      In a FB gardening group I'm in, I recently seen a lot of people say they just plant and water and they grow without doing much else. I've always struggled with them, and I attribute it to my climate. I'm guessing these people are in mild climates with regular rain. I'm starting mine now and we've been in the 100+F with no rain.

  • @bingster-223

    Carrots are the crop I have the most failures with. Last year was my most successful year ever. This year most of mine have been small. I planted them every couple of weeks so I still have chances for some good ones. I've had the most success with Long Imperators and color mix.🥕🥕🥕 no worries though I can get gigantic carrots at our local Amish markets for $0.59 to $0.79 a pound lol.

    I grew carrots in one of my 11.5 gallon containers. In the past when I sowed them in the ground something chewed the tops off. I actually thinned the carrots and replanted them with a pencil hole and most grew. They were the largest and best tasting ever. One was about 1.5 inches in diameter and more than a foot long in my compost based large container. I also learned they get sweeter and tastier if harvested from frozen soil. Thanks Luke! May the Lord bless you and yours.

    • @DebRoo11

      Maneuvers are very high in nitrogen and will likely cause "hairy" and stubby roots. If you can find a good compost mix you'll be much better off for root crops.

I don’t know what it was doing because she had a lot of property, but unfortunately, no gardens. I tried to convince her to grow a small garden or rent her property for a community garden and she said she didn’t want to. She’s 80 and didn’t want extra responsibility. Oh well I tried.🤷🏼‍♀️

    For crop rotation purposes, if a home gardener is rotating yearly, but also planting for fall, do you do your rotation for next year based off the main crop you grew in the spot or off the short term crop you grew for fall? For example, if I had an early crop of carrots in a spot, then had time to plant a small crop of peas for fall/early winter, next season, is it best to rotate that spot for the next crop based off the early crop of carrots or the peas- meaning I would want to grow a leafy crop in that spot next season? Thank you!

  • @AnenLaylle7023
    @AnenLaylle7023 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been farming for many years and the hardest crop for me to grow here in South Carolina for profit is carrots. The germination is just random. I tried seeding some pelleted seed about 15 days ago and got 30% germination. Plowed the entire 100 foot row under and I am waiting till the weather cools off and using normal carrot seed and over seeding as I usually do.
    Another trick for carrot germination in rows is to backfill the furrows with potting mix, not your native soil, which will probably want to crust over by the time the carrots come up. Also, plant them in bands, not straight lines.
    I do not recommend the pelleted seed. They either work perfectly or they don't work at all.

    Last year was the first time I tried carrots. I grew them in a 10 gal. grow bag and planted them in the late summer. A whole lot sprouted but then died off (south Texas and still too hot.). However, I had sowed a lot of seeds and a second bunch germinated. I left them out all winter (did bring them inside for the few freezes we had last winter) and ended up with some of the best carrots I’ve ever had in March. This year, I plan to do it again, but more than one grow bag and I’m waiting for the heat to lesson!🥵

    Anyone have problems keeping squirrels out of your newly planted raised beds? Lol I ended up having to put netting over my raised beds, and used clips to attach the netting to the chicken wire surrounding my beds. It almost didn't work. A squirrel still got in there 1 time, and got trapped, I had to let it out. I think it scared it so bad, it must hsve told his other squirrel buddies, because I haven't had a problem since lol. Just wondering if anyone had any other solutions. I've tried hot pepper, and all that jazz, with no results. My next step was going to be putting chicken wire over the top.

    I have yet to grow 'real' carrots. We paid for good seeds. They germinate just fine. We have tons of greens. We did almost 50% perlite this year. And yet - we still have no carrots. I keep trying, although I have lost faith that they'll grow. [EDIT to add} And we water correctly. We fertilize correctly.

    • @DebRoo11
      @DebRoo11 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, np fertilizer is better than too much with carrots. Are you amending with compost or manure? Manure is too high in nitrogen for most root crops but good for top crops like spinach, lettuce etc.

    I haven't been able to get anything to grow over 4" tihs year (what little bit even survived that long). My hot pepper plants haven't grown since I put them in the garden in June. Fert hasn't helped nor Weed Tea. Sunflowers, all died at about 4" tall. Nusturtium has lived but not developed more than a handful of leaves. Marigolds that survived haven't grown in over a month.
    Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks Luke. Can I do a fall crop of carrots?

    • @joesqudy
      @joesqudy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Luke would say “yes.” Carrots can also be overwintered in the soil if you don’t want to pick them, providing the weather allows it. (As I understand, I believe carrots can take a light frost, that you might want to double check.) But as long as you have enough days to grow before the frost, I think you would be fine in starting a fall crop. I hope this helps somebody. ❌⭕️🙏🏽♥️

      Carrots are bi-annual. If you leave them over winter, next year you will have flowering carrots that will produce seeds, but you will not get a carrot next year. Let them flower and go to seed and you can plant those seeds the following year.

      @@legiomariae4961 I left my carrots (Planted in September) last year and harvested in February and they were fine. I think if you leave them any longer they will def go to seed. I purposely left some and that’s exactly what happened. Thanks for the additional info. ❌⭕️🙏🏽♥️

    Is it too late to plant now for a fall harvest in Ohio?

    Luke I live in SC and have yet to get carrots to grow. I did get a new raised bed garden built this year and everything died. But we have had 6 weeks straight of 90+ to 112 temps and no rain. But last year they never grew at all. Any tips. Thank you. I am shooting for first of Sept to plant.

      Now, I'm sure I did it wrong but last year I planted in October. They were tiny until march and then they took off

    Is it possible to put a fall carrot crop in?

    My lord those are some seriously small carrots. If you wanna see well grown carrots, they don't come better than from Rachel at That 1870's Homestead and Jenna at Growfully with Jenna. Truly, they're enviable.

      The type of carrot makes a huge difference on their sizing - he is showing Danvers type which are smaller carrots. There are some that are wide but only 2” tall……personally, I don’t find the larger varieties very sweet for eating fresh…..best saved for soups and stews

      I agree 😬 even my danvers are longer than these. Not sure if hes harvesting too soon or what. Some good generic info though. But i wouldnt get too excited about these ones 😅

    Have you ever used Milorganite slow release fertilizer

      Are you aware that Milorganite is a product made from sludge sewage from Milwaukee? I used to used to sprinkle it around my veggie garden to keep the rabbits away until I learned what it was.

      Storage type (winter) carrots are possible to sow in the fall. But you ll need a good winter which is not fluctuating much between frozen and thawing cycles. Also note that you ll need a good bed which will not have much weeds.. otherwise in the spring when carrots sprout and the weeds appear too n u start pulling the weeds you might mess up ur tiny carrots too 😛

    Carrots are one of the most frustrating vegetables to grow. Anybody that says it is easy is wrong. If you follow these steps your carrots have a good chance of coming up. The problem is thinning them. , Imagine being on your knees thinning a micro forest of carrots. If you are determined to grow carrots get pelletized seeds or seed tape. At least you won't waste half your crop.

    • @DebRoo11
      @DebRoo11 ปีที่แล้ว

      We eat our thinned carrot tops. They actually have four times the amount of vitamin C that the actual carrot root and many other vitamins nutrients and minerals. They taste between mild parsley and carrot. Add them to potato or egg salads, as a garnish, in salads, in soups.... 🫣 Dont waste them. You also dont have to thin all at once
