it can be a sign of creativity if the creator of a song sings it differently in one live situation. many are doing it. but it wouldn't be appropriate if tom chaplin would interpret one song from another band differently. his own songs he can sing as he like.

I told all my friends, after I bought Keane's second album, "under the iron sea" that he could fill in for Freddy!!!! They laughed at me! Years later I got to show them this and watch them eat their words!!! Even the band said they never heard Freddy perform it that well live!! The guy is Vocally Freddy reborn!!!

Brian May’s reaction at the end of this clip says it all: this was an excellent performance as a whole and everyone loved it, including the other musicians. Tom Chaplin did not try to copy Freddie, but made his own version of “It’s a hard life” and I think that he did an incredible job. Well done!

Brian May was one of those (is?) geniuses who always approached it from the thinker's angle. Almost never hear a bunch of noise out of him. Pure notes and melodies. Yeah, I was very impressed with Tom's performance in this vid. He just walked out and nailed it from the first note. Takes some balls and skill to do that, I say.

To all of you wondering why he said it had never been perfomed live, Tom clarified this comment in a recent interview. He said it had not been performed live since Freddy died, "Nobody could hit the notes". Well, Tom certainly did!!
