    I rode the Gornergrat Bahn in 1991 on a visit to Zermatt. Thank you for sharing and providing a nice memory. I was there in summer and less snow. I was backpacking around Switzerland and wanted to honor my Friend Kevin who Tragically lost his life on a North wall Matterhorn Assent in '88. I spent several days in Zermatt. Beautiful to say the least. Breathtaking squared.

    We spent 10 days in and near Zermatt as part of a European trip some years ago. It was early autumn, and raining lightly when we alighted from the Glacier Express to be met by a horse-drawn carriage to take us to a very, very comfortable hotel on the town square. Then the rest of the time, we stayed in a cottage a few minutes walk from one of the Bahn's stations - Riffelberg from memory, certainly well towards the top. We certainly needed a fire each night to keep warm. We'd travel down to the town each day for various expeditions, sometimes staying there for an early dinner (the last train back was around 19.30 or so), sometimes buying some food to cook ourselves. Very different to our suburban life here and a great experience.

      Likewise for my first visit in 1994. Weather is certainly the one factor none of us can ever plan for. Evening before was cloudy and the morning of this ride I awoke to clear Blue skies. The view of the Matterhorn from the top was everything one could ever wish for. Thanks for viewing.

    Beside the cogwheel, an interesting point for electrical engineers is that this line is one of two three-phase powered lines in Switzerland (the other one being the Jungfraujoch). Look at the double overhead wire system, and the complexity of contactless crossings above the switches

    Wow. From Wiki:
    "The line is 9,339 m (30,640 ft) in length, including 3,790 m (12,434 ft) of double track, and traverses an altitude difference of 1,469 m (4,820 ft). It is built to metre gauge (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) and uses the Abt rack system throughout. It is one of four lines in the world using three-phase electric power, requiring two overhead conductors, with the track forming the third conductor."
    Fascinating.

    I've been to Zermatt twice and both times it was foggy up top so it wasn't worth taking the Gornergrat Bahn. But one time I had already purchased a ticket. I had to get it refunded in Brig and had a nice extended conversation in the railway headquarters with a member of staff comparing the local railroads with those in the United States.

    • @TheBandit7613
      @TheBandit7613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't really do rail here. We fly or drive. The USA is FAR to big for rail. Who wants to sit on a train for 3 or 4 days? Rail makes sense when your country is @135 miles by 220 miles! (Switzerland) However, the USA is the freight rail leader of the world. Are you going to take Amtrak for 3 days or fly United for 3 hours?

    • @danielcarroll3358
      @danielcarroll3358 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBandit7613 As the British say, "horses for courses". If you are going from Manhattan to Philadelphia you take the train, unless you are a tourist unfamiliar with the situation. If you are going from Manhattan to Las Vegas you fly. If you are going from Las Vegas to Henderson you drive. 100 to 500 miles is the ideal distance for high speed rail and developed countries take advantage of the technology. We in the US subsidize our highways annually at a rate fifty times higher than we subsidize Amtrak. But all you hear about is the Amtrak subsidy.
      Oh well, that's politics.

    • @TheBandit7613
      @TheBandit7613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielcarroll3358 There is politics involved. Probably more than you think. I'm a public worker, I've built roads in Colorado and Nevada, some from scratch. There are places where high speed rail is probably needed. From Las Vegas to Los Angeles and then to San Francisco. But there's 3 problems. Problem 1: The state uses transportation funds as an all purpose slush fund. Yes, they divert hundreds of millions to non transportation projects. 2. It's expensive to have hundreds of empty buses driving around Vegas just in case people decide to use public transportation. But they won't because Vegas is not a high density area. So people drive. And 3. The cost. It's pretty high. However, A high speed rail is supposedly supposed to be open in 2024 from Vegas to Victorville (stage one) We'll see!
