I can't stand the way people vilify Mary Bell, chalking it up to her being a ~psychopath~ who was born evil. People imagine Mary as this demonic figure, incapable of feeling emotion or caring about anyone else's life. People *want* her to be this cold-blooded natural-born monster, so they can easily explain her crimes away as terrifying stories of inhumanity. But the reality is that Mary's crimes were a tragic but deeply human response to a lifetime of brutal abuse and inescapable trauma that no one put a stop to.
Mary's story is frightening not because she's some kind of grotesque bogeyman, but because any child who had to endure what she endured could "snap" and do unthinkable things to innocents. Mary only succeeded in killing because of the extraordinary circumstances she found herself in, where no one noticed her behavior and intervened in the years leading up to her attacks, and more importantly, no one knew or cared about the nightmare she was living at home.
Her mother had tried to murder her at least six times by the time she was 4. She was brutally physically abused by both parents, and more importantly, Mary's mother forced her into sex work when she was little older than a toddler. For years and years, Mary was sadistically sexually abused by countless adult men. Years of severe complex trauma led to Mary's aggressive outbursts.
I don't think Mary was ever a 'psychopath' at all; I think she was a deeply traumatized child with severe dissociative symptoms who ended up resorting to violence as a way of symbolically gaining any control over her life and her body. Does this justify her murders? No, of course not, but I also think she can in no way be held responsible for them either. The murders themselves were horrific, senseless and deeply tragic, but Mary (like any 10-year-old in this situation) did not understand the seriousness of her actions, nor did she know that violence was wrong. After all the torture, the rapes, the murder attempts her mother put her through, violence became a sickeningly normal part of life for Mary.
It is so much easier to see Mary Bell's story as a singular grotesque case of inhumanity than to confront the reality of child abuse and its deep psychological consequences. It is so much easier for us to scapegoat individuals for their actions than it is to interrogate the role of violence in our society and see how it is systematically used to punish and oppress. But ironically, in doing so, by turning Mary Bell into a monster, we stoop to the inhumanity of denying this hurt child the compassion she deserved. Fortunately, Mary wasn't simply locked in a cell to rot; through some miracle, she was given a second chance, and now she lives quietly like anyone else, giving her daughter and her granddaughter the kind of childhood she was so cruelly denied.

@@x.aylo.x I do. I think it is not the only reason for someone being labeled a psychopath but it os surely a 'helping factor' - In Mary's case I think her very poor upbringing (parents, era, town, social structure, all of this was rubbish) brought out something that has been there and would have maybe under better circumstances never come into fruition.
I think she did the absoluty wrong thing and should be punsihed, however I think we should also keep in mind that she was still very much a child. A child that was mentally not even able to comprehend a lot of things it did, she probably responed in the only way she learned to: with violence. And experiencing power in choking someone might be a very exstatic feeling for someone who is so weak and helpless in the rest of his life. Does this make any of her actions okay? Certainly not. But it helps to understand.
I truly believe they did the right in Mary Bells case, granting her and her family anonymity. She had not been prepared after practically growing up in a prison to live in the outside world and sources report she said after her release that she would always stay "imprisoned by guilt and remorse" - she has as far as anyone knows never reoffended. So I truly believe she is no threat to the outside world anymore and that her crime and psychopathic state lie years behind her.

Scarlet Ascensio no one says it gives them the right to kill. We try to analyze in order to maybe prevent at least some cases by recognizing the symptoms early. It's not about justifying, it's about understanding. Also, poor upbringing does not have to relate to the financial wellbeing of the parents. One thing people discount about the mother us her obvious mental health issues and she was probably abused if she did it to her own child. She could’ve had severe post natal depression which is why she kept trying to kill her daughter. Her life was very much likely one of abuse and for her to be a prostitute and having a child at 17 she obviously had it hard herself. It’s beyond what we know. Her own mother could’ve been forced into prostitution as a child herself, Mary could’ve been a child born from rape.. maybe that’s why she wanted to kill her. It’s never as simple as what it seems.

