Some were expert potioneers, some were lightning fast duelists, and some… even… were experts on dark magic.
Who were they? And what did they contribute to the Hogwarts legacy?
Today, we're going to be DIVING in and uncovering the 28 headmasters / headmistresses that have graced Hogwarts over its lengthy history.

Umbridge was never truly the Headmistress of Hogwarts because the Headmaster's office refused to let her in. It was as if Hogwarts itself did not recognize her as the legitimate Headmistress. The office did however let Snape in, effectively legitimizing him as a true Headmaster, despite having been appointed by Voldemort. That's why his portrait hangs in the Headmaster's office but Umbridge does not have one.
Severus Snape even continued talking to Dumbledore's portrait even in Voldemort's reign. He was a double agent at the cost of his life choices and freedom. Always caught between Dumbledore and Voldemort.
Snape was one of the best characters in the books and films and the way he died was sad. He should of been recognised as the hero he was.
@@Psion_Phoenix Snape did get the recognition he deserved. Harry made sure everyone knew what Snape was really doing and how brave he was. He insisted Snape's portrait be added alongside the other former headmasters of Hogwarts.

@@Psion_Phoenix Snape wasn't a hero. He was a child abusing villain who only turned coat because he was capable of love. That capability does not make him a hero, nor does it absolve him of the abuse of the likes of Neville and so on. This is a perfect example of what makes JKR a shitty author and person, this is her idea of a hero.
Phineas Black cracked me up in the books, even though I guess it was only technically his portrait talking.
Right? I know he was the most hated Headmaster, but I couldn't help but feel bad for him with how 'he' reacted in such a disbelieving way. He might've been one of the few Blacks who appreciated Sirius, as much as he griped about his great grandson.

@@TsukabuNosoratori2 You could also kind of tell by the way he bantered with Dumbledore that despite how much they didn't see eye to eye they kind of liked each other. And when Hermione stuck his Grimmauld place picture back in her bag in Deathly Hallows because it seemed like he was trying to get information to take back to his portrait in Hogwarts for Snape when you remember he knew the whole story behind Dumbledore and Snape he actually was trying to help them.

Do you think Harry would become Headmaster eventually?
My head canon is that he works as an Auror until Lily leaves school. With all his kids out of the house, Harry decides to retire as an Auror and teaches Defense at Hogwarts and eventually becomes Headmaster. I just kinda like the idea that Hogwarts will never stop being his home.
I think headmasters were usually (or always?) unmarried. Choosing instead to devote their lives to education instead of family. Much like monks and nuns in a monastery or early Catholic universities on which Hogwarts is based.

@@helloimjohn oh that’s right. I guess it’s difficult, but some have made it work. You’d have to spend most of the time on the secluded campus dealing with endless school-related affairs, so perhaps the spouse would have to do most of the house rearing and the family would go long stretches without seeing their parent.. which is why it seems uncommon.
Niamh FitzGerald was also a headmaster, as you will soon learn during the main story of Hogwarts Legacy.

It sounds like a couple of words and I cannot be sure for its meaning if I don’t see it written in Hellenic or the term’s origin.
Any name or word in English that “ph” is pronounced as “f” is Hellenic🇬🇷
Phyllida sounds like the word φύλο/fílo meaning leaf or some sort of leafy foliage.

It’s a town near the birth place of Alexander the Great.
In Hellenic it’s Έδεσσα/édessa and it’s stressed at the first syllable.
The original town was in Makedonia🇬🇷 but after Alexander speared Hellenism to the whole world many cities founded and got Hellenic names out of Hellas!!!
You can find Hellenic names like Edessa in Syria and Ukraine today. Sparta in turkey and Mesopotamia… etc
Edessa means something like the place of the many waters. It’s a city surrounded by water fountains with fresh water and waterfalls!

