  • We dissect Howard Stern's descent from cultural icon to broken weirdo. What happened? What were the incentives? Who are the players? Is Howard even AWARE that he nuked his fan base & legacy? And is there any hope he wakes up to reality?

It's like he has no idea why people fell in love with his show, or maybe he does and just doesn't give a shit about ruining it.

Love this breakdown. I listen to old Howard clips all the time, Artie era was my favorite. I used to think Arties attempt shook Howard and was the real beginning point of the change. It just wasnt noticeable yet. Thanks for the entertainment.

Yep, both Christina & I agree that the Artie era was the best, esp post-Sirius.

I started listening to Stern in the early 90's. I listen to the show now on YT but I scroll past the new stuff and only listen to the old stuff. Sad what the show became.

I have gone to sleep EVERY night to CLASSIC Pelican for over a decade! I still find myself laughing hysterically. I refer to Stern in 2 eras. B.B- Before Beth (The Golden Ages) and A.B-After Beth (The Dark ages) Now they have things like......Cocktober. Great break down

Good breakdown and discussion. I would just personally map everything you're saying one decade earlier. Howard Stern's glory days were approximately 1990-2001; in other words, the Jackie Era. Jackie's departure is the beginning of the end for me, because that was the beginning of "cast members" becoming people who were already fans of the show, and were therefore less willing to be irreverent and self-effacing. There was now a built-in reverence for Howard, exactly the opposite of the classic Jackie era. It doesn't mean there hasn't been funny stuff post-Jackie; of course there has. But Jackie leaving fundamentally changed the tone and attitude of the show and its host.

Really good observation. I (Dan) have heard a lot of the old show but I lived in a city where it was taken off air so I am not *as* familiar with it as I am the early Sirius era. But that's a great point about fans becoming cast members. We saw that in later years with guys like Wolfie getting writing gigs.

He doesn’t acknowledge he is a grandfather, as he perceives it bad for his brand; the cool rock and roll guy with crazy hair. He wears a hair piece for the same reason.

He has admitted to the grandkids recently. His granddaughter calls him "Zoompa" because nearly their entire relationship has been over Zoom. Ashley had a son in the spring and Howard has actually seen that one.

I wonder if Howard knows he’s all over tik tok being canceled by liberal women for his old clips of Anna Nicole Smith?

I listened since the 90s, got Sirus as soon as he switched and have had it all these years, I got rid of my subscription this year.

I’m with you on loathing how they edited Artie out of the Gary pitch segment, but being upset about them removing JD’s wedding, is kind of stupid. Give the guy a break. He makes probably no money, and no one wants to re-live that type of failure. I mean, would you want your wedding aired, after being divorced from that person?

    • @HeebandGoy

Yeah, that's fair. Especially given how brutal she was. But I do think in the old days it would have at least come up.

When was the JD segment? Either it was completely uninteresting to me, or I missed it? I stopped listening after the Tom Brady interview in 2020, so maybe it was after that?

I wasn't suggesting that JD's wedding be aired. I was making a point that on the present day show, the past does not exist. One example of that is they don't mention JD's marriage or divorce, period. It's like it never happened. Can you imagine if Gary and Mary had divorced in the mid- to late- 90's? Howard would mention it every day.

@@toddmenard2330 JD had the girlfriend for awhile and it became many segments. JD's sheets, JD goes to the White House Correspondents Dinner, JD goes camping. The wedding coverage was a big deal because they wrote their own vows and JD called her a "beautiful creature" in an early draft. I think they split during the pandemic.

JD has had funny segments. His marriage I don’t even remember.
Da badass, bed sheets, him cancelling Ronnie’s car show, all gems.
Far as I’m concerned, they can never air anything about his marriage or that awful JDini skit ever again.

What would 90s Howie think about woke Howie? He'd be disgusted at what he's become. I left when Artie left as he was the show's last redeeming quality. Too much kissing stars asses & gay stuff.
