I work with physically handicapped children and adults. Many of these kids are attached to tubes and cannot eat or use the restrooms without some form of help. Its a very sad life and many of these kids live short lives. At my job we have music Friday and play songs to them on guitar. This is when I see these kids smile and bop their heads along. Just being a big SP fan I fell upon this and seeing those disabled kids behind them shaking their feet to Tonight Tonight is what makes this band so beautiful. Music is the best medicine is the world and they understand that. This video is an example of that. A day they will never forget.
Set the Ray to Jerry gets missed in the sea of awesomeness from that era. Such a good song, and it doesn't even make it onto anyone's compilation of best SP music cause there is just so much other good stuff.
@@dougherbert7899 Billy has said it's one of his favorite SP songs that he wishes they fleshed it out more but I think any addition would have been superfluous. It's austere but every instrument is filling the space perfectly and Jimmy adds JUST enough flourish as can only be expected from him.
This is some of Billy's best singing live ! Love when they went acoustic live. Some acoustic live versions off Siamese where incredible. Hummer rocket and mayonnaise ... mind blowing

I recommend you to listen "One Day" by Red Can. I just came across with them and I didn't expect that. I think they are pretty new..but they sound like all these great bands
Billy was an amazing songwriter and guitarist but james added so much to the band. He might not have been the most technically gifted player but he knew what notes to play to compliment the melody
He added a lot of beauty with the solos, he added musical ideas here and there and a soft song or two to counter Billy's rage. It was the Smashing Pumpkin's formula and without it the magic does not happen.
James Iha is actually a pretty funny dude! I saw them in Little Rock Arkansas in Sept. '96 and he answered his phone on stage and Iha told the crowd it was Bill Clinton and that he says rock on! More was said but that was over 20 years ago. If anyone has that show on video or even just audio please please let me know! Thank you for your support
James Iha is one of my favorite guitarists of all time, I saw him with Perfect Circle in Sacramento, CA at an Aftershock music festival; I never had an opportunity to see The 1st Smashing Pumpkins in concert so seeing James Iha was fantastic . I’m a guitarist also & Im 66 😎
You know one of my college buddies turned me on to Smashing Pumpkins and he said listen to that which was Gish and I was blown away because to me they didn’t sound like anyone else. Billy’s vocals were very unique, his and James guitar 🎸 playing very original and inspirational, Darcy with her own ice Queen vibe, and Jimmy’s very unique approach to playing aggressively and then quietly and then amazing dexterity with ghost notes on the snare and toms with jazz flavoring! So to sum up they didn’t sound like any group at their time not grunge, soft rock, not alternative, not Progressive rock just their own unique sound which was unheard before ala Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix where right of the Shute as a listener you were going what’s this? I don’t know but I like this! Saw the Gish tour and then Siamese Dream tour as part of LOLLAPOLOOZA! Love the guys! I do miss Darcy though! Just sayin 💔
I was at both shows and they were incredible. Never missed a SP show here in the Bay Area since before 1993. The night before this show they played Porcelina with John Popper on the harmonica. Amazing set list for a acoustic show.
Really a service to music that this was documented. I liked how they brought Manson out and the passion in the whole set really but especially that song x.y.u Awesome video, thanks for sharing. Headed to watch a sonic youth concert next, gonna look for one from the year I was born, ‘99
Kind of a short playlist. I saw them a year before this show in Little Rock Arkansas and they kept playing and playing. They would thank the crowd and say goodnight buy no one would leave so they came back and rocked it again! They sounded perfect and the speaker and acoustics were also perfect! Best show ever! Thank you SP💘 for the great sounds and even better memories!💘
It's interesting to me that Corgan likes to remind people that he often had to play D'arcy and James' parts in the studio when recording albums. But the truth is that throughout their entire catalog, their live versions of songs (going back to Gish) are by far my favorite versions. For every song, there is a live counterpart from a session or concert that is better than the studio version. And as far as I can tell (during the era where they were still involved) they played their own instruments on stage. So I never really understood why Corgan would make such a point of suggesting that they couldn't play very well because clearly they always could...well enough to make some damn fine live music and well enough to far surpass the sound of the current lineup of SP. Music is about chemistry, not perfection. Whatever flaws they all had (even Corgan's inconsistent vocals) is what gave them their sound and it definitely wasn't perfect but it was pretty amazing when the chemistry was in full effect.
You pointed out a reality I noticed as well! I saw James Iha play live with SP.. His hands were flying super fast during the fast songs so all that nonsense that he or Darcy couldn’t play is exactly that! Nonsense! As far I I’ve read, Butch Vig said to Corgan that they’re playing wasn’t up to snuff, I guess. And that only he and Chamberlain could play well enough to record. Now I don’t want to blame Butch Vig for this fiasco completely. He’s a great producer. Corgan is a control freak apparently and took over everything except the drumming. Now I’m going to go back and see if James played on Gish at all or if the guitars 🎸 are all Corgan. I’ll find out soon enough. But knowing Corgan is a perfectionist, I’m not sure if James is on the record or not. Darcy sings on it but now I’m not certain about the bass playing on there either. It might be all Billy. I’m going to find out. 🔥🎸💥😎
They were good live, but i think its because they fell out over it before mcis, then the press made such a big deal out of it, pre pro tools days and all, bands were still pretty much expected to recorded live. You could aurgue albums like siamese dream and nevermind raised the bar for production generally.. then pro tools changed everything... mellon collie is mostly live though..
It was a mix of Billy's control, his desire to record and spend 18 hrs a day in the studio, and the big catalyst was their first two albums being prooduced by Butch Vig who shared his obsession and was relentless in the studio. Switching to Flood for Mellon Collie changed the vibe up quite a bit and had a lot more band input. Billy's deep-dine on Gish reveals a lot of the nuance: th-cam.com/video/E5gqY65DYts/w-d-xo.html
27:35 Oh you know, just MARILYN FREAKING MANSON casually coming on, no big deal. Btw I love how Manson planted a kiss on Billy's bald head and he did the rest of the show with a giant lipstick mark on his head XD

Xyu, one of the best songs ever, seriously its done beautifully here, while the loud versions are face ripping, and given to much interpretation when played live
And while i appreciate Billy's singing these days, i even find myself singing along to old songs like how he has sung the last 15 years, his singing from 1997 to 2000 was his best.