Now, Minerva isn’t a Hellenic name BUT it is a name of the Hellene Goddess taken by the Romans and latinised!
When Romans conquered Hellas they adopted many aspects of our civilisation and culture, one of them was our religion!
Romans took the Gods of the Hellenic pantheon and changed them into Latin.
Zeus became Jupiter
Hera became Juno
Aphrodite became Venus
Ares became Mars
Poseidon became Neptune
Hestia became Vesta
Hermes became Mercury
….(many more)…
And Athena became Minerva!
Yes, the name Minerva is the Latin translation of the Hellene Goddess Athena!
Who not only lead the school to war but also brought the statues to life. “I’ve always wanted to use that spell!!”
During the end game of HL, Phineas actually seems genuinely upset, genuinely as if he's trying his best. I don't think he's evil by any means, merely a bumbling snob.
He literally made Quiditch unavailable to play, because a child got hurt. If memory serves. So he seems like a good natured Umbridge. Unlike the one actual Umbridge we got in the movies who just outlawed things, and punished kids for some reason.
Probably never had kids, and sired hatred from it. Also, she's basically a crazy cat lady.
18:50 - Snape as headmaster was actually an excellent choice, and Dumbledore knew it. He knew he was dying and he knew Snape as headmaster would try to protect the students from the vicious evil of Voldemort. It was revealed that Snape ensured that when students were given terrible punishments by the Carrows, he would ensure they wouldn't be hurt. He would for example send them to help Hagrid. With Snape as headmaster, the students were far better protected than if he wasn't there. Imagine the horrors if the Carrows or Umbridge was headmaster in that awful year?

@@joshelias8472 Please remember how many students were taught at Hogwarts each year. Around 1,000 students are there every year. Snape couldn't protect them all. He tried his best. There was only so much he could do without raising suspicion from Voldemort or the Carrows. In interviews JK Rowling was asked about Snape as headmaster, and she said that Snape tried his best to protect the students. This is why Dumbledore wanted him as headmaster.

**My favorite Headmaster per your question is always going to be Serverus Snape. However Albus Dumbledore definitely comes in a Top number one also, being in control of all three Deathly Hallows, incredibly great and gifted at magic. Not to mention many other vast greatness he had.**

I like that he called Dumbledore taking down everyone in the room with ease a scuffle.
I liked Phineas Black. He wasnt particularly interested in teaching and was not even fond of children. But he knew that Headmaster position is very powerful in wizarding world. Basically you get to decide Britain's magical population's future with it. We dont get in-depth detail of his career, but I am sure he wasnt shy to hide his biased opinions in front of anybody. He was a smart man and worked enough on the job, to not get fired but not too much because he lacked the drive.

What additional effects do spells have that are not seen in the movies? For instance, what else can the patronus charm do besides ward off dementors?
The patrons can send messages which we do see in the movies when Kingsley shackle bolt send a warning to bill and fleurs wedding

It’s is said that the late 19th century American wizard “Rocky Rockit” was fond of using magically explosive vessels & air bubble spells to routinely travel to space & back.
Some say he reached as far as the moons of Jupiter in his travels & encountered Aliens with magical qualities on Europa, though this may be mere speculation.

I however have to correct you "Ora et labora" is the rule for the Benedictine order and means "Pray and work" it continues "et lege. Deus adest sine mora", translated "and read. God will arrive without waiting". It has nothing to do with working before studying, but is a rule of how live live a pius life.

