  • Hello guys, it's Mashtec here..
    today i want to show you an extraordinary retro gaming console from Powkiddy...the A13.
    I was looking out for a console that has the potential to give me the closest experience to some real Arcade gameplay feeling.
    So my main criteria for such a device was, that it can smoothly emulate all the Arcade classics as well as some retro gaming consoles, like the nintendo and super nintendo, SEGA genesis slash megarive up to the Sony Playstation. All this, plus a big screen and full size Arcade Joystick and Button layout is provided by this device. So can the Powkiddy A13 really take you back to the retro gaming feeling of Arcade halls? Let's find out...

    I got mine a few days ago, this is a great device for $100. Its my first dedicated retro gaming device, and I chose it for versatility. The large screen and full stick and USB ports makes this device better for sharing games and crowding around than most handhelds. The fact that you don't need to take over a screen or tote around wires makes it more portable than other consoles. Having an HDMI out and two USB so that you CAN turn it into a full console is amazing. The clamshell/detachable stick design means that you can tote it in a backpack, put it on a shelf/entertainment center, or tuck under your arm so much easier than the A12 and other Neogeo Mini / Sega Astro City type bartops.
    It really is a great system where price / design / specs are just right for what you want this to be - a party/social gaming system. There are flaws, mine has a dust particle and bubble in the screen (not the protector, the screen itself) and the built in menu/system/games are servable and reasonably expandable but wonky to say the least. The hardware is solid, but not blowing off doors. It runs up to Gen4 as perfectly as can be expected for emulation, and PS1 as well.
    Configuring the buttons and controllers is becoming a chore due to the lack of robust settings on the default UI. Particularly if I'm trying to do multiplayer, or games that use all four triggers like Twisted Metal 2. I'm looking into updating the firmware and trying some more tinkering with the setup and curating roms, but out of the box it is a functional but predictably goofy experience.

      Thanks for your great feedback dude. You listed some important points here...appreciated! :)
      Yea, the A13 seems like a huge improvement to the A12 (previous version?). It gives you so much options and the solid hardware setup is a great base. There are already many videos out there about custom fw and button/joystick modding.
      Have a great day and hope to see you back here again :)

    Great review MashTec! I have the A12 and really like it, I had similar problems in that many of the game titles and boxart were in Chinese. Wrote a little python program to create my own game lists, now I love it! The same scripts "may" work on the A13, I don't have one at the present time but may get one just to check it out. I do like the folding screen and the hideaway for the joystick on the A13, seems like a great design decision by Powkiddy. Hopefully in the future, they'll use black plastic instead of red. That was one of my other hang-ups, but still a great little machine. Great review, as always my friend!

      @MashTec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jon! And thanks for your great feedback, dude.
      I fully agree with the color :D this red makes it look very much like a toy instead of the beast machine it is. Black would fit so much better!
      If you have the script or a link to your website with a tutorial how to use it would be awesome. I would really like to link it to this video.

      Hi dude, you want to connect an external HDD to it? To store extra roms or what is your goal? I‘m curious :)
      I don‘t think it works because there is no proper OS running to mount it.

    • @HorthyMiklos92

      @MashTec  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, got it ;) then i may have a better approach for you.
      1. Make an image of the micro SD card (32GB)
      2. Take that image and flash it to a bigger micro SD card (e.g. 128GB) using Win32DiskImager.
      3. Use DiskGenius to expand the partition to make use of the extra space.
      Like this you don‘t block one of the USB ports permanently (were still i doubt that it‘s even possible via USB ports).
      Could that be an alternative for what you plan?

    Would you be able to make a video on adding roms to this device as well as accessing them through the front end?

    • @AverageDrafter
      @AverageDrafter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This th-cam.com/video/EMsj_NFiRCs/w-d-xo.html shows you how to update the ROM list in the menu on the A12, but it also works on the A13. I just do it the quick and easy way:
      1) Read data card in PC, open up the root directory and create a new directory My Roms or whatever.
      2) Put all the roms in whatever file/naming structure will make sense to you and will be legible from the menu of the system. Make sure to use the same naming conventions they used on the pack in roms for each system. BIN for Mega Drive, not MD - that sort of thing.
      3) Put the card back into the A13 and load it up. Go to the FILE menu option. and the roms and other files are directly available without using the By System front end.

    Great video as always! I'm curious to see if you plan on doing any hardware or software mods to it. I like the custom firmware a lot because it basically turns it into a RetroArch machine, but you also lose HDMI output.

    • @MashTec
      @MashTec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Russ ✌🏻i saw the custom firmware on your channel. Great guide btw! The loose of HDMI out is really a major downside for me :( i actually planed to tear the device apart and build it into a wooden "arcade-machine-like" stand, to build my own Arcade machine out of it. There i wanted to install a monitor to that custom box in order to have a bigger screen and mount the control panel with joystick and buttons inside. Might be a future dream yet, but as soon as i find the time, i will start that project and film it, so i can show the process on my channel :)
      A followup video about some software hacks may come i the next few videos, but i have other videos to do first ;)

    Awesome!! Excited to see the review, and can't wait for mine to show up.... Definitely wanna see how well the stock performance is, and what CFW is available out there, so far I only see the Team Ruka offering. The only downside I see to trying that, you lose HDMI functionality, but being such a new device, maybe they will sort that out in some time.
    Very nice video, and happy to see someone really enjoys it, not always so snarky or biting "reviews"..

