The game was really imbalanced, though. Dante got 2 pages of nerfs and is still currently the best character in the game, and the top characters' tool kits are just so much better than the bottom to the point of invalidating them. Which is expected of a Marvel game. Game's still fun.

The more things change the more they stay the same. There's a subset of people who still think Sol is so broken he's oppressing the rest of the cast. In an interview around 2011, filipino champ was asked why he stopped playing sf4. He half-jokingly said that his character, dhalsim, got kicked out of the game because the twins were terrorizing the meta. It's interesting because a lot of people these days don't remember that he was a top dhalsim player, famous for having a very impressive win record on daigo. And I remember this quote because it really stuck to me how sf4 just was a different game at that point, cause not only was everyone playing the 2 new offensive characters, but everyone's idea on how the game was supposed to be played now changed too. In other words, people elevated characters due to a different mentality based on offensive play. I could be wrong, but it was around this time that knuckledu was becoming real famous for his offensive guile, and smug was kinda already playing sf5 with his dudley.
Once that Elena got in the game, people realized that she was a character that could really stand up to the offensive style that the game had developed. This was around the same time when infiltration had pretty much dropped Akuma, and focused more on his famous hit and run style decapre, and his chunli.
The point I'm trying to make is that Elena was an example of the (tournament) meta developing, becoming a pocket answer to the insane offense that existed. Had the game developed further, we would have seen more counters to elena.
It's ridiculous to bring her as an example of the state of sf4's last year when in reality it was more about the evolution of the entire game up until that point.

"Git gud" started as an ironic joke because the game wasn't well documented and a lot of the mechanics and interactions were cryptic especially without a wiki. Saying "git gud" didn't actually have anything to do with player skill. But eventually DS got more popular in part to rage videos and the meaning was lost as more new players gravitated towards this perception and they started using "git gud" completely unironically

The way the discourse around SFIV has been distilled down is basically how everything worth talking about in the past gets distilled down to single talking points that are almost entirely bullshit. It makes you start suspecting that the way people talk about most things that were around before you were born is also just bullshit, including actual historical events. The farther back in time it is, the more likely the most often repeated talking points are complete bullshit because it gets exponentially harder to just look up the relevant info.

Capcom Cup 2015 had 20ish characters represented with only 3 of the 32 competitors playing Elena and none of them maining her.

Pro players aside, did the average sf4 enjoyer really dislike the tournaments at the tail end of the game? I remember being constantly hyped because some sick stuff was happening every set.

i loved SFIV but didn't watch any tournaments kinda glad i didn't but with finding Core-A-Gaming to crowbcat's god like videos then many commentators i thought i missed out.
Mostly the True Life: being a pro gamer i saw in the 2000's blew my mind.

I don't remember people complaining about Ultra SFIV at all. Pretty much everybody thought it was dope (despite Elena healing bullshit).

Yep back when everyone went SFV, SFIV was better I didn't see the masses signing up for the tournaments people were still hosting years after.

A lot of the 'Ultra' bad was because the first patch was trash. C. Viper famously couldn't even combo into her specials because Elena's hurt boxes were so trash.
They released an update that fixed like Elena's hurtboxes. The main complaint in Ultra was largely just Elena invalidating so many characters near the end. Even then Yun / Seth were considered pretty good matchups vs here. Ultra probably only had 1 or 2 characters without any bad matchups.

I got into fighting games at the very end of SF4's lifecycle (SFV was already announced), and the only Elena-related thing I remember is this really boring set between an Elena player and I think Infiltration, and they'd just walk back and forth, and the set closing round was won with a timeout
This made me dislike the character a lot for some reason

Haha if you're talking about gamerbee vs infiltration from Evo that year, that might be my favorite set in any game ever. Different strokes I guess

So is this about people speaking confidently about a game they no longer play or watch tourneys for? I don't know, man. It's more like listing the reason they lost interest.

I certainly was having a lot more fun when USFIV was the game of choice as opposed to SFV. I mean, not just the game- but the community too. Tournaments seemed more fun. Maybe it was because it was more grass roots. Perhaps it was more organic.
And yes, I haven't played much recently- not going to lie. I can see that SFV has A LOT to offer in terms of content now- but I'm just not drawn to the game.

We wouldn't got were we are without change, i get it i miss SFIV the Mechanic focus that paired well with SFIV then all the changes SFV brought mostly the lack of things SFV had day 1.
So many think they know more then harada, all Tekken 7 discussions or for all fighting games spiral into the same talk of missing the old days, dislike the 2D things in a 3D game (i like them) tons miss things cut out that in modern times put on season passes mostly characters or all games having season passes now. Times change and being a game dev is hard harada, murray and many have said this watch a GDC for insight.
*Capcom did remasters before everyone else kinda* with additional content in past games way back when that would have been DLC now. Sadly since many just want nostalgia bait remakes now.

The most predictable community on the planet is the Halo community. They will reject reality completely just to talk about how something was better back in the day and it is absolutely mindblowing to me
