn’t even drunk. It tasted great & I enjoyed it but didn’t even get drunk. That being said I don’t really have to much of a alcohol tolerance, I drink about once or twice a week. I just kept drinking more hoping to get effects & finally gave up after I drank half of it. Is this shit watered down? Any other bottle half the price tag would have me drunk off my ass if I came close to drinking half the damn bottle
hey guys loving your content, would like to see you guys review something from "the english whisky company", Jura and Ardmore Legacy. i know right i ask alot :)
Very middle of the road on this one. At the same 57$ price point as 12yr sherry I would never pick this over the the standard bottling. It would have been better at 46%
Another great episode and thanks for responding to my last comment! I'm definitely going to check out the Master of Malt Advent Calendar. Now I've never had a single malt scotch (newbie), and based on name recognition alone I told my wife to pick me up a bottle for my birthday this weekend. Based on your reactions in this video, should I change my request? Is there another single malt that would be a better entry into that world? Thanks again!
Who else is suffering from quarantined boredom and watching random whiskey videos 👍👎
LOL preach!
To be honest, don’t regret it one bit hahaha
still in quarantine a year later still watching random videos
Thanks to you guys I tasted Talisker and Highland Park. Never going back. Im a happy person now.
Talisker 10 is amazing.
I been going on that arc since I found you
Guys after the rogue episode I really am happy about there being two dudes that are pretty much the same kind of whiskey sipping shenanigan slinging heathens that’d I be hanging out with had I stumbled upon you in a bar or at work or wherever. Thanks for having me and cheers!
Finally got a pour of Oban 14 and man, y'all weren't kidding. That is an amazing dram. Headed to the U.K. this weekend and hoping to snag some goodies to bring back home. Cheers y'all!
Also...give it time. The a-h%les with come haha
Bought a mini bottle of this, and came straight here to drink it with you two!
Literally same thing for me
Ah, glass cow, my favourite Scottish city
Just started my whiskey journey and am drinking this as I watch this video. It is one of my first 3 purchases. The other two are Monkey shoulder and MCCLELLAND'S ISLAY. So far I actually like all 3.
Great ep guys! I'm definitely going to try and work on a spreadsheet of all the episodes so that I can get a list of all these whiskeys and differences between them.
If someone else has done something similar or is doing so then i'll stop, otherwise i'll happily re-watch all the eps and start taking notes. (I'll probably do it anyway)
A nerd after my own heart. It's like you're speaking my love language.
Please publish it somewhere when you are done, would love to have that infographic! It's impossible to keep all the input from the over 100 videos in head :D
Why not do a comparison between the big 3? Glenfiddich 12, Glenlivet 12, and this one? Maybe throw in Delmore 12 for the fun of it.
Dalmore 12 and Dalmore 12 are both cheaper.... Glenfiddich 12 costs half as much.
I meant balvenie 12 sry
Bought my first bottle this week. Blown away, beautiful drink. Toffee fudge beautiful on the nose
I got a miniature of this for Christmas this last year. But I have a full bottle waiting for me in storage. But from what I've heard the one I have is like a $250 bottle. Idk but I definitely like it from what I've had so far.

Haha. You're moochitude never ceases to amaze me! You will miss him, however. A few bottles in, I guarantee you'll be asking an imaginary Daniel what flavors he's getting.
Butterscotch all the way indeed, pretty accurate review. Good work lads

What are your thoughts on the Macallan 18yr? It was the first scotch I ever tried and I really like it and have stayed with it.
It's pretty damn smooth

Older Macallan great....
New Glendronach fantastic!!!!
Would much rather have a Glendronach 18 for the price.
Love your reviews guys.

flash forward three years and theres now a wall dedicated to the "Quintessentials" hahah
Also Rex had one hell of a character arc.
Ironically, the first Islay that came to Daniel’s mind as a quintessential example was Laphroaig 🤔 I heartily agree! (As does Emma 😉)
@@hido5342 morning guy y
MaCallan popped my Scotch "sherry" (get it? in stead of "cherry"!) and I fell in love. MaCallan is a cruel, cruel mistress.

thank u for doing a macallan video, what good alternatives to macallan? Great video like always!!!
Wonderful video - what’s the most crazy priced whisky and why? Ben form Singapore

Was gifted the Macallan 15 fine oak as a wedding present, and dug it, but I hear the 12 is preferred by most. What do you think?
It's good, but not the best Sherry finish Speyside. Try Glendronach 12
More story time. I learn it, and then the family and friends I drink with think I’m a genius. My dad is already calling me a genius after 2 weeks of watching the show, also I’ve sunk quite a bit of money into whisky since I started watching.

Daniel says, "we". I'm undecided. Still holding out hope for something special.