Hi Eleanor... great video. I grew up in scotswood on the next street along from mary. I was born in '70 so after the fact but still remember that the talk went on for years. my mam used to threaten me that mary bell would get me if i didnt do what i was told lol. used to scare the hell out of myself and my mates who were told the same by their parents. Youre right they did pull down alot of the old houses and factories but the area wasnt redeveloped until way into the 80s so the wastelands and piles of rubble were our playgrounds of the 70s. Betty stayed there for a few years but the resentment grew and i remember when she did move when i was about 7 or 8 and we used to play dares in the derilict house ... marys bedroom was terrifying.. until it was burned out in the end then the last of the area was pulled down in the 80s. Its all changed now completely with industrial units and a riverside pedestrian bit along the tyne.
It wasnt a bad childhood really and yeah we were poor and i really do mean poor and it was dangerous and we were given alot of freedom to roam and play completely unsupervised but so did every kid back then and had done for decades, centuries really. it taught resiliance.
Its interesting because i havnt thought of mary bell for donkeys but i wonder if it had any bearing on what i do for work. im a childrens adventure therapist, we take children from extreme backgrounds on a 2 month residential and do loads of adventurous mad stuff with them and use it as a basis for cbt. i have my reasons for doing the work i do but i wonder now if theres maybe a smidgin of influence in there somewhere...
anyway great video and keep up the good work
    Paul :)

      @youryxqi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +71

I just looked this up and this is what I found: Mary Bell was not inspiration for The Orphan but instead a case from Czech Republic in 2007. A couple set up a CCTV camera in their child's room and waited for the child to go to sleep and then saw one of the screens where a camera was in the basement and saw a young boy in a cage (It had accidentally connected to the next door neighbour's CCTV camera in the basement) and recognised the child as the neighbour's son Ondrej. So they asap called the police and they broke into the house of where the basement camera was situated and found 2 young naked boys in a cage tortured and a young girl by the cage unharmed and crying hysterically and calling for help. The two boys were 10 year old Jakub and 8 year old brother Ondrej, both with the mother of Klara Mauerova. The girl was 12 year old Anička, adopted by Klara. Klara was arrested with sister Katerina who was living with them. The two boys had been seriously tortured for at least a year because of a small seceret movement called the Grail Messages.
Klara Mauerova had developed as a child the obsession that God had chosen her to accomplish great tasks, sister Katerina developed the same idea. Few years later, Klara was married and had 2 kids (The boys) and was actually known to be a caring and loving mother by those who knew her. She later decided to give University a go and there she met Barbora Skrlova: A girl with a criminal record, known to be quite "weird" and had a record of being put into several mental institutions. She was actually the daughter of the original leader of the Grail Movement which was how Klara learnt about it (through Barbora). As she was already obsessed with this idea that God had chosen her to do "great tasks" she joined with no hesitation and quickly her sister Katerina did too. After this, Klara had completely changed after her husband left home, stating this. After he left, Katerina and Barbora immediatly moved in. With Barbora around them pretty much 24/7 now, they greatly influenced from her behaviour and started to attach to the other bizarre ideas of the Grail Movement. They begun to physically do things soon later and started with their first and only victims: Jakub and Ondrej, Klara's 2 children. They both them in a small iron cage, naked and in the dark basement. They couldn't go to the toilet to had to urinate in the cage, had no food and were very often beaten and tortured (torture method decided by Barbora). This included things from having a cigarette put out on them to electric shock, whipping, waterboarding and sexual harrassment. Later, Barbora decided to try something new so the fed the 2 boys until they became chubby. After this, Katerina and Barbora brought Ondrej, fixed him to the table as the mother begun to slice skin off of his leg with a knife and all 3 began to eat it, laughing at the boy's crying. 2 months later, the same was carried out with Jakub except with the skin on his hand but this time forced Jakub to also eat his own skin. This went on for months but ended because of the accidental connection to the Mauerova household basement.
NOW that was a lot of back story and has nothing to do with the Orphan is what I thought but we never heard about the 12 year old adopted girl Anička. That's because she was actually 34 year old, Barbora Skrlova. She had a rare condition caused by slow physical growth. She commited several crimes with generally breaking into some sort of crime scene, but was always let free because of the innocent, young girl character she played. Since to rescue of the 2 boys, Barbora had been there for 2 years and whenever someone would come over, she acted as 12 year old Anička, Klara's adopted daughter. When the police showed up, she sensed the forces around the house just when they got there so got on the ground and started crying, her acting was described as very convincing. Because at the scene she acted as Anička, she was actually put in a Child Care Centre but later escaped. Klara was sentenced to 9 years in prison and Katerina 10 years.
After Barbora escaped, she slipped to Norway, cut her hair and pretended to be a 10 year old boy called Adam. Her acting was "so real" she ended up enrolling in secondary school with a fake id. She was later caugh after teachers and students saw her drawing a violent image in art class with seven injured and screaming children, no.7 of the children actually being himself/Barbora.
After being caught, she was brought back to Czech Republic and sentenced to 5 years (shirt sentence thought to be because she was mentally ill and was most likely abused by her father as a child)
THAT'S IT. I'm really sorry it took long. I found it on a website called Kabbos if you want more detail

