    "the lows on the 5150 are low and sounds generic"
    Thats because tons of people dont realize it can be used in different ways. Everyone always gravitates and uses the red channel. Try this people:
    Rythem channel, crunch button enabled, bright button optional, gain at 6-7, eq to taste, boost it.

    • @sethgross3904
      @sethgross3904 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup! The rhythm channel is where it’s all! Thicker and less compressed. The 5150 doesn’t have to sound brittle and fuzzy.

    • @carterfest
      @carterfest 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pro tip: Adjustable bias mod, heat those bad boys up to at least 30mA. They are set extremely cold from the factory. Then that Rhythm channel will come to life!

    I agree the 5150 sounds thin and trebly, but that’s what makes it sit so well in a mix. You don’t need too much bottom when the bass and kick drum are occupying those frequencies.

      I've had a 6505+ and a Triple Rectifier. The Peaveys have much tighter bass especially with drop tunings, but it's mostly beneficial when playing fast riffs. I liked it when playing in a band because it kept things super tight (especially with a noise gate). Playing by myself I prefer something warmer, but that doesn't matter because no one hears me play at home

    GUYS! as a fellow rectifier lover myself, the best 5150 i have played is the new gold one with EL34's, it has so much more balls than any of the other 5150/6505's that have 6L6's and sounds much more well-rounded and less "fizzy." i think if theres ever going to be a 5150 that Kohle would like, it would be this one - i strongly suggest you guys demo one if youre able to!

    awesome video! I learned a lot. I have always liked the 5150, but primarily for its pre-amp. for the poweramp, I have always preffered Marshall and EL34. For many years I have used a Digital modeller emulating the 5150 preamp, and run it through an old Marshall 9000 series rack poweramp. (the old with the black front. I later learned that some guitarplayers swear by these, because of the Power transformers used in these. but these also made it very very heavy, maybe that's why they were replaced in the later versions with the gold front.) To me, this combination yielded the best of both worlds. I have been tempted to try out KT 77 powertubes, but that will have to wait.

    That’s cool you have an FJA modded amp. A lot of people don’t know about FJA. He modded a block letter 5150 for me years ago. Bias mod and clarity mod. It was amazing. Took away that harshness in the highs. Sounded incredibly balanced. After it was modded, I ran the amp flat and it killed! I played in He Is Legend years ago.

    I think the most important step in achieving a great tone is knowing what you want. Unless you're in multiple cover bands, you don't need a rig to cover every genre. Find your favorite tones that fit YOUR style of playing then do the research to find the gear behind those tones. It's that simple.

    When I toured with Unearth in like 99 2000, (My Band Since the Fall is thanked on the first album) I was gigging with a Digitech Legend II, Tubeworks SS Power Amp, and Tweed Tubeworks 4x12. Which back then was nice. But they had some different gear for sure. Trevor had short hair and pink glasses ;)

    Interesting opinion about the 5150! Sail Into The Black by Machine head was one of my biggest inspirations for my own tone. That part in the break down before the solo is one of my favorite guitars sounds ever. I think the way it's written is a big part of that. Hey Kristin. Would you combine a Diezel with a Dual Rect in one track? Each guitar assigned one amp.
    Thanks again for all the great content

    I have a myriad of favorite setups but some tones that I've gotten recently that sound sick to me:
    - JP II-C+/6505 blend and quad tracked with an SLO-100 on a light crunch creeps into that Black Album 'weight'
    - VH-4/JVM 410 blend sounds very THICC and ch0nky
    - Dual Rectifier/VHT Pitbull blend sounds very big with a slight but very pleasant scooped sound
    Edit: SLO/Sunn Model T blend is doom heaven.

    Kohle is the man!!!!! Try my set up a triple recto with el34s on the vintage setting with the mids cranked then a marshall vintage modern set clean with lots of highs and lows it sounds so sick!!!!! Great for grunge sludge and even doom it sounds really trippy

      Thanks man! I’m also using EL34s in my Recto lately. You’ll find a video about it on my channel.

    Please would you guys make a distinction between which DSL you are talking about? The JCM2000 DSL is a very different amp than the modern DSL. And any love for the 2000 TSL?

    so i like the 5150, but i do agree with what kohle is saying about them and i really like a blend between an evh 5150 and a rectifier

    Kohle's a funny guy. He's lightyears away from what I'll ever use but he's very entertaining to listen to.

    Such a pity that these guys are not my colleagues or neighbors. I would have really enjoyed having these fellas as friends 🤘🏻

    Question: As a non-Marshall guy, I always wondered why the JCM900 (from what I have seen/heard/perceive) doesn't seem to be held in the same high regard or doesn't get the praise of JCM800, Siler Jubilees and DSLs.
    Did they change the design/sound that just never appealed as much as the others?

    What are your thoughts on Laney? I don't think I've ever heard you talk about them. I had an old AOR ProTube 50 and it was awesome. It's my only piece of gear I regret selling.

    "Let's show you what is possible with $10,000 worth of gear, but since you don't have $10,000 worth of gear, just buy this course and it will solve all your problems." is all I got from this video.
