      ***** Holy machinery! That could supply several miners at once, eh? I'd be happy with something that could sand-blast without difficulty, but we all have different standards on what's big or little depending on our experience.

      +Cody'sLab when you decide to blast again drill further than the explosive goes in so theres about a 2 inch gap from the explosive to the start of the hole that will give you a better result ive mined with my father for 4 years now and that how weve done it and it works pretty well

    Hi Cody, I worked underground for a couple of years. Those sticks might have been sheared off by a neighboring hole before they had a chance to detonate. We used precision detonators on holes that were close together. Also loaded the detonator first so that if a delayed hole got cut off it would still have a chance. For sequenced blasts electric detonators are all set off at the same time and then the delay begins internally, that way the wire or even part of the hole can be destroyed and it will still work. We were pretty diligent about washing out the stub holes and cracks on the face after a blast. Explosive compound can get forced into the cracks and go off when you hit it with the drill. Our drills used water for flushing the chips so we always had lots of water available. Keeps the dust down too.
    Dave

      @theCodyReeder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      all the detonators went off

    • @Eman4570
      @Eman4570 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      As far as I can tell from the explosives that didn't go off there are several reasons that could have caused the blast to not work properly. Either the tubes the explosives were in were smaller than the critical diameter required for the blast to propagate through the entire charge, i missed what explosive compound you were using to be able to check and see if it was in a blasting handbook i have. Another reason is that the charges may have been packed too tight. I don't think it was an issue of the drill holes being too close together. Another thing that I noticed is that it didn't look like you were utilizing stemming. Which is drilling the hole deeper than the length of the charge and then plugging the end of the hold to better transfer the energy of the blast to the surrounding rock mass to fracture it. If this is the case you are losing a lot of energy from the blast to the air resulting in air overpressure and you will get cupping of the drill holes like those shown in this video. Also just a heads up be watch yourself when working under that unsupported roof after blasting. I have had a bunch of guys i know and worked with in the coal mines have rocks fall out and hit them or the ribs of the entry roll out on them.

      @@Eman4570 Mining engineer with 15 years experience here. I would like to echo your sentiments here, you are spot on! Stemming the blastholes is EXTREMELY important -- without stemming all of the energy just goes out the top of the hole. And I too was cringing watching Cody work under unsupported, unscaled top. Cody -- get yourself a sturdy scaling bar and "scale down" the back (roof) of the adit before you resume work underneath. This will help keep you and others safe. Love your videos. Stay safe, and keep up the great work!

    you really should separate your rocks from rockdust with a sifter, and keep the rock dust in 5 gallon buckets. The next rainstorm you'll be flushing your silver away leaving it out in the open like that.

  • @otomik1
    @otomik1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'm really not sure about you moving material back in the collapsed mine. With a fault running down there, the rubble might be what's holding it in place. I reckon 200ft of an air hose is cheaper than getting a new Cody, eh? Also, the air compressor is sick. So much potential... Good luck restoring it. You might need it. Any production date or something?
    PS.: Im not sure, but wouldn't you want to either brace it up or knock down the semi-loose material in the dome at the end of the main mine? I shiver every time you point the camera up there. I've been in a mine when a part of it collapsed. Fortunatelly, I was on the right side. The material looked way more solid than this here, so... By the way, how thick is the rock layer above the mine? Ever considered making a vent shaft or would it compromise the tunnel's structure?

    • @theCodyReeder
      @theCodyReeder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      that could work.

    • @RealLuckless
      @RealLuckless 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Two important questions:
      Could you work with it safely and reliably?
      Would it have the energy and suitable speed to break up the rock well?
      Personally I would consider skipping the explosives, and go for feathers and wedges to block things out. Getting your initial break space/line is kind of a pain, but really it is just a row of holes to drill closely together so you can break open a long straight slot. After you have that you can start splitting out larger blocks. If you use a small bit on your pneumatic drill then you can make a lot of progress in a short time, and if you can handle the blocks in large enough chunks that stay together then you can also save a lot of effort in the muck out. (Much of your material handling then becomes sliding blocks out of a shelf space and onto a cart rather than trying to shovel it up if you plan your cutting plan right.)

    Cody, when going into a recently blasted area, check that it is safe and prevent rockfall. Just take a long metal stick and from the safe zone poke the ceiling quite violently. Better than any loose rock hittong your head.
    And a little tip for blasting: You have acces to ammonium nitrate, I am pretty sure about this. Just take Anfo if legal.
    And for bringing in pulver into a borehole, take a little capsule with the explosive and ignitor and push it in (wih air if sensitive explosive is used). Then take something like building foam to tighten the hole up

    Pretty sure that's a Ford model A four cylinder. You should be able to get absolutely anything you need for it new or used. Should be stampings or casting marks on it somewhere. Fair chance that hose is still good, but you REALLY don't want to chance it. And as Tanzer below me said, get those tools, and your compressor serviced. You don't need to ruin them or have stuff explode.

    • @heliarche
      @heliarche 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Also, get that air tank hydrostatically tested. Few people actually bleed them when they're supposed to and that thing is old. Bet there's lots of water and oil and rust in the bottom. Be safe Buddy!

    • @TheMetalButcher

    would useing a plasma touch to cut though the rocks be a good idea?

    • @theCodyReeder
      @theCodyReeder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that could work if you could make them conductive of eletrisity.

    • @hiyabuu
      @hiyabuu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i dont think it would be a bad idea to use a plasma cutter to make a dent in the mine but i think it would take some practice before you want to completely replace explosives with it. dont take this as fact but i heard that if you change the design of the top of your mine it would allow air to flow naturally into it. every foot or push the roof up or down and as theair begins to heat and cool it would naturally vent itself out.

    • @hiyabuu
      @hiyabuu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cody'sLab correctly if im wrong but i believe its impossible to make plasma without adding electricity? solid- liquid- and gas can all undergo a physical change in nature by adding heat - electricity - or vibration but i believe for a gas to undergo the phtsical change to plasma requires electricity to be passing between atoms? unless you meant making the rock conductive?

    • @19RedRhino89
      @19RedRhino89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Cody'sLab is that the same as electricity? Either way I don't think these people are understanding how a plasma cutter works.

    • @hiyabuu
      @hiyabuu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Fly Since ive never owned or used a plasma cutter, i may misunderstand it but plasma is not the same as electricity and i have done my research on that. I believe strongly in the plasma/electric universe and ive spent many hours on the topic.

    Hey Cody, a good idea to help get the smoke/dust out faster would be to makeshift something to connect your air mattress pump you brought over and connect it to your air ventilation tube and the air moving towards the far end would in a sense bounce off and push the smoke outwards. Obviously there could be a more efficient processes like hooking up a leaf blower or something of that sort, you should give it a try!

    Looking forward to the drilling now. I'm sure a 4 or 5 HP contractor compressor would run that hammer drill. At some point the compressor will reach equilibrium with the air consumption of the hammer drill and that's the pressure it will run at.

    Looks like your mining efforts could be about ready to take off! That compressor could do a lot of work for you if you can get it in good order again.
    Something about digging and mining always struck my fancy when I was a child; I would have killed to have mines on the property like that. Really enjoying the series!

    I just started watching your videos, awesome work. Suggestion on your blasting technique though, the ANFO you're making is much more than sufficient including minimal critical diameter to propagate your explosion. What you're lacking is proper stemming of your bore hole, add a stemming plug. They're cheap plastic flower looking like parts, you can end up using 1/4 of your current powder for much better pressure build-up. If you have any questions shoot me a PM and I can suggest many other items to make that easier on you.
