  • If livebearers are the easiest fish to breed, Medaka rice fish are a very close second. I acquired a nice strain of Youkihi Medaka from April's Aquarium and wanted to make sure I had some fry before I sent them out to the deck pond. Everything went according to plan. I have Medaka fry growing in the house to preserve the strain and adults showing off and breeding in the deck pond. I also added Rhadnocentrus ornatus (Teewah Creek) and Honey Blue Eyes (Pseudomugil mellis) to the deck pond. Hoping for some eggs from these guys too!
I fill the little egg hatching containers (5"x3"x3") 3/4 full of tank water and add 1/2 drop of methylene blue. The eggs hatch within a couple weeks. The fry are very easy to raise and accept dry foods immediately, live is preferred, but they aren't fussy.
    Water temperature 70-74 F. PH = 7.8 Total Hardness (mg CaCO3/L) = 250 mg/L
