27:44 Explaining Reactions Using Tests and Results
This video shows all of the steps I use while refining silver cell slimes, or as I like to refer to them, ET’s Extras. There are many approaches to PGM refining all depending on what's in your solution. The left-over material from silver refining may include, gold, platinum, palladium, iridium, and maybe even some rhodium. It all depends on what you run through the silver cell to begin with. My approach includes using reagents such as sodium borohydride, dimethylglyoxime, and ammonia chloride. With proper testing using stannous chloride, and a few other methods, you will be well on your way to learning all about Platinum Group Metals and how to capture your free metal.
I purchased all of the material in this video at silver prices but I received free gold and palladium when I refined the silver slimes. Much of our jewelry, mostly older pieces, will have some platinum group metals combined into them as an alloy to harden the metal and to make the silver tarnish slower.
PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN TRYING ANY OF THESE EXPERIMENTS!
Experiment at your own risk! Nitric acid and hydrochloric acid are very dangerous and corrosive. All chemistry experiments should be held outdoors or in a fume hood and be preformed with competency.

I’m curious as to why you didn’t do any form of cooling on your distillation apparatus? Also you want to cover everything with aluminum foil or similar to keep the light off the reaction as it breaks down the nitric into a dioxide thus lower yields. The fact you’re seeing fumes in your collection flask means you’re losing yield and it’s not all being converted to an acid.

Even though it has a lower boiling point nitric acid has a weird property where a dilute solution of nitric acid and water will distill over mostly water first. A much easier way is to evaporate the copper nitrate down to crystals before adding your sulfuric acid. This way you get much stronger nitric with way less effort

I can't imagine this is worth doing at any scale. If you're going to collect NO2 gas anyway, why not setup an apparatus for doing it when you're actually refining? You could use a sodium sulfate scrubber instead of just letting it all vent through the fume hood. Or, even better, lose the sodium sulfate and use an ozone bubbler.

Way to know whether you have added enough sulfuric acid to the copper nitrate solution: take a drop of solution, put in small beaker & heat to desiccation. If copper sulfate only, will be white powder. If copper nitrate is left, you will see dark powder (copper oxide from decomposed copper nitrate, you need to add more sulfuric acid).

I've used platinum mesh anodes (both real and fake, unfortunately), tried converting nickel sulfate to nickel chloride, precipitating out with zinc - and none of them seem to be effective. The only reason I don't precipitate with aluminum is because I haven't found a use for aluminum sulfate. How do you get the nickel out of solution AND keep your sulfuric acid?

Awesome videos, and also a unique silver cell design! I like it! Quick recommendation though, and over time you’ll start to notice why. PGMs are obviously crazy picky, quirky, and just all around strange when dealing with in solution. What I highly recommend is that you take your slimes and make sure to rinse everything until you cannot detect ANY silver nitrate traces or base metals like copper etc. Rinse with hot distilled water stirring well, and allow to settle before decanting. Repeat until you can take a sample of the solution (couple drops) and add hcl to it to check for silver nitrate. Rinse until you get no reaction. 2nd part of this would be to use a Polypropylene fine mesh screen and classify down the slimes as to make sure you don’t have much of any silver metals left behind. You can process these separately in another reaction as like you mentioned, pgms act funny when combined with other metals, especially the sponge we call silver that loves to bring everything with it haha. Keep up the great work, I look forward to each video you put out ! ❤

This should allow one to reclaim the maximum amount of nitric acid. And, ending with copper sulphate is desirable as it can easily be converted back into pure copper and sulphuric acid using electrolysis. Please let me know if I am overlooking anything.
