We went to the premier of One Life at Tiff and after the film, they came to the front to talk and said "everyone who is alive today due to the this man, stand up". Hundreds of people stood up in the theatre. Hundreds of kids and grandkids of the many people he saved.
@@Based_Gigachad_001why? it’s not unreasonable to believe that a bunch of descendants of the ones saved would be invited to the premiere of a movie directly related to their lives
I met Noah Centineo when he came to a student bar next to my school when he was filming "The Recruit." There were some other cast members and his manager there, and he ended up coming back to my and my roommate's apartment where he stayed until 2:30am, letting my roommate pierce his ear and try to sleep in her bed until we ordered him an Uber back to his hotel. Strange night and strange man
The Holdovers is not what so many people think it is. It's really sincere and honest and there's an undercurrent of grief and melancholy which makes the humor hit even harder. Da'Vine Joy Randolph is absolutely my top choice for supporting actress right now. Giamatti is excellent too and he better get his first Oscar nom!
Closest I got to TIFF this year was the IMAX Live national showing of Stop Making Sense and the Q&A with the Talking Heads and Spike Lee. Had to leave right when the movie ended though because I had to go to bed early. So I didn't see the grand reunion of Talking Heads. As an amateur filmmaker one of my dreams is to actually see TIFF up close.
The Holdovers continues to have me in a chokehold(over), couldn’t believe how much of a good time I had watching it and connecting so deeply with all the characters. Hit Man was an absolute blast as well, new bi panic film just dropped fr
Definitely always excited for fresh A24 films like Dream Scenario, but I'm honestly glad you emphasized The Holdovers. To be honest, I wasn't planning to see it, but now that you mention it, and finding out that the filming location of FairHaven High being not too far from me, I can't help but check it out.
I’m so glad you also liked Dream Scenario. I heard a lot of people who didn’t gel with it but I had a complete blast. It was a lot more absurd than I was expecting, especially since the director’s previous film Sick of Myself was pretty grounded. As for Mother Couch, I still don’t even understand the underlying metaphor lol. I enjoyed it though, just don’t know what it was going for. Perfect Days, TBATH, and Anatomy of a Fall were the standouts of the festival for me. Naga was also excellent and Dicks: The Musical was funnier than I expected (especially considering that god awful trailer).
Karsten, I'm new to your channel, but I really love it, and I really enjoyed this video. I'm glad you got to have the experience of meeting people you really admire, and to not be let down. That's an awesome feeling, and it's RARE as hell. Your legitimate joy in recounting it shone through, and it was really nice to see. Thanks!
I saw you in line before Dream Scenario! It was really nice to meet you and glad you enjoyed the film, it was one of my favourites from the festival too :-)
I’m glad The Holdovers was so good. Sideways is a really wonderful film that showcases Paul Giamatti’s dramatic talents and it’s nice to see him tap into that again.
Hitman will be getting a theatrical release. Granted it will probably be a truncated run, but still not all of their movies get a theatrical release, so at least it's something.
I think it’s so it meets the minimum qualification for The Oscars. There’s still a minimum amount time a movie has to play in movie theaters in New York and LA to qualify.
Lmaoo im sort of sad by these reviews of finestkind. When I first heard about it I figured Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Foster, Jenna Ortega, from the writer of LA Confidential, what could go wrong?? Sounds like it’s an absolute trainwreck 😂
Same, everything from the plot, cast, and writer made it seem like it had a lot of potential, sucks to see it didn't pan out well. It helps that I instantly lowered my expectations once I found out it was a Paramount+ original, that was never gonna be a good sign.
Y’know, I was actually meant to go to a film festival myself as I managed to acquire free tickets to see Fremont But then I got sick and so I couldn’t go 😔
13:14 I came here right after Adam's YMS Toronto 2023 video and I can see that he didnt enjoy that movie that much so he stated thats its just plain weak. I was going to see your thoughts about it because its a Korrine's joint film. And darn you enjoy it so Im on to this movie.
Hello! subscriber from Brazil, don't know if you're going to reed this, but when you talked about prision movie and it's characters, reminded me of a great brazilian movie called "Carandiru", think you should watch this!
