I found your channel after watching the "black box" video. It is so refreshing to finally meet someone with almost the exact same thought patterns as me. Thank you for making this video, means a lot.
"Be very, very careful with what you do, and think hard about it." Bro played the ad right after to really sink in that thought. Its true, you often drop nuggets of truth like this in your vids.
Extroverts might draw more energy from praise from others, and introverts might get more satisfaction from a goal achieved through hard work. When I try to pat myself on the back by recognising the work I put in, it tends to worsen the bias, because I feel like I have wasted all that time on something so small. I find more pleasure in getting praise from others because their judgement are more likely to be unbiased and objective. This is a flaw and I realise that.
Fear of loss has a big impact on this, "I needa keep grinding or else i'll fall behind and that'll hurt my ego". Just realise that a temporary loss doesn't make you worse in the long term. take a break in order to see the direction you are headed. A lot of the time it's about taking time in order to find a faster route than to "just keep going" Think of a pirate stopping to use his telescope, that temporary break in order to use his telescope causes him/her to stop think and process where his ship is headed. and then the re-directioning accordingly to get his/her ship the treasure quicker makes him find it before the other pirate who's co-ordinates are inaccurate.
I have opposite problem. I do only things that my parents force me to do and it is studying computer science at university. I don't have any goals that are important for me. Just survival in current situation and no planning.
What makes me happy, is when my personal evaluation is shared by other people. As an athlete, my achievements were overvalued: I didn’t try hard, but succeeded anyways. Now as a physics student I cannot convey my success. Despite in which detail and precision I learned, my progress looks unassuming and slow. Also despite being happy with my know how, it is very unfulfilling not being able to proof or communicate it. But I am feel proud for my future outlook and with good reason. I will bring positive change to my society supporting low cost education for everyone. Something’s you can always be proud of. Gamification doesn’t seem normal in life. There are few other things in life so focused compared to MMR coding.
very logical and articulate way of describing this issue. when someone first brought up this idea of me diminishing my accomplishments while putting the same goal on a pedestal months past it was such a new realization to me, still trying to take the steps to fix but thinking more positively as much as it feels like huffing copium now will help i think. i wonder if its common for the ppl that experience this to grow up with strict parents that diminish any accomplishment and suppress enjoyment towards activities and constantly compare their kid to others (eg putting your kid into piano classes not because you want them to develop a love for music, but rather you want to force them to get a certain skill level) i always feel like even if i am feeling positive in the moment i need to bring myself a step down and remind myself im not even in the top 50th percentile of the skill im working on which makes me want to give up. it’s concerning that even someone whos like a 98th percentile competitive programming is affected by this
Bro I finished changed my career path to DevOps to make more money, finished the class as valedictorian, got the job, made some money, and I was depressed all the way through. I got my ex to talk to me again and I was still depressed. Thank you for making this video, I really needed some perspective on this, I’ve been afraid to even apply to jobs and learn new skills because of the amount of pressure I placed on myself to just be good
this video really gives a voice to my problem. I always feel like i dont have accomplishments and lost motivation to move forward adn achieve my goals. ill definetely try to implement the strategieis you mentioned like putting more weight and pride in my accomplishments
Hey Colin, nice videos, they are like a therapeutic reassurance telling me I am not a failure. Maybe a next video suggestion: Do you have anything to say about perfectionism, or do you think you would be just repeating what others have already said?
Superpower to help to solve this -> gratitude (remind yourself of what you are grateful, what you have achieved, what you think is great in life) - sounds cheesy but really helped me to just be happier in general. The concept descripted in the video reminded me of the hedonic treadmill, which describes that our mind naturally adopts new things and takes them for granted and being grateful is the superpower to combat that because it reminds you of all the things that you forgot you even had
I really like your videos, i don't recall exactly wich one is where you say is important to actually think about a solution instead of looking for the resolution of someone else. That. Omg. It changed my vision for complete, it may sound cliche (and funny) but now I actually think for myself, and I allow me try all kind of possible solutions before looking it in somewhere. It really make me a better thinker. Thanks. :) (English is not my first language, sorry if it is something wrong :p)
You know imma subscribe. You have helped me deal with mental bullshit in a diagramatical, programmable and fun way than any motivational speaker 🔊😅ever has. You know that saying life is like a video game. I kinda believe that now. 😊. Keep up the good work 👍 💯.
