To each, his own. Me, I thought Lewis was hilarious back in the day. The Nutty Professor, and the Bellhop are both innovative films and classics in their own right.
Like Mr. Bean, the French LOVED him! When I was a kid in the 50's, he was a comic GOD. Yes, he did have ego issues and always wanted to be in control. It was obvious when Dean split and wanted to be on his own as Jerry's obsessiveness was causing problems. Jerry sort of ran his "crazy kid" character into the ground and broke it off as he aged but kept playing this same character but that is what the people wanted. Jerry, being a shrewd businessman knew his worth though no matter how ridiculous it got. He played it to the limit and over the limit cause it was saleable. It wasn't till his yearly telethons that we the public really got to see him as he was. People who spent a whole year collecting money for "Jerry's Kids" would want to get on the show and have the recognition that they deserved but you could tell that Jerry was just phoning in his sincerity. YES!!!!!!!!!!!! He did do good works but it didn't play well with his "image". Later he used the show as a sort of "I'll give you a chance to show your new talent IF you give me something in return". I'm sure there were a lot of people who performed on the show that really didn't want to be there but career wise, had to. It was sort of like having to go before the House on Un-American Activities in that if you don't come thru, YOU'RE OUT! Jerry wielded a lot of power in the entertainment world sort of like Ed Sullivan. IF you got on the wrong side of him, it would not be good for your career. Dean was protected by the "Rat Pack" and Sinatra. Still, Jerry did make a lot of great entertainment. It's too bad that he didn't do any drama in his younger days as I think he would have been very good at it. The question is, would his fans have agreed. Jerry had one character and that's all he every played except for 2 much later films. Micky Rooney did a movie (The Comedian 1957) where he played a comic but you only saw his REAL sadistic personality in the film showing him to be a monster even to his relatives. But, when in front of his audience, he always stayed in the same ole stale character.