Great analysis! Just to say, I think Amrose Swott was a Hufflepuff reagarding his motto of hard work. His name was also carved on a wood panel in the Divinations classroom, so he might have been a Divinations professor. So I just googled who replaced McGonagall as transfiguration professor but all it said was that:
'Professor Marazion succeeded Minerva McGonagall in the post of Head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This individual became Headmaster or Headmistress some time between 2008 and 2017 after Minerva McGonagall went into retirement as she was "getting on a bit".' I don't know if it's true but I wonder what this Headmaster/Headmistress was like?
I also wonder who replaced Professor McGonagall in Transfiguration, I did Google it but I can't find anything on it, it just said the quote that I said above. I'm genuinely curious about who was Transfiguration Professor after McGonagall. Also if Harry Potter and the Cursed Child said anything about it I don't want to hear it, I do not consider it's Canon, there are so many plot-holes and if Delphi was born before the Battle of Hogwarts, then Bellatrix would have been heavily pregnant in the Battle at Malfoy Manor. She would not have been able to move as agile as she was in the books and movies. And there also would have been a huge baby bump when they battled, the corset that she was wearing would not have been able to hide that and if it did, it would be endangering the baby and there would not be a lot of chance that it survived.
Cursed Child is definitely not canon. We don`t talk about it.

Another thing I always thought is each Head Master/Mistress actually own the House Elves and their ownership transfers to each new Head If they leave or die. That way the elves always have a Master/Mistress

The dates for most of these are laughably wrong. The clothing in the portraits is the key to dates. People dressing in ruffs predate people in periwigs by 200 years.

I think sending Hagrid is the best choice. I would imagine seeing a half giant would quickly persuade muggles of magic
They would be more interested in the flying motorcycle than Hagrid himself I think
Hagrid is perfect to let people know that magic is real and you're about to send your child to a wizard boarding school. a giant with a pink umbrella showing up and telling you your kid is a wizard is going to be a bit easier to believe than if some old dude in funny clothes shows up. Hagrid would be less likely to have to show a muggle magic to prove his claim as just looking at him makes it clear.
Hagrid maybe a half-giant and he may lack a level of proficiency in magic, but he is the kinda guy who will pick you up when you fall on the roadside even if your family moves ahead. He is caring. Can be scary at times. But generally very good mannered.

I’m guessing he would at least be a little grumpy. Maybe even quite grumpy.
My theory is that Dumbledore would have taken Sirius in on the secret. Why? Because Dumbledore knew Sirius would do anything to protect Harry. Sirius would have been Dumbledore`s insurance policy for Harry. So Dumbledore would have probably called in a meeting with Sirius and Snape, to tell them his main plan for Harry. So that after his death Snape and Sirius do not mess things up. Harry would then have gone off on the horcrux hunt with Ron, Hermione and Sirius. Sirius would have been invaluable with his magical knowledge and experience.
He would have had a strong reaction for sure, but he wasn't generally too close with Dumbledore. And I imagine he held a bit of resentment given that Dumbledore knew he was innocent yet left him in azkaban

Dumbledore was devastated when Sirius was killed by Bellatrix, believing that it was mostly his fault, and he later expressed to Harry his belief that Sirius was a brave, clever, and energetic man, who would never be content with sitting at home in hiding while his loved ones were in danger. Sirius's death was also a factor that led to Dumbledore finally revealing to Harry things that had been kept secret from him, mainly about the true power of his mother's sacrificial protection and the prophecy about him and Voldemort.
I would name the first headmaster “Alfric Thorpe”, husband of Matilda Gryffindor (daughter of Godric Gryffindor).
And I would assume that Alfric was installed as the new head of Gryffindor upon his father-in-law’s resignation, and later became promoted to “Headmaster” as a token of respect for all his wisdom and guidance in regards to him being the most respected among the four Hogwarts head teachers of his time.

For one headmaster, you've shown the picture from hogwarts legacy, which is actually showing the old librarian.
As Godric Griffindor was the one that lived and stayed at hogwarts the longest of the founders, he might be considered the actual first single headmaster.

Is it known who the headmaster will be for the video game that's coming out in 2023? Seems like anyone between #11 and maybe #20 could be a candidate.
So in Hogwarts legacy the time period is that of the 23rd head master. That helps put it into perspective time wise.
With the release of Hogwarts Legacy, we now know that Phineas Nigellas was headmaster in 1891, but where would Niamh Fitzgerald fit in? From what we see in the game, it must have been in the renaissance era