ghostreverie thank you! I actually found that one fairly cheap. Somewhere in the mid-twenties I think. Not as cheap as bulleit but still.
Macallan 12, friendly, buttery, COMPLEX it is my new Favorite. Butter blast then erased to smooth leather to black licorice at the end. It fucking great. IMHO. Try it again.73.00 in MN. 😳
Four Roses Single Barrel or Buffalo Trace - easily the best bourbons to jump in with
Man you guys need to do a review on redbreast 12 year
This is like the standard Highland malt...it's good...can't say anything bad about it.I'm now at the point in my journey that I look for something to smack me around just a little. This is good when trying to expose some of my Jack Daniels drinking rookie friends to some good scotch. Slainte
What do you look for in your scotch? Personally I don't line overally smokey flavors but I am a amateur so I don't know what makes a good scotch
You guys make whisk(e)y fun. Thank you. Can you a review a Tomatin?
I'll add it!
I am a fan of Tomatin. Looking forward to it!
dude on the left is the real life Lorax
So I just got a bottle of Macallan 17 as a gift, I noticed the bottle in your collection. How do you like it and how is it different from the 12?
Haven't tried it yet! I'll do it soon.
Whiskey Vault stoked
Emma fighting with you guys in the quintesential now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love you guys !
and we love you!
Dirty quick way =East of Inverness, north of Perth & West of Aberdeen = Speyside malt.
i love macallan :)
How does the macallan 12 double cask compare to the 12 sherry cask?
I know 6 years passing hasn't been kind to prices, but this bottle is $85 in Ohio now
Can you guys do a review on the Macallan 12 triple cask ??
Of the MaCallan which would you say are actually worth the cost and not just being a $30 whisky with a $40 dollar tag
The 12yr is a great one just to get a classic example of a quality and subtle Speyside.
Well that works out great as I have a miniature I won at Easter still.
MaCallan is beyond over priced in Va, it's 70 dollars for a 12.
I find Dalmore 12 to be far easier for the beginners I share my whisky with.
Glennfiddich's are in the same range. Also, Glenlivet. I haven't done the 12 15 and 18 comparison. I'll check it out!
Whiskey Vault thanks very much, keep up the good content!
Whiskey Vault what about the dalmore 12?
Hey guys, quick question, have you ever had the Glenlivet Cipher? I can get a bottle for half price from a friend who doesn't drink but I'm not sure if it's worth getting.
Really cool idea. Never tried it, but I love the marketing behind it. ;-)
I'm probably getting it because of that, love the mystery behind it
Damn Whisky prices seem to be really bad in Germany :(
Macallans are at least 70 bucks when I quickly looked it up. Definitely better options for that price.
Way better. But remember, Macallan will always have name brand pricing. Much better whisky is available for less.
Yeah, Rex. what percentage...
....jerk.
I hate being such a lover of macallen since it’s so mainstream but macallen 12 is just so fucking good. Shits about a 100$ a bottle where I am and I find myself buying one every 3 weeks or so.
First off, really enjoy the content you guys are awesome. What's your opinion on the flavored whiskeys? (ie fireball or Jack Daniels Honey)
Not a fan. Personally ;-)
Harvey Specter drinks it 🤷🏾♂️
Great video but at the end you didn't mention Lowlands. Any thoughts on Auchentoshan or Glenkinchie? I'm more of an Islay drinker who also likes Dalmore and Oban 14 but wanted to try something from the Lowlands.
By the way congrats on breaking 1k subscribers.
Thanks!
Amazing...1k 5 months ago from my writing, now 44k! Way to go guys, very entertaining channel.
Funny to read this while they're steadily closing in on 100k :p
Now 135k, time flies
And 165k by now.
HOLY SHIT, REX DID YOU READ THIS? Jimidrammer thinks there's something that beats Dalmore.... I sense a showdown.
That's not how this works.
First he says something I don't agree with.
Then, I act skeptical - but give him the opportunity to convince me.
Next, he pulls out his favorite whiskies, along with some blah blah blah
- and Finally, I end up getting free whiskey.
I just gotta smile, nod, and sip-sip-sip.
All will be forgiven with a gifting of your finest whiskey. And a hug. And $1,000.
You've earned your nickname for sure, Mooch. The Laphroaig 30yo is long gone and my last Highland Park 25yo is earmarked for Christmas opening, the $1,000 will have to be in 100,000 installments and the hug virtual {{{^-^}}}.
Done. 99,999 to go.
Please try Arran on all the finishings!!! jaja I would like to see that.
Cheers from chile
Yes! Isle of Arran is awesome!
"Don't even watch the video. Go away." Okay Rex, I'll close the tab then.
Since y’all are in Texas I need your expert tasting of Henderson whiskey of Southwest Spirits & Wine Dallas, TX. we have it South Carolina and for a budget whiskey it’s good
You said you've had cheaper scotch than this that was just as good, can you name some?
You bouth are funny and awsome whisky Lovers.!!!
Chapou'.....
$72 in Indiana. I agree it's not worth the price, but that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable. I won't buy it again, but for about $20 or so less, I'd probably stock it.
it is a 100 dollars in canada , i bought a bottle yesterday but it not open yet , i hope it good :)
I’m a new scotch drinker. What would recommend, the Macallen 12 double cast or the Macallan Gold? Love your cannel. Thanks
In tasted both, I would select the double cask.
Hey guys, thanks for discussing my comment! It's amazing how inarticulate you can feel if Rex reads your marginally English post out loud. I agree, by the way, with the comments below. You guys are doing the best reviews now, and more people should pay attention.
Yeah. Rex is a jerk. That's the motto of today. ;-)
Just cracked a sherry cast Mac12. I like it, but after the Uigadal. it feels very tame
$50!? Where did you find it for anywhere near that?
Here in CA it runs for $70.99 at Safeway. Can get it down to $58.99 if you are a Safeway member
Juan Garcia ah!! Thanks!
I been drinking scotch for a while never tryed a macallan it be my next buy.
Iv tried alot of smokey whiskies i love dalmore
between the regular Macallan 12 and the Double Cask, I have to go with the regular 12.
Good vids!
$40? This is $120 in Canada at the government stores now damn. 5 years ago that would have been 55 USD
Do you guys promote your channel at all? why do you have so many videos (of great quality) but so little subscribers?
Yes! several actually. Balcones has one, Colkegan from New Mexico uses Mesquite. Del Bac from Arizona does as well! I think others as well.
what time do ya'll normally start drinking whiskey
You stop?
The pronunciation of Glasgow and Edinburgh 😱😱. Has definitely changed a bit in newer episodes.
Love it! I'll add these in!
Jura. Yes. All day err' day.
No, definitely start! It's smooth and friendly. Very easy entry
Awesome! Thanks for the info.