Due to work, I only had time for TIFF on the 16th, so I only caught 3 movies (and one if them was a throwback from the 80s). Watched Wicked Little Letters, which was cute and funny but in the end felt like the humour was very 'one trick pony'. I still enjoyed it though, apparently the whole theater did (it's very normie friendly). The ending was very satisfying. The other one I watched was The New Boy because our mother Cate Blanchett in the main role and music by Nick Cave?? They made this movie for me!!!. While I think the second half is weaker, I really liked it. Dont trust the reviews if you like contemplative, gorgeous movies with an important message. Movies, that you think about after you saw them. The third one was Pee-Wee's Big Adventure aka Tim Burton's debut and the humour hit so right:,)
Not heard of We Grown Now but I may check it out at some point. It seems like you are not highly recommending Finest Kind so I probably won’t be rushing to see this any time soon. The Boy and the Heron is a movie I’m yet to see, as I’m yet to get myself into the Anime movie scene. I’ll probably check it out at some point. One Life is not a movie I am interested in myself, so I probably will be giving this one a miss too. Lucky you got to meet Noah Centineo and I’m glad you had a good experience with him. Dream Scenario is a movie I want to see. I’ve heard that movie is meant to be a Dark Comedy version of A Nightmare on Elm Street and I’ll be watching this when it’s out at the cinema, as I’m getting a bit more into Nick Cage’s comeback to the big screen space and Hollywood. Mother, Couch, I don’t know much about this movie so will need to watch a trailer and read a plot summary to see whether or not I’ll watch that one or not. Sing Sing is not a movie I’m interested in watching myself at the cinema but may watch it on streaming at some point. Knox Goes Away sounds like it could be a decent popcorn movie, so I may check this out at the cinema, otherwise it’ll be on streaming. I’m not interested in seeing Next Goal Wins as I’m not interested in Football and I may check out The Pigeon Tunnel but shall have to wait and see. The Holdovers is a movie I may watch but I’m not rushing to see this one. I haven’t seen Hell of a Summer and not heard much about it. I’m just starting to get myself into slasher horror movies, so it might be a while before I watch this one. I may Hit Man when it lands on Netflix. Seems like it could be a decent watch, as I like watch movies about Hit Men. Nyad is not a movie I’m that interested in seeing, so I think I’ll probably just give it a miss. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insight into the movies you watched at TIFF and hoping I’ll be able to go at some point to a Film Festival.
I was wondering if you watched or wanted to watch Atom Egoyan's Seven Veils with Amanda Seyfried? Or if you watched any Egoyan's films and what you think about them.
I hope to get to one of the big festivals at some point, but right now HIFF (Heartland International Film Festival) is the one that fits into my life. At HIFF I plan on seeing (roughly in order of excitement) Monster, Anatomy of a Fall, All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, Foe, Simon, and Stopmotion. I would go to see The Holdovers, but I have work that night, it doesn’t look that exciting to me, and it is confirmed to get a wide release so I don’t feel the urgency for it.
Am I missing something about Alexander Payne? He was accused of statutory rape. Not trying to say Karsten is a bad person. I’m just trying to understand why everyone’s suddenly okay with Payne
These are pretty good reviews, but one thing I disagree with is Aggro Dr1ft. I understand the carefree perspective, but just don't brush over the fact that it's a misogynistic male power fantasy. Filmmaking-wise, that's a conversation, but the content itself is just borderline offensive, so just a heads up to anybody potentially looking to track this one down.

The Holdovers is pretty hype for me. I think it has a good shot of winning the original screenplay oscar (yes over Barbie and Past Lives).
The Holdovers was awesome. Probably my favourite of the year so far.
Also it was cool meeting you Karsten! - guy in the Barbie sweater
can’t wait to have a double feature with Beau is Afraid and Dream Scenario
Sometimes I forget just how many movies play at TIFF. I saw 15 movies and between the two of us, we only have Hit Man in common!
So, to recap, the films to look forward to most are: Dream Scenario, The Holdovers, Hit Man, Aggro Drift and Woman of the Hour.
Thanks Karsten!
