  • Melting Silver Plated Scrap (Metal Alloy Separation)
Continuing our process of refining silver plated scrap, we get to the results in this video and begin to see where all of our metal is. The copper is plating out nicely at the cathode. XFR results show that our copper is being removed from the anode bottle while our #silver concentrations are increasing.
The setup of the #copper cell aquarium has given us access to see inside of the anode bottle vs an opaque anode basket. Searching for impurities, we capture the slimes and solution, then test them with chemicals and the XRF. The process demonstrates that with a proper set up, it's easier and more efficient to clean the anode bottle vs some of my other experiments where a simple anode basket was used.
Along with test results, I show some great chemical reactions including the production of Chevreul's salt. It's one of my favorite reactions and there couldn't be a better time to display one of God's mysteries than Christmas.

I mispoke in the video. The cable ties are more expensive than I mentioned. www.grainger.com/search/elect...

Did you have a piece of pewter in your melt? Pewter is 95% tin, 5% antimony.

I'd say that's a pretty good guess! Thanks for the suggestion!

Hello man, interesting video. Slimes are very "tin-y"... :-) may be some pewter was in the mix...also quite a lot of lead... 31 Volts ??? so much? 1,7 Amp, that is like 50 Watts... the tank should be quite warm... Your experiment explains my early mistakes with AP waste treatment... I tried "neutralize" acidic solution of whatever metals, ended up with nasty mess of precipitates.... God bless and Merry Christmas...

Merry Christmas! I'm sure I had brass and now I'm pretty sure pewter with that high of concentration of tin. I'll have fun pulling them out one by one! I pray... Ya, it doubles as a sink heater for sure. Runs about 80 degrees. God Bless you and your family this Christmas!

Very interested, I have lots of plated silver and hate stripping it with salt, how do I find detailed instructions of how to do this, I have ran my silver cell many times for sterling scrap

I have silver alloy containing copper, zinc, lead, cadmium
Alloy having 50% silver content I want to recover all silver without any loss of silver, suppose 1kg alloy with 50% silver content that means 55gm pure silver present in my alloy I want back all 500gm silver more than 98% purity...

If you want only pure silver back dissolving in nitric acid and precipitate silver with hcl. Then convert silver oxide with lye and sugar and you are there. This is the most complete process for quantity and purity of silver. I have a video on this topic on my channel. “Lye and Sugar”