“ Newcastle in England “ ...okayy
“ grew up in a poor town called scotswood” *GREAT just great*😳😳
Ps: if you like story times read on, because this one hits home for me. Scotswood isn’t a town it’s just an estate really , it’s mostly council houses but there has been some regenerations in the area. Some parts were posher than others but some bits were really ran down. It’s about a 10 minute bus ride into Newcastle city centre so pretty much the outskirts. I did actually make a comment a few years back on this video with my old account but I’m not sure if it was deleted or if it’s just buried in the comments somewhere. Anyway im not sure if many people will see this but ... Mary lived very close to my family she may have even lived on the same street as a kid but I’m not totally sure. One afternoon she came working herself at my Nanas house asking to walk my uncle (my mams older brother) who was around 3 at the time. My nana never really liked her as she was well known for causing trouble with neighbours and just generally being cruel to other children. My nana told her she wasnt allowed to take my uncle for a walk and told her to stop working herself and go home. Mary reacted really nastily she swore at my grandparents and stormed off and it was b slurs and f slurs she was shouting. It was around this time maybe a few days later I’m not totally sure on the time span, one of those boys went missing. Another story my older aunties have told me is that previously to the killings she also went to primary school with 3 of my aunties and was in one of my aunties classes, the youngest out of the 3 aunties was very rough of ready sort of speak and as a child would never let any one pick on her but she was TERRIFIED of Mary. In the school they used to keep small pets such as rabbits , Guinea pigs etc and it was my aunties turn to feed and look after the animals , however Mary locked her in the cupboard and blocked her in so she couldn’t get out and just left her there. It took for my older auntie to get her out of the cupboard and have a go at Mary which I think ended up in a physical fight with her, to actually calm my other auntie (the one who she locked in) down , whilst mary just stood there sniggering. They always knew that there was something up with her after that and kept away from her. After the murders my uncles and aunties weren’t allowed to play down near the Tin Lizzy as it was called , and naturally all of the parents in the area had there guards up. After all it was the 60s, scotchy is the type of area were every one knows every one, your mams best friend was your auntie and her kids were your cousins, you could go to bed with the door unlocked it was a very tight knit little community. It certainly shocked the neighborhood , it’s still a story which chills people today. Even more scary since she has a whole new identity and I don’t know how true it is but a lot of people have claimed to have seen her, because they all say there’s no mistaking her, obviously that can’t be proven. It’s just so incredibly sad what went on, breaks my heart it really does, it’s beyond sad. It’s also so scary the fact that it hits so close to home usually documentaries are never Newcastle based never mind a neighbouring estate. By the way obviously I personally can’t prove if the stories family told me are true after they happened waaaaaaay before I was born. But my nana always used to tell me stories about her coming to the door working my grandparents...
