    Hey! The magpie's back!
    Feed him a few sunflower seeds when he stops by and he'll be eating out of your hand in no time! I'm starting to see the emerald hummingbirds here. Had a breeding pair build a nest in a hanging basket of Asparagus Ferns in 2015. Eggs were about 3/8" pale blue. When they hatched they were the size of a carpenter bee.

    The short punch does the job well. To improve the process a little, I think if you forge a new punch the body could be oval instead of round and the guide could be squashed a bit to fit it. That would keep the punch aligned with the work. As always, I'm impressed with your work but personally I don't have as good accuracy with the dogs head type hammers as I find them unbalanced, but that's probably down to my striking. Thanks Glen.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your oval idea is very interesting. I may just do that. For me, it's the opposite - I feel I have more control with this type of hammer though I personally prefer the hammer to be shorter than this. I think it really all comes down to what you're used to, nothing more. So with any new hammer, there's always a "feeling out" period. Thanks.

    I personally very much doubt medium carbon steel ( like 1045) is the best option if you want to hotpunch thicker steel and maintain a hard tool for longer periods. The 1045 punch will temper back to soft after a few heats. I am sure its fine for coldworking tools. You used H13 and D2 previously....any reason other than more expensive why you want to go to 1045 steel ???

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your sentiment regarding medium carbon vs. air hardening steels. But I've had excellent success with 1045 / 1050 for this sort of operation where the punch doesn't need to taper too finely on the business end. And I've found that properly heat treated medium carbon has a higher degree of toughness and resists mushrooming better on the striking end. But my sample size has been small and so we'll see... Thanks.

    • @HoutmeyersP
      @HoutmeyersP 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gstongs What i meant to say was that medium carbon is good enough to punch a small hole in thinner material(short time contact)....but it wont last very long if you use it on thick pieces of stock. I have made forge press patterning dies for damascus in medium carbon steel.....and even cooled them with water between cycles. The tips of the dies mushroomed after some use....wedging them in the billet i was making. Since than i make my patterning dies or hot cut tools in H11 or chipper steel ( 1.2360 )....once hardened they can withstand the double amount of temperature( about 550°c for 50 hrc) before they get back to unusable. I guess if you only make simple tools that can be maintained and hardened fast....medium carbon is the cheapest and best solution.

    • @gstongs

      I could have drilled more but at that point, with the stock hot, it isn't too hard to get the eye cleared out and formed. Thanks.

      soybean oil

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not all hex stock is medium carbon, some is mild steel. I used soybean oil, as Martin pointed out. The hex stock I use is 1045 and this really cannot attain high hardness no matter what the heat treat. But its best quality is a very high degree of toughness. Thanks.