There're 3 different goals and they should be treated differently with different priorities. 1. small/short-term goals in the span of lifetime (which is this video talks about) 2. mile-stone/mid-term goal in the span of lifetime. This is the key thing that every single one needs to be able to earn themselves a territory while entering the age of 20 to 30 (skillset or pass down wealth that can make necessary income to live on the earth without thinking of any death/illness situation). Otherwise, there's less chance to gain happiness. 3. meaning of life/life-term goal, that when you die, you think of you're not wasted the entire life.
I like the vid and the shared ideas! Thanks! It was cool to hear the ideas at the stage I am now 'cause I feel like I'm getting too abscessed with idea "not to waste to much time, better keep solving some few more code challenges" :) As you aptly mentioned in the vid some times it gets too toxic, so the vid is good trigger for me to decide not to beat myself up
Loved the video Collin ... Keep em coming. It was really useful and know that your created content has not even in a slightly measure gone worthless. Loved the video. I'm no one to tell you to choose happiness as well... But when you said you were heavily depressed still fine... I think you may also think of this in a long term prospect as we humans are also time inconsistent and don't think of the mental state we would be in after 10-20 years from now if we continued to keep being close to the same mental state that we are in right now. Is really choosing success and being *heavily* depressed a good strategy for long term process?! Hope you would make the right decision for yourself ! Have a great day ! 🤗
The area on how to control the bias, during your explanation, I got immediately reminded of the grand old technique of giving a damn. I appreciate you making this video, as I have been needing this.
Deep dive into chaos Smash it all up See the pieces from a new Angle Rebuilt Relearn Refeel Refuel Do it again Wonder about the blunder. How did I live through that?
Sorry!! This is an information video but you look good. Your unconscious mind video I have watched, I got to know that you speak really well in each video. How are you doing this. My speaking skills sucks and i face alot of difficultly in relationships with people. Many good things I have done. Probably I am biased that's why I'm focusing on bad things. But in all trouble I know my wish to connect more people deeply. If you are reading this comment, I wish I could get a chance to connect with you 😇
So bias can be tied to pain/pleasure balance, right? You can accept the pain of going through the next goals due to bias. But too much will make you unhappy, and too little bias slows the process of improvement, gives temporary satisfaction, so it can also make you unhappy in the long term.
Can't help thinking, So when a relationship gets old and isn't quite as exciting(normal) , the proper bias is to what? Look at the past and stay because of it? Or induce jealousy in other people and glorify yourself in it, or find someone new (for some that aren't like doves just as I am). I don't really know. But the directed graphs get crazy.
@@s4ltokyo yeap, that's for people that aren't like doves just as I'd like to think myself (see previous comment)to be until proven otherwise. I have seen people that really mean it when they say that they wouldn't leave just because of such a trivial matter, but many end betraying their partners. Not because they're evil but it just happened. Of course we can also say that perhaps their reincarnation in this life is an evil hearted one, while ours in this life isn't, maybe the next. But Christianity, other religions and nature debase that.
💀💀Heavily depressed 💀💀 I have that problem but it's reaching an extrem, I can't sleep sometimes, and the problem it's that I haven't even donde that much. Dk what to do really.
I think this bias works when you are godless. from the time I became religious person to now, I don't remember experiencing what you're describing even though I've achieved many things, maybe what you're describing bias is religiously called ungratefulness.
Do you have any tips on stopping negative thoughts? Like Whenever I talk to someone or think about something My mind just automatically starts talking negativily about that particular thing. This sucks because I try my best to fight against my mind and my mental power gets used up and then I get tired and can't study
There’s no way to stop negative thoughts per se. However there’s two things you can do. Firstly, try not to put yourself in a situation which you always get those negative thoughts in, it also helps to be physically healthy(eat decently, get enough sleep blah blah blah). However, some things just can’t be prevented, or maybe you can’t predict them. If that’s the case, and you end up having negative thoughts, don’t try to stop having them. If I tell you to stop thinking about a blue elephant, you’ll think even more about it. The trick is to focus on something else, ideally something that is happening in physical reality(eg observing, doing something), or fully focus on what the other person is saying
Quick feedback on video format : love the content, but comes off as a little bit verbose. I’m a bit older than Colin, and while nowhere near as accomplished as Colin in the world of competitive programming, I can guarantee this kind of meta-observations about yourself periodically really helps stabilize yourself mentally & emotionally. I would caution against dwelling too much on these though - often it’s good to portion time for introspection, but not let it take over your life. I came initially for the competitive algorithm content, but finding myself nourished by high-quality videos like this! Thank you :)
the color is a representation of a stage of progress, giving you something to strive for; and it works as a useful ranking system. It's just like how 'MARIO CORONA' is a bunch of shapes we call 'letters' but are still inherently meaningless shapes.
I have developed sufficient intuition to know that this video was life-changing without watching it, great work
Top humour.

