  • We left carrots in the ground almost twice as long as their maturity which was about 70 days total. We wanted to see what would happen, and the reward was well worth the risk. Check out our new clothing line! http:www.freshpickedapparel.com

Carrots are crazy, forget the maturity date on the package. I left one by accident over winter and picked it at about 200 days since planting and it was the best carrot I ever got

I've never counted days for carrots, I always just leave them in the garden and pick them when I want to eat them :)

I planted a whole package of carrot seeds one fall that I had gotten at Walmart for 10 cents on closeout. Didn't think that they would even grow but made 4 small rows anyway and was actually quite surprised at how many nice carrots I harvested. I don't even know what kind they were but the following spring I was rewarded with another small harvest from ones I missed the previous fall. Weathered (pun intended) the winter temperatures and were quite sweet and crunchy. Best 10 cents I ever spent.

for me personally ive often found that the maturity date on carrot seed packages just specify the minimum edible size they would be by then.

Luke, pick the bigger ones and leave the smalls to continue growing. I ignore maturity date in regards to carrots, and try to leave them as long as possible. If I can make it to the first frost, those are by far the tastiest carrots of the season.

Don't worry about maturation date; carrots are biennials. You can leave them in the ground and harvest them right up until the ground freezes (Thanksgiving for us). The carrots will get sweeter as they enter winter since they use sugar as an kind of antifreeze. As an experiment, try leaving some over the winter and harvest them before greenup next spring.

I find carrots easy to grow. The only issue I've had is how to get them to germinate. I just sow a lot of seeds in my well-watered raised beds with a thick layer of compost then cover them with old carpet or layers of cardboard then check them after two weeks to see if any have germinated. If they have, I simply remove the cover then keep them watered. I don't pay any attention to the info on the seed packets. I just feel around to see if there are any reasonably-sized carrots and pull them. Small ones remain until they're "usable". I've even left some in the garden when the soil was rock-hard frozen. When the soil thaws, I can harvest even more. I find it that simple. Don't obsess in the garden.

As a first time gardener, I would really benefit from a video on gardener intuition so I can begin to develop one myself.😊

Yes, would like to see that video. Maybe talk about what to look for in various root veggies in order to determine if longer soil time is needed. Eg pulling samples, looking at tops in soil, etc.

THAT is a happy carrot! Haha! I love watching you harvest your crops. Look how happy you are! Thank you for sharing. My carrots and radishes grew in partial shade so they have been in the ground for... a while. I hope my crop looks as happy as yours when I dig it up.

This is such fun watching you pull carrots! You're so happy! It's one of my favourite things to do in the garden, each one is a surprise! I planted Atomic Red, Scarlet Nantes and Rainbow Mix. The Rainbows grow white, yellow, light orange, dark orange, red, purple. I didn't mix up my varieties. I put little signs to know which was where. I leave half my carrots in until after a couple light frosts,~mid September. Makes them even sweeter.
