- On this weeks passage of 106 Nautic Miles, we set off from Baiona Spain heading south. Spending the night at Leixoes (Porto) before continuing to Aviero, spending most the time in a shroud of fire smoke and light rain of ash. On entering Aviero at night, we run aground. And so does a second boat.

love your blog style and raw sailing information, and all the itty bitty details of keeping that boat afloat, through thick and thin, pls don't change your format :)
@@stevetorrance8320 Thanks, Steve! For the comment and support 😁
Just remember you aren't the first to do this at night. I did it 60 years ago at Kent Island, MD. We were both lucky - no rocks on the bottom. It taught me the meaning of "local knowledge". Sail on!!
Made for an enjoyable evening experience. :)
I’ll never forget our small trip down the length of Windermere at night - ‘never again’ was uttered several times the next morning 😂. I can only imagine what it’s like attempting to come into sea harbours at night. Good to see the good, the bad and the ugly of sailing though. Another great video 👌
😅 to be fair, unknown waters at night are all equally unpleasant. Cheers
great work at the chart station, well done ,many can only rely on instruments that make you lazy. salute you.
A part of the fun of sailing is charting the course, figuring the tide and plotting the progress. Obviously on this one, we didn't get it perfect, but....o well. It was fun :)
What an eventful couple of days! Hope you two manage to get a bit of sleep after all that. Thanks for sharing with us
Our pleasure!
Great video. I think your lesson is ....Don't go into difficult harbours at night unless you absolutely have to ie being at sea is more dangerous. Passage planning should avoid wrong arrival times. Slow down at sea or speed up, as required. You jeopardise the safety of your boat by doing what you did. Lucky it was dead calm. I really like your style, your relationship dynamics, and humour.
Thanks Moonhand. Yes, you are correct, the normal thing to have done in the situation would be wait out at sea until dawn (and that would be the normal call). It became an 'encouragable' situation, with several sailboats having waited to enter the river at low water and upping anchor to head in. A lesson learned. There are several boats in the marina we are at right now that ended up on the same bank. :/
The advantage of a full keel is, you don't have to worry about breaking anything, that is as long you're not sitting on a rock😅
CCR never get's old! Cheers from 🇨🇭
@@waytogo2791 absolutely! We’ve had her intentionally dried out on mud and sand before, so a little bit of sand on the keel whilst we tip back and forth shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Just not the way we had planned for the night to go! Cheers ☺️
I love your adventures, even the ones that go a bit array. Orto it going. Love you guys.
☺️ I’m glad someone gets enjoyment out of our misadventures! 😅
I've seen a few go aground there! The trick is to do it in the dark otherwise pretend you are cleaning the bottom of the boat. Welcome to the exclusive club!! 😂
Do we have to validate our membership yearly or bi-weekly?
@@theincompetentcrew it's not required but bi-weekly you will have to join a different club!!
Thank you for sharing your adventures! I’m glad that this all happened at low tide, in calm conditions, and while you both were alert enough to deal with it. You might fiddle with your Navionics display to see if you can get it to offer relief shading for sounding depths and contours. Your subscription might not include it for that region, but I seem to recall that it’s something that can be enabled with a checkbox. I found this feature to be very handy in some of the tight spaces in the creeks of the Chesapeake Bay. Granted, you’re dealing with shifting sands on a river bar, so perhaps it would’ve been of no use here. I just know for me, it makes it way more intuitive to spot the channel at a glance, without having to study the contour lines. Nighttime definitely changes everything. I was amused by the coincidence of the name of the location “San Jacinto”. I recalled (from a deep dive into the history of Peter Gabriel’s song by that name) that San Jacinto is the patron saint of ‘those in danger of drowning’ (or in a hopeless situation). Anyway, I like your content and your vibe. Hopefully, that smoke lifts soon in the area, and you can give your boat (and yourselves) a good rinse.
Thanks for the comment and advice. Also, I had not noticed the relevance of San Jacinto. How ironic. :) The port spent the whole week we were there dredging the commercial river area so we suspect the problem may be less now (But also If we waited till dawn it never would have happened, gives a lot to think about after the fact).Entertaining for us though.
Cool video
Cheers!
this brings up the issue of life jackets always worn when on deck. there is super non bulky designs available you should get 6 for discount.
You’re not the first to be suckered by a light ashore! I once did a night entry into Villasimius (Sardinia) and unbeknown to me, the flashing red which was supposed to form one of the leading lights was off. It turned out that I’d made my entry on the one serviceable leading light, and a flashing Coca-Cola sign…. Lucky to get away with that one!
I guess it serves as a gentle lesson for us. Had we waited a few minutes the ferry would have led us in on the correct line. O well. Added a bit of interest to the evening.
20 years ago when I was in the Navy all you had to do to be sure what you had was a nav light and not a ship or land was wiggle your binoculars and see if it made a solid or dotted line.
With all the LED lights now I guess that is out the window. So it's characteristics only then, which may take minutes to figure out.
@@stefflus08 I’m not sure I understand. What does the wiggling do, and why would LED lights make the difference?
Non-satirical anchoring. Always the best way. Bill
@@WilliamBell-t8k Jury’s still out on whether satirical or non satirical anchoring is better. Poll should be in shortly 😉
save dollars for self furling genno and foresail. best thing since sliced bread.
We should have something in the pipeline by Xmas. A nice winter project.
that's just horrible, glad they apprehended the arsonist!
We are glad they apprehended him too. Apparently he was a repeat offender. Horrible situation all around.

Oi - what sort of courtesy flag is that? If you are passing Lagos let me know and there will be a new one waiting for you. Oh, and I like sleep 🙂
@@ChaseTheMoments yeah it’s definitely seen better days 🫣 I don’t know where the other half of it went. Somehow the wind and sand really managed to chew it up!
We will get a new one today. I ashamedly admit it was becoming disheveled. Just sewn up the red on the stern as well.
@@theincompetentcrew Its all that mile crunching you guys are doing in storms and fires 😜
