The sheer fact that the Mayor cannot pronounce Whakatane properly is ignorance in itself. What angers me the most is how some Pakeha have no concept of "wahi tapu" nor do they care. What also confuses me, is who in their right mind is going to put their whanau in a retirement village that is right next to an urupa? "You're old Mum/Dad. How about spending the remainder of your life right next to a cemetery"?
Even though Maori are made out to be recognised more so now than ever before, considerations of our opinions, beliefs, and culture are continually undermined by projects like this. To Mr Young from Hoppers Development, we do not need you to reassure us of the promises that you cannot keep. Yes you are correct, we are afraid of the unknown, we are afraid of what will happen if we let projects like this go ahead, we are afraid of losing our wahi tapu and our cultural identity along with it. There is a similar marina project wanting to go ahead on Waiheke Island, in Matiatia bay.
This has nothing to do with the fear of the unknown. The problem is that we do know. We've been through this before. Had promises of jobs, that our rights would be preserved, it's all the same old lies and disappointment.
There's a reason councils always push to build new marinas even though it's the last thing communities need, its because it's practically a golden handshake with the wealthy and a way to make event more parts of aotearoa a no go zone for maori,
I find it hard to believe this could go ahead without problems. Local community is local, builders arent going to sign up and anyone out of town will probably have a very hard time.. don't see it happening.. hiring security to protect these sites will make this expensive and unproductive.
Kia kaha Renee, I have wonderful memories of aunty Irene and Uncle Steve! Beautiful neighbours. Opihi belongs to the people of Whakatane, council can go build some where else...
All about the money aye Tony! Digging up the urupa, disrespectful, money hungry, disgusting and not to mention tapu as! MAKE A PETITION! PLENTY WILL SIGN!
That is no good no respect tu the maori tikanga you can't do that you don't build something on the land that don't belong tu pakiha it maori land Maori wai maori whenua

You need jobs before you expand. Whakatane got no jobs. Thats why your census dropped.
The colonial horror show continues.