      Hey dude, i definitely enjoyed it. Never experiences such a cool way of playing old Arcade games ;) Powkiddy did a good job on this machine. High quality Joystick and buttons, and all games i tested so far run super fluid.
      I made this a review and didn‘t go too much in detail. Otherwise i would have spread the 20 minute mark 😂 enjoy, my friend!

    • @willhe5564
      @willhe5564 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MashTec It's kind of bittersweet to me, and makes me a lot more patient now, there's always so much coming out, but this one filled in spots where the Pandora Box DX Mini Arcade let me down... That console is good, but you need to buy extra if you want portability/battery installation, where the A13 gives you a larger screen, and much more freedom. Being tied down to a power outlet, sometimes is a challenge, as not everyone has 15 outlets in a room. I'm well impressed, and better hyped now, I wasn't sure if GBA or handheld games would work on here -- although I do want it and impressed by the arcade features, it's still fun to see how older games would run using joystick and buttons layout, versus small handheld ideas.
      This means we can have mostly any Tetris, Bubble Bobble, lots and lots of Castlevanias, even playing Road Rash!! I was scared about which controllers would work, as the A9 "recognizes" controllers, but only directional inputs, and there is no way to remap your button config... So yeah, the A13 seems well thought out, compared to some prototypes or what (the A12, A9, etc.).
      Another channel shown modifications on adding adhesive weights to the inside, I think was Retro Game Corps - upgrading the stick, buttons, and adding weights in the shell. I'm not sure how top heavy it may be, but well curious to see what we do get for $100. It's great to have HDMI out too, adds a lot of functionality, in case you want to bring some games or movies to a friend's house, or along with you while traveling.
      I'm glad you really like it though, and a fair and honest review - I don't mind 40 minute reviews, I can see why they're needed, but I do see some 4 hour reviews, and I don't have that kind of time to dedicate to watching a video.
      Great work, and hope you stay with good spirit!! Looking forward to the next videos, and I will let ya know if I find anything for quick fixes when mine arrives (It said it could arrive by March 9, so hopefully before that 😂)

    • @MashTec
      @MashTec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Will, you got the points ;)
      Yes, the big battery gives you the freedom to play "wherever you like" and fit's to the mobility concept of this console. For sure you can also plug it to a power supply if you plan to play for many hours. I even had the idea to take this device as basic, to build myself a Arcade retro gaming machine. A stand made of wood, place the device inside, so that the controls reach out so you can access it. Then, install a monitor to it and connect it via HDMi cable...maybe i find the time one day to start that project :D
      Russ from Retro Game Corps already showed how to install the custom firmware and do the modding of buttons and joystick. His channel is awesome and is doing great with his videos ;) I didn't see he installed a plate to make the device heavier, but yes, it would absolutely make sense. It could definitely benefit from a bit more weight on the bottom for better stand, when using it in a intense way.
      Even tough i like the video playback feature, i wouldn't recommend to use it as a video player. As mentioned, the display is not very stable for large viewing angles and the mono sound lowers your fun to watch a movie alot (but bass is really good with it).
      I hope yours will arrive soon. Let me know about your experiences with it. I hope you enjoy it as much as i do. Cheers!

    My only complaint is that there are way too many duplicates on my version of the console. I would say about 40, but the translated dragon quest monster on ps1 made it worth it.

    • @MashTec
      @MashTec  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude, yes you‘re right. If you like to take the time, you can put the sd card of this device into your PC and sort all the duplicates out. You might want to use the extra space for your own games.

    Okay. I might as well mention it on here since this video encouraged me to mod the device to begin with. Sadly I do believe the power button has broken, and I'm not quite sure if it's the switch attached to the motherboard or if its the plastic pushbutton giving me issues. The pushbutton will not "lock" in place once pressed nor will it turn on the device unless pressed in extremely hard. Also, unfortunately the sd card fell out and broke in half. Now, I know you can buy the motherboard for the device separately on Aliexpress and that it supposedly comes preloaded with 9000 games but do I even need to do this? Would it solve anything or is there a simpler solution? Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    • @MashTec
      @MashTec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey dude, i‘m very sorry to hear about the troubles you face.
      Most likely, the mechanic of the button is broken not the mainboard. Still, it‘s a challenge to fix this. Maybe you can fix it with a work-around by pressing something in between or install some own external switch button. It‘s hard to give you a good tip until we can‘t really see what‘s broken :(

    • @MrJamesLowery
      @MrJamesLowery 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MashTec Thanks. I'll have to look back at it. Both the main board switch and the main board itself can be ordered from Aliexpress, but I can't find the red plastic pushbutton anywhere and its that that won't stay in place or give off tension when pressed. I'm not sure if I broke something off of the main board switch/button for the power or for the red pushbutton.

    • @MashTec
      @MashTec  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude, unfortunately not. The default firmware has no options to make changes to the emulation or video settings, to get rid of screen tearing. Actually i did only see this for games i tested using the FBA emulator.