Honestly the self-berating with the text is saddening. And an extremely good example of what this video is talking about too!
This channel came out of nowhere for me and every video is absolute flames 🔥
"Be very, very careful with what you do, and think hard about it." Bro played the ad right after to really sink in that thought. Its true, you often drop nuggets of truth like this in your vids.
I actually really like your videos that talk about the mental side of competitive programming more than the programming itself
Extroverts might draw more energy from praise from others, and introverts might get more satisfaction from a goal achieved through hard work. Just looking at the title of this video changed my life. God bless you and keep it up!!!
You are awesome self-aware dude. Thank you for being on this planet.

How does this only have 9.5k views is astounding to me. You've taught me something so valuable about goal-oriented mindset. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this amazing video i realized i am stuck in this bias loop with my goals
very logical and articulate way of describing this issue. when someone first brought up this idea of me diminishing my accomplishments while putting the same goal on a pedestal months past it was such a new realization to me, still trying to take the steps to fix but thinking more positively as much as it feels like huffing copium now will help i think.

My parents did none of those things and I still feel like shit, so it's probably not that.
Please continue to create more videos, you're awesome and inspirational!
1000x better than any other channel on these subjects!
Thank you dude
Left me with a lot to try to notice about my own thoughts 💭
so to put it simple, keep balance between getting cocky and being too hursh for yourself

How to control your bias....great question
Really happy you exist 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 thank you for this video
Ngl needed this after receiving 20 rejection offers for a first engineering internship, thx man 😢
Thank you Donut Man. Off I go to delude myself!
Just like money bruh. We want to get infinitely richer, but at the same time also appreciate where we came from, so we can be happy.
you can at any point find hundreds of things to complain about or be grateful for and the choice is completely under your control
You're basically giving people tips on fine-tuning the neural networks we carry around in our heads
hey, colin loved your brain related videos especially the blackbox one, yeah thanks a lot man
This happens to me but from other people's perspective. People think I'm naturally gifted so all my hard work basically gets devalued.
I'd love to see a collab with Healthygamergg. I think you have many insights that would be useful to share there!
Great video, insightful. You are a genius, original thinker,I hope your messages will inspire millions in future.

Thanks for the reminder man. Helped a lot really :D
This is why I suck at resumes and job interviews. I just do my job and don't hink I am doing anything special

Wouldn't apply this sort of logic to people or relationships. You just don't discard a person due to lack of excitement.
